Good idea but do you really want a five year old Fondriest? Bright yellow hammerite (ultimate theft deterent) and clip on aero bars that tilt forwards if you are even slightly out of balance (i.e. whilst cycling)?

What do you currently ride? In fact, what kind of gear do you all have?

I have (or will have this afternoon) a Trek Equinox 7, Ironman shorts, Brookes Blue running shoes and a polar heart rate monitor + the obligatory Speedos with a variety of un-named goggles and other stuff I just have lying around from more active days.

Interested to know what's in everyone elses closet and to see if anyone has any indispensible kit that someone else may find useful.

Mark--I do think being a lawyer is cool! Considered being one myself, but I am an empath, so I decided to be a healer instead. If we were still a hunter/gatherer/tribal society, Prof would be the Chief, you would be the Peacekeeper, and I would be a shaman/midwife! Malph would be one of the hunter/warriors. Watergirl would also be a shaman, as would Jose. Jen would be an apprentice. BGT would be an earth mother and when pregnant, the whole tribe would protect her. Rob would be a messenger, running correspondence from tribe to tribe. I don't know what Helen, Kanders, Mike and Sean do for a living, so I can't comment on them at this time

Equipment, equipment....I'm bringing home my new Trek E5 this week, no matter what!!! Of course, my office mortgage is due this week, too. So, I'll be trying the homemade bar recipe from Mark, but I'm adding coconut to it! And I always drink my coffee cold, so that's perfect! I think listing equipment is a good exercise in GRATITUDE! It's okay to realize just how much we have and not focus on how much more we want.

Rob--I'm with you! I love mountain bikes! Actually had a sweet purple Canondale Tandem mountain bike when married. It was so hot! But, it had to be sold for dental bills, and it is pretty hard to ride a tandem solo....I do have a specialized mountain bike that I got used at the Sparta bike shop. Sparta is 20 miles from me and has this famous bike trail--the rails to trails thing, and touts itself as the "bike capitol of the world". Whatever. It works, but isn't fancy.

Malph--I'm holding you to the promise of reporting on the evolution run! Nerd girl here wants to know!

Watergirl--I'm starting now to USE the heart rate monitor I bought quite awhile ago. Didn't even want to know how deconditioned I was at first. I still don't really want to face it, but there it is! Can't do more than improve from here! I do sometimes wonder if I damaged my heart when I had that anorexic thing. I was so weak that I tried to take this Tai Kwan Do class and couldn't muster much of a kick or a punch. It was pitiful! I'm like totally buff now in comparison, despite Carlos' analysis of my weak upper body tone. I think it's partly just that my thighs are huge and make my upper body look funny. Okay, maybe they aren't huge, but to me they are....

Keep up the fantastic work everyone!! I'll keep you posted on the GPS project! Tech weenie here needs all the help she can get. The rest of you can probably just make it on raw talent alone!!!

Phoenix

I couldn't agree with you more. I am appreciating very much what I have got and I am putting a picture of it below....

Warning. Bike porn!

http://www.trekbike.co.uk/2007/bikes.php?sec=overview&MainCatID=1&S...

Rides like a dream. I still look like a circus clown on it though but time is on my side to do something about that!

Would it be wrong to take it to bed tonight? It would get awfully cold in the garage by itself, poor thing.

Wow its been a busy morning for everyone and I just woke up! This daylight savings thing is throwing me off! I also worked late last night so I feel justified in sleeping in. Anyway, I forgot to post my weekly totals on saturday so here they are:

Swim: 2.47 miles (4350 yds)
Bike: 39 miles
I used this website to convert the yards to miles and since we have all you metric system people out there, you might find it handy: http://www.easysurf.cc/cnver7.htm
I have nothing to offer for running since I took the week off! Im not sure if Im ready to run again, the hamstring still is bothering me a bit so I might try pool running today. Which is about as fun as treadmill running but even worse cuz you cant listen to music. But I might do it. Or, maybe i will just do 1/2-1mile run and see how it feels. That sounds waayyy better to me.

Thanks for thinking of all of us Phoenix! that is so cool, if they give a bunch of those to try out I will be amazed! I would really like that though because I will be swimming in the lake in a few months and never know how long I go, just estimate based on time. Hows the Heart Rate Monitor working for you? Its a great tool, I promise.

