We used to bike and run many years ago, before she was ever coached. It's been wonderful to watch how much she has improved over the years! Hope everyone is having a great New Year's Day. I have a rest day today and a short run tomorrow. Goal for tomorrow is to start core work. I'm only supposed to do core work 2X a week for approximately 20 minutes, but I continue to avoid doing it. |

Member 413 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED kaburns1214 - 2013-01-01 2:05 PM Oh yes. well I am pretty into it as you can see! I tore my hamstring at the tendon insertion point in 2009 and I honestly don't think I could do triathlon without "fixing" that hamstring with yoga. I do a lot of bikram which is the super hot kind so this is good for heat training. I feel so relaxed in that hot room (I know this is not for everyone!!!...the other day the thermometer in the room registered 114 degrees). Then I do power vinyasa which is great for back and core strength. The clincher, though, is that data suggests that too much flexibility can take away muscular strength. Sooooo...at the end of the day it may be that I am doing too much yoga for optimal triathlon training (I obviously should be putting some of this time into the bike!!)... but I just like it. Of note, I did pretty much give up yoga (definitely bikram) in the last 3 to 4 months of IM training because of course I just didn't have time but I wish I had done a little bit (may have helped the tendonitis I had to deal with). For now my plan is to hope to NOT give it up with HIM training. kr140.6 - 2013-01-01 11:06 AM Happy New Year! And I have only had these for about 5 months. Dryer sheets really haven't helpedI feel offended people gave me a hard time about only cleaning hockey equipment 1x per year ... Extreme Veteran 418 Texas | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED First day of Whole100 - 2 c. coffee w/coconut milk, eggs and spinach in coconut oil; homemade dried fruit/nut bar; organic ground beef and sugar snap peas; fresh sockeye salmon, roasted butternut squash, fresh green beans. Been busy with teaching my fitness classes and getting some of my students on board with the Whole30 program. Had class this morning and a nutrition class. I've got to start getting in some training. It has been very cold for Texas and rainy. Not too good for bike riding especially on a new bike I'm not too familar with. I have a treadmill at our studio, but I despise treadmill running. Think I'll finally get outside on Thursday with my running partner. Got to get back up to speed for the Hot Chocolate 15k in February. Need to get on the bike so I can do the Freeze Your Fanny bike ride in February, too. I don't have a trainer. Maybe I should consider buying one. That sounds boring, too. Don't know much about them though. Now that the holidays are over, I will also go back to the recreation center that has the indoor pool to start swimming again, hopefully Friday. Don't care for pool swimming, but this one is very nice and it's saline. Edited by luv2bhealthy 2013-01-01 10:31 PM |

Extreme Veteran 418 Texas | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED karen26.2 - 2013-01-01 8:42 AM So what is everyone doing Whole 30 having for breakfast today? I just woke up (still sick as a dog - ARRR!) and am drinking black coffee. The coconut milk I bought says once opened it must be consumed in 2 days. There's no way I can finish off that much so I didn't open it. I stopped using creamer in my coffee a couple months ago, and had really only been adding a small amount of unsweetened almond milk, so drinking coffee black today is not much different. If I can gather the strength to cook I'm going to saute some collards, mushrooms, onions and eggs. How about everyone else? You should be able to refrigerate your coconut milk so it lasts longer. That's what I do with mine (actually says to do so on the can) and it's been fine. Hope you feel better soon! |

Also I registered yesterday for the US Masters / American Swimming Coaching Association Level 1 and 2 coaching clinic in March in NYC. There's a entire "chapter" on triathlon swimming, which should be interesting. |

Don't care for pool swimming, but this one is very nice and it's saline. They're a complete necessity in cold climates. Trainers are essentially stable fly wheels that place resistance on the back wheel of the bike. Different trainers use different methods to create resistance (e.g. magnets, wind and fluid). Outside of a compu trainer, fluid trainers give the most accurate road feel. Trainers aren't just good for cold weather, they also provide an incredibly efficient way to train. You can control variables much better on a trainer and I lots of people who will use a trainer year round for interval work. After my bike crash in July, I did 80-90% of my biking on the trainer. |

Kind of my bread and butter. I LUV interval work. I keep hearing low cadence intervals. I assume that means a ton of gear/resistance????Low cadence intervals are generally big ring, small cog (about 55-60 rpm). The purpose of these intervals is to provide bike specific strength training. They can also simulate hills indoors. You can do them aerobically or anaerobically depending on the goal. I find them to be one of the most effective ways to build bike strength -- they're much more sport specific and effective than gym lifting. Edited by kaburns1214 2013-01-02 7:00 AM |
