Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Terrible kick today, need some HELP. I've tried with rolling hips, with flexi knees, with straight legs, lots of small kicks, Great bigs kicks. I've even tried frothy, foaming, breaking the surface with crazy legs, but it's not working. I can lay face down in my best stream line pose and kick, kick, kick and not move an inch. This is an improvement over when I would kick and move backwards. I have accepted this for a while with the justification of "Hey, I race in a full wet suit and I don't need a kick. Save the energy for the run." Not sure about the justification anymore. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know exactly how you feel. I am really in the same boat. The justification that you don't need a kick is not and excuse. It is a vary valid point. Save your legs for the bike and run, only kick enough to stabilize your body. In regards to the kick still sucking, it will get better and better, the longer you work on it, but what difference does it make, you aren't going to kick in the tri so don't sweat it! My 2 cents. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow Peeps! You always hear people say listen to your body and found that to be soooo true. My brother in law is 42 years old and training for his first Ironman. He is going to do Louisville and Florida with me. Anyway he was having heart palpitations so decided to get checked out since he is training so much. His doctor ordered a stress test. The stress test showed an abnormality so he was sent to have a heart scan. He found out he has a 90% blockage!! He was given nitro to carry at all times, was told no physical activity and he has to get the blockage taken care of ASAP. The good news is a leading doctor at IU med center is going to do a cath Monday. He feels confident that he can place a stint and Mark can resume normal activity and training within 48 hours. Hoping that all works out. Anyway you would never guess he could have such a severe blockage. So I'm just saying if you have any weird symptoms get it checked out...better safe than sorry....you just never know!!!!!!! Edited by amyleigh 2011-03-04 11:56 PM |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WoW Amy good catch! That is scary stuff. We will keep him in our prayers. Keep us updated. I had to take all of last week off. I have known all along that I was going to take last week off and planned for it. None the less I was stressed all week not training. However, today I got back on it and went for a 6 mile run. I felt pretty good. But when I got home I did the math and found that I improved my per mile pace by almost 40 seconds. I ran a 9m30s mile pace (that is really fast for me) I did not feel like I was going faster??? But I did notice my heart rate was a little higher. I thought that was because I took 5 days off and was actually a little pissed about it. Anyway, after doing the math I am in a great mood now! Plus my wife got me an "ITRI" shirt so I feel cool.... |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! Sorry I have been MIA but work has been nuts and it has affected my training somewhat. I still need to get some long rides in and am a bit worried about it. Raining here today with lightning so no ride but a 6+ mile run before the lightning came in. Amy - very scary but I am glad they picked it up. Selling my current bike on eBay and picked up a Seduza with Dura ace pretty cheap. While not a new Speed concept or a CD0.1 I think its a big step up for me and am really excited to try it out! Should be here next week. Edited by GaryRM 2011-03-05 1:20 PM |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First the bad news - a fraternity brother of mine, 3 years younger, died this week on the slopes at Vail of a massive coronary....so, yeah, Amy -- great catch. RIP David.... Now, for better stuff Glenn - I want you to walk early in your runs....you gotta save the energy and manage it....you will go longer and faster...I guarantee...and then you can post a BITE ME BRYAN. Also, any workout over an hour needs to include calories....let me know if you need help but there is a bunch of material just a few pages back. Fit - no worries on the kick my friend....I have some friends whose coach told them DON'T KICK AT ALL....because they were going backwards....their finish times improved....saved legs and stuff like that....so...here is what I do....a little flutter kick just to get my body rotated....that is about it....by the way....kick board workouts....I don't do them...they bore me and take too long. And anyway, I have never entered a tri where they let me use a kickboard anyway.....so....swim and swim like drills...that's where it is at....also, less stress dude.... |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fit - good deal...remember plans and peoples opinions are just that...you gotta do what is right for you. But remember this, of all the people I know who have done an IRONMAN or twenty - NO ONE HAS EVER DONE EVERY WORKOUT COMPLETELY ACCORDING TO THEIR PLAN. The difficult thing is to listen to you body (check Amy's post) and adapt and improvise as necessary. One of the most important things you are going to do on race day is pay attention to what your body is saying to you - check that - it is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. By race day you will have your plans dialed in to the point that you do not have to think - just do. You will have the confidence that it will work so you will just do it. I wrote BELIEVE down the inside of one arm and EXECUTE down the other for both of my races - it was a great reminder to just "DO". Then you can focus on everything around you, to totally remember the day and the experiences...like getting spanked with a bullwhip on the run in Florida by six scantily clad women (Amy was not at that party - but she will probably get the bullwhip this year) and also that moment when you KNOW just KNOW you are going to be an IRONMAN. Feelings that cannot be described...I challenge the rest of you to describe them....words just aren't enough. That's why I say "less stress" - I want you to remember the day as well as the journey...you are becoming a better person every day - keep improving. Ironman is much more than 140.6Gary - nice ride....name yet? |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello Everyone, no time to do anything lately. between the weather, work and getting ready to move, my training has suffered I did get to ride again, just a few miles and now a new question. How do you tell if a hill is a tough one or a small one? I want to find the tough ones to train on (or for) but I dont want to train on an easy one and then get killed later. Thanks! |

Jeff....If you have to ask................the hill is not a difficult hill. Trust me on this...you will know when a hill is difficult. It will hurt. Or do you mean you just need to find hills? Go out and drive some roads. Look for a long climb. Long hills are fun...lol. You can also look on mapmyride at bike routes and read descriptions of rides in your area. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! Sorry to have been MIA... Between kids being sick on and off and me feeling under the weather for a few days (but not really being able to fully rest since I'm chasing my little monkeys all day long), well, I just haven't had the energy to log on and talk here.... anyhoooo... I did my 20 mile run on Sunday. Went ok, except I went running with a head cold, so by mile 8 my head and my throat were NOT happy, but what can you do? I also totally misjudged sunset time (never done that long of a run that late in the day), so I ran in pitch black for over 2 miles, until I could get off the path and finish in the neighborhoods close to home for the last 4 miles (at least some light from houses and street lamps). That was kind of fun, NOT. But, the run got done ![]() I'm on my last 3 weeks of P90X and then embarking on my first HIM training. will catch up with everybody in the next couple of days ![]() |

That was kind of fun, NOT. But, the run got done ![]() You're not the only one in LLR that's seriously misjudged sunset time. Last fall, the day after we turned back our clocks from daylight savings, I ran the last 6miles of a 16mile trail run in near total darkness. It was a stormy night with the only light coming up from the hwy in the valley below, and 5 miles away. Thats not much. I was having one of those runs, when everything feels good, even though its raining hard, the wind is blowing up a big storm and it's getting dark. There were plenty of opportunities to turn around or detour back to civilization, but where's the adventure in that. Coming down off the mountain, a couple of hours into a really good 'Runners high', running in total darkness, all I could think about was being stalked by mountain lions or being eaten by a bear. Every snapping twig was a cougar, every dark shadow was a bear. Freaking myself out. Needless to say I was hyper motivated to run very fast and to run very quiet. It's still one of my favorite running trails even with the posted signs that say 'Mountain Lions and Bears in the area, Don't feed the wildlife.' |

So far this week has been horrible for workouts. My cold has pretty much killed most of my workouts. Hoping next week is better. |