Congrats on the new bikes Mark and Phoenix! I love new equipment. I am almost embarrassed to list all the stuff I have, I think part of me does triathlons just as an excuse to fuel my shopping addiction. Actually, I have slowed down recently in purchasing, ever since my wedding which of course sucked up enough money for a lifetime! However, I did just buy a new pair of aerobars on recommendation of my physical therapist so I do have a relatively new pair of aerobars that Im not using now up for sale or trade. I bought them about 2 years ago, the only thing they need are a pair of new arm pads. This is this years version of the same set: http://www.profile-design.com/2006_product_pages/aerobars/splitseco... - MIne have silver bars instead of black but the rest of it is black.
Anyone interested? Make me an offer! (im easy by the way...I mean, not that kind of easy, but nicer than I should be kind of easy!)
If you dont have aerobars and are thinking of getting some, my only piece of advice that I learned the hard way is that if you are riding in aero position, you have to totally adjust the dimensions of your seat and handlebars to fit right or you will end up with pain in places you shouldnt.

So, I now have a Cervelo Soloist bike with Carbon Strike Aerobars. Love the Cervelo, it rides so smooth. I wear Mizuno Nirvana running shoes and carry an ipod mini. Sometimes wear my Timex Heart Rate monitor if I remember. I am a swimsuit freak (have more than I can count) and I really like the Speedo goggles that are about 14$ (I cant remmeber the name). I have 3 pairs. My favorite line of workout clothing is Lululemon Athletica but its so darn expenive I only have a few things. Those are just the major things-I wont even mention the litttle stuff.
Ok, off to the gym, I guess its time to get moving!

Oh poop! The American dude was not nearly as nice as the Taiwanese dude! He said we can't have free samples unless we are editors of a publication that would write about them. Anyone in publishing?? BUT, he said we could get a nice group discount when the darn things come out for distribution in the states in no less than 60 days. Hmmmm, NOT what the other guy promised!! I'm moving to Taiwan D#*n American capitalists!

Mark--you have a NICE baby there! Mine is just like it but light blue and an E5 instead of an E7. What the difference is, I'm not sure, 'cept yours is probably better and more expensive. (because we all know that more expensive = better) I'll sleep with mine, too. She's not going outside on the road until the mud clears!

Of course, Watergirl has a Cervelo! Can't compete there, girl! What's the pic of? A recent race? Come on, brag a little.

I might actually be interested in those, Watergirl. Why are you switching, if I may ask? I was going to hold off on aerobars for a year (just got my road bike a month ago), but if the right deal comes across I have a hard time resisting.

Gear for me:
Cannondale R800 (last year's model) Nice bike, and I picked up the trainer from mom and dad last weekend so I can resume using it indoors (although so much snow has melted I may be outdoors soon - cross your fingers and toes). And it's silver, like the streak in my hair.
NB 845s (need replacing - it's been a year)
Swimsuit: Black Nike which has lasted a reeeeally long time. I keep waiting for it to wear out. And I actually do use it, too!
I also bought a 1 piece Danskin trisuit that I got a ridiculous deal on at Sierratradingpost last winter, but now I'm thinking I may need to wear 2 pieces. So there you go.
I love my iPod nano, and I have a Polar HRM that I got for Christmas last year; it's been a real training help.

Heh guys

- this winter purchased bike shoes/clips- previously used the cages. Have been training with them indoors (just too darn cold here to venture out... ) am rather nervous about getting outside and killing myself I have accepted the fact that yup i will tip over and fall- at least once (ha ha)- but nervous just the same. And as well concerned about transitons- switiching shoes, etc- I'm not the fastest anyway- so just one more thing to do!!

