Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() On my long training rides 50-100 I stuff my jersey pockets with food. I like bagels, bannana's, cookies and power bars, with an occasional sliced orange. More than just sources of carb's my body really starts to crave fats and protein. When I consume whey protein during long rides my muscles seem become sluggish. So I stay away from protein until after. There is always a chilled chocolate protein shake in the cooler of my car waiting to be consumed immediately after workouts. Edited by Fit4Infinity 2011-02-16 10:21 AM |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() on the topic of nutrition..... Begin noob questions: WHat is a bento box? where are the special needs bags stored during a race? also how do you calculate how much caloric intake you will need? I assume its based on the individual, effort, distance, etc also what do I need to consume? protein? carbs? a combo? Just wondering where to start here. Much appreciated! oh and I started my 10 week to Olympic training yesterday. HERE WE GO! targetting WF on April 30th Edited by pace13 2011-02-16 2:25 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @pace - Bento box is a smallish storage box about 1 inch wide, 3 inches tall, and 4 inches long that is attached to the frame of the bike on race day. It's a convenient location to keep things you want easy access to during the ride. Sometimes it's attached on the top bar of the frame just behind the stem for others it's found just infront of the seat. The name comes from a small japanese lunch boxes. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mark, let me give you some information on Ironman Amy, I saw her at her Ironman race and I saw her actually pick up a piece of used gum on the road as she tried to get any nutrition in her body, any way possible............oh, wait, that was me. Maybe I shouldn't give any advice on the nutrition topic, sorry to bother y'all. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Quick fly by, had a great swim today. The whole "swim downhill" concept finally worked for me. Running tonight. Bike is in the shop for a tune-up so no riding until probably Saturday. Checked out a used CD0.1 last night, almost bought it. But will probably wait for a little while. Mav - I saw that you were still dealing with the pain, really hope it ends soon for you! Pace - I have two bags, a bento box that is behind the stem on the top tube with phone, gels, bars, etc. I have an under seat bag with spare tube, CO2's, tire levers, some $$ for emergencies, spare insurance card in case of accident. Special needs bags - usually only have them for IM distances. Usually you have one for the bike and the run. Usually at the halfway mark for both (mile 56 for bike, mile 13.1 for run). I would not have minded one for the swim back in November. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ha Ha Ha...well I was more than a little unclear on my post about eating on the bike. I was just giving pb and jelly as an example...I also eat chocolate chip cookies (maybe 4) a gel every hour, gatorade or whatever is on the course...I might grab a banana at an aid station....my favorite is a Mountain Dew in my special needs bag!!! I always grab a Mountain Dew at the halfway point of any century ride. And like Billy said...I just eat off the road on the run course. Anything anyone throws down...I just pick it up and eat it if it looks good to me. Did you know if you say banana really slow it sounds like gullible? ![]() |

![]() | ![]() I am finally feeling better and can actually walk a little today without too much pain...progress..I'll take it!!! Nutrition...I will chime in... IT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE!!! YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU!!!! I will say that sodium is hugely important in the HIM and IM distances...if you dont get it right, it can mess up your day!!!! For me: In the HIM distance I drink half strength gatorade. I sip from my bottle ( areo) every mile. I set my Garmin to beep everymile this reminds me to drinkand I dont get bloated from drinking too much at once. I go through a bottle an hour and this keeps me well hydrated. I eat one uncrustable an hour on the bike...I dont eat anything for 1/2 hour before finishing the bike. On the run, I use gels every 45 mins and take water off the course. I will take 2"salt Stick tabs" every hour during the race. 1 hour before the swim...I eat as much of a powerbar as I can stand and drink some gatorade. Plus 2 salt stick tabs IMO Endurolytes suck...they dont have enough sodium, and are a waste of money. FOR IM Before the swim, powerbar, gatorade and 2 salt stick tabs I drink infinit...I dont like it at all... but it works great. I have a formula that is made for my weight and my needs. I drink infinite every mile on the bike which keeps me hydrated. I take 2 salt stick tabs an hour. I fill my bento box with Jelly beans...the gourmet kind...and I take a few every 15 mins or so. This keeps me feeling like I am "eating". On the run I eat gels every 45 mins and I drink water and the FABULOUS CHICKEN BROTH!!!!!!!!UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. I carried a fuel belt with Nunns for a drink but ditched it about 8 miles into the run. There is plenty on the course, no need to carry any extra weight!!! I LOVE CHOCOLATE GU!!!!!!! Its the best!!!! AGAIN... I cannot stress enough that you must find what works best for you. Everyone has different sweat rates, calorie requirements and stomach tolerance. I did over 15, 50-80 mile rides and many 80-100 mile rides with bricks for my IM. I learned through my training what worked and what didnt. Weather also plays a HUGE role in what you will need. Training in all conditions will help you realize what your body needs. Some days you will nail it...others you wont...that experience will help you be successful on race day. As for olys and sprints, hydration and gels are enough. You dont need to eat. Hope this helps ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That is a great post Mav, Thanks! This is probably the biggest unknown I have as I transision from short to long course racing ans training. When and how and how often and what kind f hydration/nutrition I should be taking. Sprints and even oly are over so fast its never really an issue. I have a lot to learn here. I have a 50 mile bike ride this weekend on the IMTX course. A few of the riders are wanting to do two loops. I really hope to have a plan inplace so I can try to do both loops as well. Edited by x_caliber50 2011-02-17 10:47 AM |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree, great post! I know I'm not at those distances yet but I already have nutrition issues. I cannot miss a meal, i have been to the dr and was told I just have a super fast metabolism. I miss a meal and I start getting shakey. I've even passed out a few times (without training!). I have since learned to eat, even little snacks between meals and I'm good. I have an idea that I will probably need nutrition sooner and more often (but I'll confirm that as I go). Mav, your post gives me a good baseline to go by. On a diff note, my LBS is 2 days late delivering my bike ![]() end rant.... :D |

