![]() | ![]() GaryRM - 2011-02-18 3:15 PM Hey all! Had a short but great swim today except at the end I was starving. Ended up stopping by Subway afterwards and ate a foot long spicy italian. I justified it by having both lettuce and Spinahch on it ;> ![]() Hoping to join a group ride tomorrow. I have been trying to join them for awhile but the timing has never worked out. Gary I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!! Perhaps I should knit you a speedo!!!! I remember when you had trouble with a lap or two...Youve come a long way!!!! You should be so proud!!!!! |

Of course thats a 19.5 Jammer not a Speedo. Have a good weekend everyone. Swim,Bike,Run Happy! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a really nice bike ride today. 26 miles in great weather, 60 and sunny! I also found out that i have actually learned from my past experiences. A couple of months ago, i had a nasty fall when i hit a patch of ice. I learned NOT to try to catch yourself with your hand if you go down. I came to an intersection todayand didn't clip out quick enough and.....yep, over i went. But the good news was i remembered to not try to catch myself with my hand, just tucked the elbows in and let the shoulder hit and roll. It worked pretty good. I just hope this isn't something i have to use very often. Damn clipless pedals!! And why are they "Clipless"? They CLIP in!! OK, just had to post something, now it's time for yard work. Have a nice day all!! Rick Edited by ricker9 2011-02-19 10:38 AM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Add a finish line for me. I did the Polar Bear Run downtown Indy. There was a 3 and a 5 mile run. I did the 5 mile run with my brother and brother-in-law. It's a beautiful day but tomorrow isn't going to be so nice. Now that I have had a taste of the warm weather I am sooooo ready for it! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Rick - If no one saw you, it wasn't a fall. That was a delayed dismount. How is your bike? @Amy - Congrates on your Polar Bear Run finish. I saw the sun today, it was frightening then I remembered what it was. 10 miles run on packed gravel with a traces of ice and some really cold water where the sun melted the ice. I am so ready for warm weather. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! 34 miles on the road yesterday followed by another 10 on the trainer. Today is a long run but typical busy weekend with Pony club, traveling for soccer team, etc is really eating into workout time. Beautiful weather here, almost too warm. LOL! Have to agree that if no one saw it then it didn't happen. You were practicing your safety roll! Amy congrats on the race! One more tidbit - DD is doing Girls on the run and at the end they do a 5k. Looks like I get to do it with her! Very cool! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow - busy busy busy....here are some thoughts: Mark - pre-hydrate, pre-hydrate, pre-hydrate - that way there are no issues. Jeff - kurt kinetic and cyclops are both good. Neither is silent but they are not as loud as the cheap ones. They are also more stable. Be sure you get a block to raise your front wheel. Otherwise your balance is off. Mark - I eat more solid on the bike and use more gels on the run if I want something different than Infinit. That is one of the good things with Infinit - all the calories and electrolytes you need in a drink. Do you have a bottle you wear or carry? Essential at these distances. Fuel and water are CRITICAL. Gels and Water - you should drink approximately 8 oz of water with EACH gel ingested. Mark - infinit has single serving packs of their base formulas you can order for less money. I have a custom formula I use that they mix up for me. You can tweak it as you need to - for example, I am a heavy sweater and so I dial up the electrolytes (but watch the osmoality), also I have a lower flavor powder I use when I make concentrated bottles so they aren't too flavorful. It is also not unusual to have the owner andswer the phone and consult with you. Food and Drink - okay, after a few years of trial and error and a lot of study....you need about 250-300 (think less, not more) calories per hour. However you get them. You also need 18-34 ounces of liquid each hour. Eating is the fifth discipline (and for MAV - shopping is the sixth). Boredom can be a problem but the key is to set up a plan - then test it in training. So here is my plan for an Ironman for fueling...by the way...for as many Ironman finishers as there are, there are that many fueling plans.... 2am - up to eat breakfast - 300 calories - Cheerios, peanut butter and jelly uncrustable, a bit of a Naked smoothie and a water. You eat that early to let nature take it's course and it should all be vacated by 5 or 5:30. 4:30am - about 150 calories or so - a banana and sip on some Infinit. The Infinit sipping continues throughout the morning until it is gone....then it is all water. Some people pop a gel right before the swim - I never have but if you do - be sure to add 8 oz of water. Once on the bike - first 20-30 minutes - nothing but water - trying to settle the stomach from the sloshing and unsettling of the swim. Then it is Infinit - I use 2x concentrate bottles (4 scoops, lower flavor mix) be sure to drink at least as much water to dilute the Infinit to normal strength. Every aid station (approx every 40 minutes or so) you should grab a water bottle at the front of the aid station - slam a drink - fill your aero bottle then drop this bottle ---- get another bottle - slam another drink as needed, be sure aero is full and trash this bottle at the final trash drop. Some races are hot and you need more water but really be careful in the cool ones - you must drink and eat. Mark your 2 hour Infinit bottle and be sure you are half way through in one hour. Finished in two and go to your second bottle (we will cover all this later too). When you stop to pee or stretch you will refill bottle one with powder you are carrying). Here is the critical thing - IT IS MUCH EASIER TO EAT ON THE BIKE THAN ON THE RUN - YOU CANNOT MISS CALORIES HERE. You must eat (or drink the calories). I also carry an uncrustable for something different and I tape a couple of gels on the bike (apple cinnamon Hammer gel - like apple pie) for variety. I use fruit punch Infinit on the bike. Run - I move to orange Infinit. Here is where you gotta force yourself through the calories. At some point you are going to not want to eat. You must. If you can't do the Infinit or the gel anymore, you gotta eat at the buffet called an aid station. Careful here. There are a billion calories at every aid station - think - oranges, bananas, cookies, pretzels, chicken broth (after dark), Perform, and various and other items. How many pretzels (the little ones) make up a 100 calories? Don't overeat. If you do, re-setting your stomach is the only way (think finger down the throat) - this is not fun after the day you have had. On the run, I personally take in fewer calories. If you have properly fueled on the bike - taking in half the calories you think you need on the run will not hurt you. Too many calories will. After race - you will not remember the first two pieces of pizza you eat but you will remember who greets you at the finish line.....forever.