My fav suits are good ole speedo bathing suits- I try and pic them on on sale whenever possible. Have a 2 pice tri suit- have not worn yet- maybe this will be the season. For bike- purchased an Oryx 210 about 4 yrs ago- would love to upgrade (yup Cervelo just rolls off my lips!!) however with 2 kids still in college/university- would have to work lots of over time to even think about it. However- still dreaming!! I started doing tri's on my husbands mountain bike (oh- - I guess its technically mine- I bought it for him- he road it once- he' rather be driving around in his pick-up truck!!) - but anyway- managed ok with the mountain bike for my first yr- so Robb- you'll do fine!!
- just picked up a new pair of NewBalance 1222- need to break them in. Thought with the diatance training needed some serious shoes- had a pair last yr and loved them!!
-and regarding the training-ugh!!! not sure if I can do the marathon!!! Don't feel have done enoughruns throught the week, nor long enough long runs. Still carrying thoses 15 extra lbs I thought would be off by now!!! I guess their would not be shame switching to a 1/2, however... My daugher and I signed up for this race last yr- however had some serious un-expected surgery that rather changed all last yrs training plans. Feel great this yr- just not alot of confidence. We'll see.

- and Phoen- I'm a goold ole Reg N!!!
-take care guys- enjoys reading everyones postings

Okay Helen, here's your pep talk! I've not done a marathon yet, and can barely manage 2miles currently. BUT--I've actually met/dated/flirted with quite a few marathon dudes and they all say the same thing. They do them because of how FANTASTIC you feel afterwards! A euphoria and sense of satisfaction like nothing else! THAT'S the reward. There's no other reason to do one. The one fellow has been doing marathons for only about 2 years and has done 9 now in that time, including Antarctica. And when I met some of these guys, they weren't exactly petite. Meaning, they were carrying around at least 15 extra pounds. I was rather surprised by this, but I think if you have a little extra weight, you survive the distance much better--makes sense, huh? The ironman is totally lean, but he's more of a tri guy. The sprinters are leaner, it seems. Which also makes sense to me--they are faster that way. So, RELAX! Enjoy the ride! Focus on the reward--which MUST be better than sex! Because some of the men actually got left by their wives over their training. Seems a silly thing to leave someone for, but I'm way more independent than most women. And NONE of them do more than one or two 20 mile runs in preparation for the marathon. Most do like 8-9 mile runs on a regular basis. The one fellow I dated the longest did them because his cholesterol is genetically super high--his mom had 2 heart attacks and 5 bypasses. So, he runs to live, literally, and is completely vegetarian. He does a marathon in about 5 hours and is totally happy with that. Pat did the ironman in 12 hours and there is a 17 hour cutoff. So, he wasn't running that terribly fast, but he finished and was very happy with that. There was a 70 year old who did an ironman in 17:01 and they gave him the minute so he could qualify as a finisher and then threw a party for him! And I asked Pat what in the world a woman ironman LOOKS like, and he said they just look like normal women. I pictured twiggy like women, or scary bodybuilding looking women or extremely butchy types, but he says not. He even said he thought I could be an ironman within 2 years. Well......maybe a half

Well back from my late night gym visit. Love the 24hr gym! about 40 treadmills all to myself!

Lets see, equipment list

Bike: 2007 Gary Fisher Advance. Solid entry level mountain bike. Got it a couple months ago and its my first bike since I was 7 years old :D

http://www.bikepedlar.co.uk/acatalog/AdvanceWhite.jpg

Shoes. Nike Air edge. Lighter than my actual running shoe, and made out of the dry fit material

No triathlon get up yet. I think I am just going to go in some shorts and a t-shirt. Also don't plan to run bike shoes/clipless petals, in hopes to gain a min in the transition.

I am very happy with my bike as well as my shoes. I would like to maybe pick up a cheap road bike in the future, but probably not this year. I like to play with carbon fiber (I make the odd part for my cars) and have been thinking of making my own carbon fiber bike frame. Maybe a winter project.

Mark, that is a sexy sexy bike. Yours better be in white too!

Pene, you and your athletic men! You are making all the boys on here jealous :P Too bad about the pedometers, maybe we can say this forum is where we will publish the results haha.

here's my first week of keeping track totals.
Bike: 43 miles
Run: 4.5 miles
Swim: 630m

this week I would like to run/bike about 10-20% more than I did last week.

hey guys hows it going? has been a big day of exercise to me and just quietly im now rooted!

started off with a 10km ride 32 mins then did a run straight after 4kms 22 mins very slow times and i had to walk a bit but im not overly dissapointed as its the first brick training session i have done and these are the 2 distances for my first tri coming up. only difference is the 1 im doing is a offroad tri so my times will be slower again,, to top it all off i went and did a gym session working on my legs biceps back and abs. so now i will sit here and try not to move!