Still knitting arm warmers for billy? I could use a neoprene stocking cap for early season open water swims. @pace - Forgive me if I've already asked this question, ? ![]() | ![]() Actually I am knitting like crazy... a friend is having twins and i have completed two 1/2 blankets and 1 1/2 sweaters....Billy I am working on getting the yarn for the arm warmers...I might need bicep measurements!!!! I walked without crutches today!!!!!!Not far...but it happened Fit Mark...your post was littered with ???????????????????????????????????? not sure what it meant...perhaps you have hit your hand too many times on the side of the pool...LOL Pace, Check out infinit...try a formula made specifically for you...they can make it have a lot of calories. Fluid is much more easily digested than food especially on the long races. Dont think for a minute I like the taste of infinit...cause I DONT!!!! but the stuff works...thats why I chase it with jelly beans ![]() |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Evening all! This week has been a great swim week and had a great (but short) swim today. Hoping to get the bike back from LBS tomorrrow. Weather is supposed to be nice on Saturday and my DW is taking the kids to a presentation she is giving. Perfect time for a long ride! Had a great run last night and actually managed a decent pace for once. The other night I went and checked out a CD0.1 someone was selling. Sweet bike, should have bought it but its a little early for my plans and the upstairs A/C repair is going to cost $1500 so will have to wait. Pace - I don't blame you I would be throwing fits if my new bike was 2 days. Mav - glad you are feeling better! |

Fluid is much more easily digested than food especially on the long races. I will def look into it. Had a good swim today, didnt start that way... was doing the same stuggle to get 50 yards and always winded after that and would have to stop and rest... was also having trouble breathing (getting water in my mouth when trying to breath) anyway finally figured that out, then when i was about to quit I start another lap and just try to relax...and there it is....the effort is minimal and I went 100 yards without stopping and wasnt winded! I did this 3 times just to confirm i had something. I even timed the last 100 yards at 2:30. Slow but felt so good :D |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff, Are you warming up before trying to swim a 100? I have to do a couple of 25s, a couple of 50s with rest in between before i can do a 100. It seems i have to get my breathing regulated and calmed down before i can start going long. After getting warmed up for about 10 minutes, i'm good to go for a couple of 500s. It's like you said, after the warm up i'm relaxed and ready to go. Maybe some of the experienced here have some insight into this. |

![]() | ![]() I usually do a warm up of 100-200 EZ before I begin my sets. The " breathing thing" comes with practice and building endurance...IT will come, just have to keep at it...I promise. When I started I could not do 50 without feeling like I would drown. I now swim 2000-4000 without much effort...really ![]() HAPPY BIRTHDAY LENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ricker9 - 2011-02-18 3:11 AM Jeff, Are you warming up before trying to swim a 100? I have to do a couple of 25s, a couple of 50s with rest in between before i can do a 100. It seems i have to get my breathing regulated and calmed down before i can start going long. After getting warmed up for about 10 minutes, i'm good to go for a couple of 500s. It's like you said, after the warm up i'm relaxed and ready to go. Maybe some of the experienced here have some insight into this. My issues while swimming ranged from getting water in my mouth every breath I took to thinking about 500 things on every stroke (don’t over rotate, keep your head down, slow down, how is this water in my mouth EVERYTIME!, etc etc etc) I was blowing my air out underwater as advised but it was all gone by the time I was around for my next breath and water would get in. I then just saved some breath for right before my next one and voila! Problem solved! Next I’m trying to get to the place where I can swim for a period of time without tracking laps but sheesh, I can’t make it 50 yards without needing a break. I keep looking up at the master swim class board and seeing the programs laid out wondering why the BEGINNER program looks daunting to me. So at the end I just say to myself, I’m going as slow as I can and see if I’m tired…I instantly feel significantly less effort being exerted but holycrap batman I’m going the same speed! Anyways, taking baby steps here, but they are steps! I can’t wait for my next swim! News on the Bike: LBS owner calls yesterday to tell me he’s ‘found’ the tracking number and it shipped on the 14th and will be delivered on the 18th (TODAY!!!). Thanks again everyone for your continued support, encouragement and invaluable advice. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WORK SUCKS!!!! it keeps me away from here far too much. I have been swimming and making very small steps just like Jeff. I Yesterday I had a few laps where I actually felt like I was just breathing in and out in a smooth fashion. As opposed to the gulping for air and hard push to get it out. It was just a few laps that I felt what seemed to be so smooth but I felt it and now I know what it feels like and can work towards it again. Way to much rain to do any biking but I got some runs in with the swimming. No questions today, just an update cause I feel like I dont get here often enough. |

Ended up stopping by Subway afterwards and ate a foot long spicy italian. I justified it by having both lettuce and Spinahch on it ;> ![]() Hoping to join a group ride tomorrow. I have been trying to join them for awhile but the timing has never worked out. |
