My first tri is going to be in June and honestly I have not even thought about transitions.  I guess my plan is to wear a trisuit and not drown during the swim.  Ha!

This will allow me to just put on socks, shoes, helmet, sunglasses and go.

A couple of thoughts here. I don't know if you've considered it at all, but some triathletes will not wear socks to save time. If you are blister prone that may not be a great idea, and definitely train that way before you try it in a race.  The rest sounds good. There are also more advanced ways of dealing with your shoes (leaving them attached on the bike), but they won't save you any time if you are either uncomfortable or if you cause yourself to fall. This takes a lot of extra practice.

Oh, and the not drowning part is important too. Congrats on a great week of training and a victory over your buddy. If he is going home to work harder, you need to do the same, right?

I bought some shoes to wear "sockless" but I have such sweaty feet that I am leaning toward wearing socks.  Darn my mother.  She has the sweaty feet gene and it came right to me and then right to one of my daughters.  We call it the smelly feet gene.

Can I wear my mp3 player during the bike and run phases.  I am listening to a really good book series and would like to be able to listen during the tri.  Is this okay?

If it is a USAT sanctioned race, and most of them are, you will not be able to listen to any audio devices while on the bike or run. As a side note, I run with music most of the time, but I choose to not ride with music. I want to be hyper-aware of the vehicles on the road, because most of the time they are not paying a bit of attention to me.

This is a USAT sanctioned race and I was hoping that you would not say that.  I have improved a little bit.  I quit watching movies while I rode my bike six months ago.  Now I listen to audio books. Looks like I need  to add a little practice without my ipod.  Sorry Charlie Castilio (W.E.B. Webber's Presidential agent series).

chrisbowers - 2012-02-27 9:35 AM Q&A Monday: Okay folks, let's see if we can get some questions today and spur some good conversation. How about we see if anyone has any questions about race execution?  I was thinking specifically about transitions/transition area, etc..., but if you have other questions let's discuss those too.

My question about transition areas is how much room do you typically get?  I understand races are going to be a little different, but is it just enough room to change and place your gear?  Also, do you use a beach towel on the ground to sit/stand on or is it really worth the money to buy a transition mat?

Swam 1 mile again today.  Also, my trainer for my bicycle came in today (birthday present from my wife- but she does not know it yet!).

I technically completed my first unofficial Triathalon today with very lax transition times and it was a little out of order.  I started out with a 20 mile bike ride, then went to a 3 mile run, then to a 2200yd swim.  I was surprised at how good I felt throughout the entire thing. The only thing that got tired were my arms on the swim??  I figured it was probably from the long, hard swim set I did yesterday morning.

Well in most cases your space is "very" limited. As far as changing, I am not sure what you are going to change into or out of.  Just remember there is actually a rule about no nudity in the TA. I would say that in all of the races I have done up to a Half Ironman there is only enough room to place your gear.  I have a transition mat, but only because someone bought it for me as a gift. I typically fold that in half, to make it about the size of a hand towel (which is what I used before I got a transition mat). I really use the towel as a sort of "place holder". I put my running shoes, hat & race number belt in the back and back when I put my bike shoes on before I mounted the bike I put those in front of the running shoes. That's really it. In my opinion, I would not go out and just buy a transition mat when a small hand towel does the trick just fine.

Awesome! I need to get technique lessons from you. I'm probably "at least" a couple of minutes slower than that.

Met a great group of people today on my first local group ride!  Lots of mental toughness training today with wind at 10 miles, felt like more, and gust up to 14.  Some of the guys were pretty good riders and let me ask lots of questions.  Technique is key and they gave me some great drills and a place to get on a computrainer for real time evaluation of my stroke.  We rode 26 miles in just under 2 hours.

What a difference riding in a group makes...I would have quit or not pushed as hard with the wind blowing like it was if I had been by myself.  Can't wait for our next ride!

Thanks Chris...no local shops here.  I have occasionally met with the group where I purchased my bike but they meet on Saturdays which would be the 6th day of the week driving 140 miles.  Grateful to have this local group that is starting up.  During the longer daylight season they will even ride at 5 am during the week which is great because I can ride with them for an hour before having to head to work.

Cynthia, most of your local bike shops and if you happen to have any local tri shops will put on a weekly (some more frequently than weekly) ride in the spring, summer and fall and if your lucky enough to live in a year round outdoor cycling climate they do it in the winter too. They are a great way to learn how to ride in a group.  Things like etiquette, pace lines, etc.... And there are always those out there that are willing to help others.

5am swim was cancelled due to rain and high winds but the 9:30 session was still on.  Soooo cold out there even at 9:30 and the pool heater couldn't keep up with the weather so it was much colder than normal.  However, I swam 4400yds in a little over an hour so maybe the cold water has something to do with it!  The best part was that I wasn't even tired at the end, just getting a little cold.

On day 3 of a two week crazy time at work. Nearly impossible to keep my fitness up. I am doing a run or weight lifting every day but not able to bike or swim. I just hope I don't lose too much over two weeks. At some point it will get worse as I work 14 hours per day on concrete. Those days may not allow for any workout. I don't like it but it is what allows me to train the rest of the year (except for another week in Oct.). I hate when work gets in the way of my fun!!

Had to get a some fasting lab test done this morning on base.  Medical doesn't open until 0730 so I was able to hit the pool prior to going in for the lab work.  Gosh I really wish I worked closer to home.  It was great to have the time to swim.  However, my blood sugar was low so I kept running out  of breath quickly.

The other day I watched the TI videos and made a lot of changes this morning.  I felt the glide like never before and though I was not any faster there was a huge difference in my stroke!  Can't wait to try it again this weekend when I have some fuel in me!

Got in a 25 mile easy ride today and followed up with a 1350 yard swim.  Still so friggin' slow!  Tomorrow is an hour long run on the treadmill.

Ran the Little Rock Marathon yesterday. Finished in 4:31, way slower than I'd hoped. Course was hilly, 30 degree temp change from start to finish, most of my training was on a treadmill because of travel, words, words, words. BUT I FINISHED!

I had a good weekend of working out.  On Saturday, I did some weight training and got an hour in on the new trainer (which I really like).  I do not know how my wife knew exactly what I wanted (insert sarcasm here)!  On Sunday, I got in a 26 mile bike ride.  I thought I held up well, but then just became really tired by late afternoon.

Swim and run today.