anyway Eveloution of running dvd is a good dvd which trains you how to be more effiecent in your running it shows you where you lose your power in running for example a major problem is peoples stride length is too long and to shorten it this will save energy from impact other things to reduce energy is to run and land more so on the balls of your feet a lot of people land on there heels... there is other parts which i cant remember now. there is also about 5 training drills on how to achieve these things and they recomend you buy a metronome to count your steps per minute they say 182 is a good amount.

overall a good dvd if you can buy it fairly cheap and want to improve your running then i will recomend it.

cheers

Robb--jealous? Why? Are you crunching on me? (terminology from the movie "never been kissed" with Drew Barrymore) Pretty safe to crunch on an old woman with three kids who lives in a totally different country Just be careful, cause I flirt vehemently! It's a gift! Thank you again for the fitday recommendation. I love it--it gives the calories for different activities, too. And there are sections for moods, bad influences while dieting, etc. Pretty cool find! Now I'll be able to lose those last pounds, which everyone says are the hardest. It's just math--more energy has to go out than goes in! What is it with white bikes, btw?

Sean--I ordered the rollers and two videos to use with them--one for a stretching workout and one for Pilates on rollers. Yep, I'm sore. Yesterday was torture to do 2 little miles on the treadmill. I'm also having a little relapse with the sinus/upper respiratory thing. But, when you do races, the adrenals output what they can and then your immunity can go down. So, thank you for the advice--next time I will have the rollers and just automatically use them afterwards. But here's a Q--how soon after an event or hard workout should you do the myofascial routine? Is there a rule of thumb about that? AND TELL US HOW YOUR ADVENTURE RACE WENT!

BGT--your 8K is going to be great! Each increase in distance is going to feel like a marathon psychologically. You are very fiesty and full of fire--learn to reach in there and find all that fire and push it out through your body! And who cares if you need to slow down and take a breather or two (or more). No different than when you do intervals to increase speed. Of course you need to slow down when you are running faster or longer or both. Just keep pushing yourself and you'll get through it. I'm telling myself the faster I learn to go, the less time I need to be out there torturing myself! Haven't found the joy in the run yet--it just feels like work! I'm proud of you like you can't imagine! You of all the folks on here are my best inspiration, because I sense you've been through a lot that you don't talk about!! JUST DO IT Myself, I'm having trouble even joining the running club in LaCrosse, because I still don't see myself as a runner and wonder if I'll EVER be able to pull off that half marathon in September. But, I think I will join after all. I'll be good for them. Give 'em all something to smile about--nerd girl turned runner with WAY more ambition than talent I sometimes think I'm growing balls.......hey, if I totally suck at all this, I can always be the first comedienne to do a "my experiences as a sucky triathlete" routine because I can sure laugh at myself!!

Hi

The weather has finally broken here and I cycled in this morning on a brand new, gleaming white bike in beautiful spring sunshine. Life is good at moments like that.

Then I got into the office. Ho hum.

Anyhow, enjoyed the posts over the last day or so. Never mind about the free gear. If at first you don't succeed etc.

BGT: Good luck with your race this weekend. Remember, you’re only running the race you want to run. I always think that the best athletes are the ones that are still smiling regardless.

I enjoyed the Rumi so much I thought that I would pass back two poems today. The first is for us all when we are competing/training or just struggling to juggle competing demands:

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

By a chap called Rudyard Kipling.

The second is based on Shakespeare’s soliloquy in Act II, Scene 7 in As you Like It by the melancholy Jacques. Comparing life to a play, it goes on to catalogue the seven ages of man's life. The soliloquy goes on for far too long so here is a summary!

Seven ages: first puking and mewling,
Then very pissed off with one's schooling,
Then flirts, and then fights,
Then judging chaps' rights,
Then sitting in slippers, then drooling.

Whilst doing these I thought of a motivational slogan for a wrist band:

“Don’t look here, look where you’re running”

If you want some truly motivating slogans…

http://www.despair.com/viewall.html

Sorry about the length etc

Ahhh, poetry....I once (almost) fell prey to a Nigerian scammer on Match.com who sent me poetry! Well, it was pretty bad, but original There are scammers all over the place now, playing with people's desire to be loved. Pretty sad! After awhile you figure it out and then it's fun to play with their heads, but ya do have to be careful--viruses, identity theft, etc.