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fit - aim at the 250 calorie level and see how you feel. Whey screws with my stomach....can't do it working out... I agree with Mav - Endurolytes are a rip off - I used to use them now I use Miracle Salt. Jeff - good job on the swim....keep working....or relaxing and I promise it will work. Graham - keep working on the swim....we are here when you have time....well some folks are - I am almost as non-existent as you. FINISH LINES - I got Amy's finish line and mine from the half marathon yesterday BUT has anyone else crossed a finish line in 2011? For you new folks, we track finish lines as a team....you get one....it goes on page one....keep me posted. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rick - while they do clip in, they are clip less. They are named after the old cages (originally called clips). At least that is what I am told. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Way to go Graham!!!!!!!!! Hey Gary, I coached a Girls on the Run group at my school a couple years ago. I ran with one of the girls and it was sooo much fun! She was about ready to stop when we were probably .75 miles from finish...I kept talking and pushed her...and she was so so so happy when she crossed the line. She was about to kill me right before we crossed but she was so happy when she did finish that she forgot all about being mad at me! lol Anyway it is a great program. Have fun!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a major breakthrough in the pool last night. Normally, it takes me 19 to 20 strokes to cover the 25 yard distance in the pool. Our instructor made a small change to my stroke and suddenly, I was covering the distance in............16 strokes! Not sure about the time difference yet but will report back later on that. I would tell y'all what the difference was but I might be competing against you in a race and I can't have you knowing my secrets now can I? |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() soooo i thought we were a TEAM Billy??? I think I am still at like 26 strokes which I hear is terrible :/ on a good note I did swim 1000 yards yesterday, my longest distance to date. Yeah I did stop every now and then but certainly not every 50 yards like I used to. I also have trouble counting my strokes as I get distracted trying to also focus on breathing, rotation, etc...ugh. Im making progress though.... onward and upward! on a "I'm not longer shocked at this" note....my bike STILL isnt here..."supposed" to be in today (I have heard this 4 times now) and If I didnt already have a deposit down I'd have already gone somewhere else. With the weather not being great I have let it simmer and I'll see how he treats me when it gets here. SO far I have been cordial on the phone and I'll give him the oportunity to make it right....we'll see. oh and it might snow here in the bay area this weekend, which it hasnt done in decades I think....perfect riding weather.... |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff - Sweet!!!! Billy - Last time I counted I hit 19-20 for 25ms. I can go lower but its stroke, glide to almost a stop, stroke, repeat and even then its not much lower. Funny, I have very little problems counting laps but counting strokes always throws me off. LRR - PM'ed you. Mav - hope things are going well. Trying week at work, oh well we all have them. Tried to swim yesterday and after 500m I just bagged it. Borrowed goggles, etc just didn't work. Managed 1+ hrs last night on the trainer. Felt good. Hoping for a 5k run tonight and another attempt at swimming. My first Tri of the season is a little over a month away so I'd better pick it up some. Sorry I missed everyone else, will catch up later. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mav - wow- that kinds choked me up. As far as my "you will never forget who greets you at the line". Get your wife/husband/SO to volunteer as a catcher at the finish during your projected time. Unbelievable. We were able to get Al back -Al is Mr Mav - to catch her. Watching that and being part of it was way way cool. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff, congratulations....now put on those miles!! I had a nice swim this morning. 1800 yds. The rib is still a little uncomfortable taking a deep breath while stretching out, but it's good enough to start swimming harder. Ran a quick 25 minutes this evening. I think by March 19th, my first tri of the year, i can get my 5k time down to about 25-26 minutes. Still a little concerned about the warmup for a pool swim. I NEED WARMUP TIME!! |
