rizer22 - 2011-10-05 7:06 AM 6.5 miles in the pitch dark this morning. I did have a light but still a little freaky. It's very rural here, I think 2 street lights on that route and not many houses. Major concern was dogs more than anything else.

Around here I worry about skunks.....they're overpopulated and running all around.  I think the city of Cleveland Heights released a bunch of them when the area had a problem with rats.....now we have a problem with skunks.  LOL

Anyway, good for you for heading outside so early.  I want to do the same, but I'm frightened.  It's so dark at 5!

I always run early mornings outside, but we do have street lights every so often.  I'm mostly afraid of the paper guy, driving from house to house, chucking papers.  It's kind of creepy.

We supposedly have coyotes, but I think they'd eat the cats or geese before they would attempt to tackle me.

I've been really dragging in the mornings this week.  I've gotten in my run workout (per my plan) but have skipped/ditched the B/S workouts.  Today the 3.5 year old was the first up at 6:30 AM... which is insanely late in our house.  Maybe its the change in the seasons, its basically dark until about 630 now.  Yuck.

Yesterday I had a good tempo run at a 7:30 pace for 15 minutes, built from 745-715.  745 felt nice, 715 felt hard.  Today, i'll do some bike intervals and lifting at lunch.

I'm sorry Terry.  That can't be easy.  Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Got what I perceived to be an easy 14.5 mile run in today.  Didn't look at my watch once and just ran on RPE.  About 1:55.  Not too shabby.

I'm thinking about doing the full marathon in Cleveland next May.  Can anyone tell me how that will affect my HIM training?  Or will it not?  HIM is in Sept., so marathon will be 6-7ish weeks into my HIM training.

jarvy01 - 2011-10-05 9:36 AM I'm thinking about doing the full marathon in Cleveland next May.  Can anyone tell me how that will affect my HIM training?  Or will it not?  HIM is in Sept., so marathon will be 6-7ish weeks into my HIM training.

Training for a marathon and a HIM at the same time is really hard.  The first issue is that the marathon takes a lot out of you and it takes a while to recover post-race.  I'm guessing you want to do Flying Pig (May 5, 2012) which is about 16 weeks before Rev 3 Cedar Point.  You probably have enough time to recover, the problem is, you really won't be back to full training load until early June-ish giving you 3 months to train for the HIM.

The other issue with marathon training is that the number of run miles is pretty high and tends to cut into (particularly) your biking volume.  If your goal is to do really well on the HIM, I don't think doing the marathon is the best idea (now a November marathon post- Rev 3 would be a whole different story).

If you really want to do the marathon I would suggest working with a coach who can help structure your training.  Trying to double the double is really tricky and doing it by yourself increases the chances of injury.

While it doesnt happen often, i agree with kelly here.  I would pick a fall mary - i am planning on Marine Corp in DC at the end of october 2012 - which should be a nice family trip to boot.

I know you are excited about new distances but they will all be there for many years to come and then some!

Thank you both so much for the advice.  The HIM is my goal race for the year, and I certainly don't want a marathon to affect my training for it.  I probably need at least another year or two of running before I tackle 26.2 anyway.  I have some obvious muscular imbalances and would benefit from more volume building in general.  Appreciate the insight and will probably nix the marathon (because I want to run it well when I do decide to do it)!!!

In other news Erica (trilooney) had her baby (about a month early after spending the last 2 weeks in the hospital).

Laina Brynn Debowski -- 5 lbs, 7 oz.

Nice work, Scott.

I always perform much better without the watch.  Haven't a clue as to why!

Snow time!

Got in a 4 mile run this afternoon, mostly to clear my head after getting my rejection from the job I thought I had sewn up. Back to the land of interviews.

Gloucester Cross weekend race report

Well, i traveled 3+ hours stayed at a friends house for the weekend. Woke to pouring rain on Saturday, which cleared out at the race site, right up until the start of the 8am race, then it poured till shortly after the 10am race. I was in the 9am Cat4 35+ field. Started in about 8th row, whistle goes off, was 18th or so by corner# 5, held position for first lap, then went chernobyl. by the end of lap 2 i was in the 40's by the end i was 74/110. Pea soup mud, really slick off camber corners, it was totally awesome. I sucked big time, I was filthy dirty and covered in mud, and i had the best time ever. hung out the rest of the day in the beer garden, spent a few bucks on beer for me and for handups during the m1-3, 3 and elite races, i had as much fun giving beer out as drinking it.

Sunday was almost a carbon copy of Saturday, but the rain held off, and a much drier and faster track awaited us to race on. Similar starting position, but a hangover, sore calf, and lack of importance after the previous days meltdown left me without the same desire to charge the start and get ahead. So i sat in, took my lumps, let it all sort out, and sucked to a wonderful 82/102 finish. The track was certainly set up better for me, but i just couldn't get my head totally in the race.

I was actually a bit disappointed, i had a great road season, have enough points to upgrade to CAT 3, won a race, bunch of podiums, but in CX i just suck. I am bigger (210lbs) so i think all the climbing accelerating really wears me down. I dunno, this is my favorite discipline of bike racing, and i just suck at it, I have a hard time getting in the top half of a field, kinda frustrating. But i will be back at Providence this weekend for round 2 of the Holy Week of Cross in New England. Maybe i will do better, i know i will have fun!!!