No, seriously--excellent stuff, Mark! And don't worry about long posts. I sure don't!

Malph/Clint--thanks for the evolution running info! Gonna add a metronome to my list. Was going to get my little girl into piano lessons anyway.....that way the thing is a write-off. Anything you buy that prevents disease (lard redbike, couch potato syndrome) is a legitimate health expense. Don't know about the other countries and taxes, though.....

My tri club finally emailed me, welcoming me to the group. I had sent in my membership fee quite awhile ago. Anyway, the gal said there's a mini tri in LaCrosse this weekend just for fun and pizza. So, I hope it won't interfere with the spinathon on Sunday. I need all the practice (and pizza) I can get!

I am sure it is a sign of being staggeringly bored at work but I have just entered the Skipton triathlon on the 29th April! That is 47 days away and counting!

It is a swim of 400m, bike 20km and run 5km. In my current state I do not belive that I will be troubling the prize givers overly!

I need some work to do otherwise I will just enter races all day and stare out of the window!

WEEKLY TOTALS:

As of yesterday, here are the numbers:

S 28,888 yards
B 832.84 miles
R 157.06 miles

Wow! Anyone else stunned by those distances?

Now let's talk about all these posts. Either you all have seriously gotten caught up in a triathlon-related fever, or no one feels like working and we're all secretly posting instead of attacking the piles of work on our desks. Can you tell which group I'm in?

I like the equipment lists. Mine consists of Asics shoes, a Felt bike, Shimano bike shoes, DeSoto tri shorts, an assortment of high tech fiber and thread-worn shirts, Speedos (long and short), too many goggles to count (including the $25 Barracudas I just hate), a cupboard of gels/bars/powders, a Timex HRM, wetsuit, helmets, sunglasses, drink bottles, Bento box, extra tubes...sheesh, this is more stuff than I thought I had. Hmm, no one show this list to the Mrs., ok?

It was really nice here, weather-wise, so I braved my first spring outdoor run! Had to take the family along, so I reasoned that it would be best to try the elementary track so they could play on the playground rather than following along behind on the road. Nice concept, except the track was 90% covered by snow up to my midcalf. I tried it anyway. Didn't get too far and the REALLY cold wet feet crunching through the snow just got to me. Undaunted, I decided to run in the elementary parking lot, which was cleared of snow. I could still see the kids from there most of the way. The cold wet slosh-sloshing from my super soaked shoes aside, it wasn't too bad! I tried the shorter steps (minus the metronome) and wore the pedometer. Then it occured to me than perhaps shorter steps would equal a different number of them to equal a mile? Tried to put this burning question aside and just enjoy weirding the folks walking with their kids there out. (One woman actually took one look at me and whispered to her son to hurry up when I got close to them) Well, this worked well until my littlest son kept getting stuck in the snow and yelling for me to help him. I negotiated and bribed, but he's 4, so that didn't get me far. I had to stop at 5408 steps in 35 minutes, which is not bad considering how many times I took a break and walked a bit. Herded them all back home, fed them and treated myself to anchovies. All I can say about anchovies is now I can check THAT off my list Then the scientist in me could stand it no longer, so I changed into my dry cheapo walmart running shoes and got on the treadmill with the pedometer on to see JUST how many little evolution steps equal a mile. It's 2030. So, my grand total for the night is 3.66 miles, with an anchovy break in between.

The whole thing that got me outside running fever is this--the tri group here considers a MINI tri 1.5 HOURS in the pool, followed by a 1 hour group cycling session (which is rigorous, I'm telling you!) and a FIVE MILE outdoor run. Yikes! Hate to think what they consider a MAXI tri!! There are a bunch of ironmen and ironwomen in that group and some of them did the Antarctica marathon the end of February. NOT a bunch of lightweights. Geesh.

One of my patients, who is a nurse, brought me some yoga magazine poses and there are several of them that look to me to be PERFECT for the swim. Don't have my endurance yoga DVD yet, but I'm going to try these tonight after the rugrats finally go to sleep. Noah is bouncing on the bed and hitting Mose with a pillow as I write and Micah is pretending to read a book (she's in Kindergarten). Typical night at the Phoenix residence

I might actually be interested in those, Watergirl. Why are you switching, if I may ask? I was going to hold off on aerobars for a year (just got my road bike a month ago), but if the right deal comes across I have a hard time resisting.

Im switching because my physical therapist told me too. Seriously, he said the ones I had just couldnt quite be adjusted the way I needed them to be so that my bike fit was optimum and so I might as well as get the ones that will work better for me. It had to do with the angles of the arm pads but I honestly cant tell much of a difference but I guess I have carbon fiber ones now so that might be good. Although, I swear they weigh the same too. Anyway, if you are interested, let me know. Ill give you my personal email and we can discuss! I think the price might be right for you

Just so you guys know, I realize I am VERY LUCKY to have my Cervelo. I wouldnt have it except my super ironman brother-in-law decided to sell his and I was the lucky recipient of a good deal. I would have never bought that bike otherwise, although they arent as pricey as they look. I had been perfectly happy on my Specialized Allez Sport road bike. It is fun seeing everyone's equipment list and its nice to get reviews from other people on stuff they have used. I do need to buy some new bike shoes, if anyone has any recommendations. I use the clipless-pedals which I think helps immensely. Whoever said they were scared about using them out on the road, dont be. I mean, if you are practicing inside on a trainer thats more than most people practice. I, of course, fell the first day using them (and many days since) but the good thing is that its only when you stop that its an issue so you are never going very fast so as long as you protect your head the most you get are a few scratches. I was petrified of them for a long time and refused to use them for a long time. Now, I couldnt race without them.

I posted my picture of me at the finish line of the Nike half-marathon last year- it was a moment I never thought would happen in this chubby girl's life, so I figured it could give y'all some inspiration for your races to come. Unfortunately, this website requires such a small pixel size you cant see a thing in the picture! Anyway, BGT- I want to see a picture of you just like that, hands in the air as the winner, after your 8K this weekeend. I know you can do it!

Keep up the running Phoenix and you just might like it eventually. Becoming a "runner" albeit a slow one was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I swear it was harder than going to grad school. It took almost a year before it felt good and two years before I felt weird if I hadnt run in a few days.
Alright, enuff for today. I didnt workout today and Im Ok with it

Watergirl--thanks for the pep talk about clip on shoes and running! Congrats on a half marathon!! Can you tell us how long it took to work up to 13 miles? I have a half the end of September and am realizing just how hard that will be! How many miles are a new pair of shoes good for?

I'm taking a rest day today. I'm tired and my attitude is bad. Imagine that--Miss Merry Sunshine who bites off more than she can chew is having a low day!!

On the positive side, the Universe blessed me today with a busy day--I had 11 patients from two different Amish settlements in Iowa (3 hours away) and 4 of them new patients (exam fees) plus all the regulars. The nice thing about that is they are cash at the time of service, no insurance hassles. So, I made my office mortgage AND enough for my bike today! THANK YOU UNIVERSE!!! And, one lady brought me homemade glazed donuts Only ate one and let my kids at the rest. I'm being really good and posting all my food on the fitday program.

The yoga is hard. Makes me feel decrepit. Sort of like the tin woodsman in need of oil! I'll keep at it, but all my postive ambition is missing today. Must have taken the day off, too....

I think I need a day off training myself. Its our first bout of nice weather though and I am trying to get as much as I can of it before it gets cold again. Oh well I will rest when I die :P

Heres my tip for the day, taken from this month's Men's Health

FASTER START, FASTER FINISH

In your next road race, go out quickly at the start and you'll beat the guys who save energy for a late kick. The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research published a study of 11 collegiate distance running who ran three 5-K trails at different paces in the first mile: their average mile page, 3 percent faster than average, or 6 percent faster. The fastest early pace resulted in finish times that were 32 seconds quicker than the finish times from the average-pace starts. Slower starters ran faster final miles, but never made up for time lost at the start.

So basically you will be slightly faster overall by using more power at the start, instead of saving it for the end. And when you are up against 100 other people, a few seconds could mean a few extra places
