From Carrie w/r/t the Chicago Marathon:

A PR by about 6 minutes, but similar result as fox valley for different reasons. Signed up for the 5:45 pace group (3:1 ratio). She started us at about a minute per mile too fast. She dropped out to the bathroom at mile 2 and I took over pacing til mile 8 or so.  Garmin wasn't working again (or the HR monitor) so I kept us accidentally a 1 minute per mile to fast. Thankfully the pacer showed back up at 8 but I was blown up... Got dizzy going to the bathroom. Was soaking myself in water all day. Walked for a but, got myself back in it, but then battled with calf and foot cramps from mile 9 on....Oh yeh, and I was literally running out of endurolytes until a friend who jumped in to run with me at 18 told me to open the pills and dump them on my tongue to absorb faster.. it's the only reason I lasted!!!

Yikes.  Sounds fairly miserable.

One more story from this weekend.  Shaun and I did the Great River Ride.  6000 feet of climbing in 70 miles.

We were riding with a bunch of roadies who thought that I was Shaun's daughter.  Too funny.

Roadies areof questionable intellect, but perhaps the climbing cut off oxygen to their brains? I'm sure Shaun appreciated that.

Up on the trainer this morning but I messed up my chain.  Shaun needs to fix the bike so I'll have to finish the bike tonight.  Not funny.  Off to run now.  Hopefully my legs will have something back from this weekend.

I know there has been a lot of talk about this on the tri forum, but it is something I have been thinking a lot about recently too. I would love your opinions. As you know I am new to tri this year. I have a cheap specialized road/hybrid type bike now. I would like to upgrade but I am not sure if I want a road bike or a tri bike. The discussions on the tri forum have just confused me more. I don't have $3-4K to spend and would like to buy used (anyone selling?LOL). I probably only want to spend $1K or just over. I like doing the group rides with the tri store if that make a difference.

I am confused on the point of which people consider more comfortable - tri or road?

Opinions anyone?

If I were only going to have one bike it would be a road bike.  It's just more versitile.  Right now I can do group rides with my tri team and fit in, but I can also do other group rides and/or charity rides and not get the side eye for bringing a tri bike to the party.  Plus if you ever decide to get out of triathlons you're not stuck with a unitasker.

Morning, all.  Recovery run this morning did not feel so great.  I had to stop and stretch my calf muscle a few times.  I love the new shoes though!  I think they will be a great fit.  I happily threw away my Asics on Sunday after the half.   They smelled like sweat and urine....nasty.

I feel fat.  LOL   I think I'm retaining some water from the weekend/race.  Hope it goes away soon.  I feel so lazy when I'm not training 15 hours a week.  Guess I should just enjoy it, because I'll be right back in the grind soon enough.

Have a great day!!

I'm new like you, so I'm intereted in opinions on this subject, too.  I bought a Giant Defy this past Feb.  I think it cost me $1200.  I love it.  It's a great bike.  I'm going to stick with it for the next 2 years, too (2012 for the 70.3 distance, and again in 2013 for 2 70.3s....if I like that distance).  If at some point I decide to go for the full Iron distance, then I'll probably invest in the tri bike.  I won't do it before then though.  I figure I'll have 3 years under my belt by then, and I'll know how competitive I can be.  Then I'll fork out the $$ for the new bike.

You feel fat?  I bought a bright yellow Zoot tri top so my family could pick me out in a crowd better.  Feel like a bloated banana I tell ya.

I always retain water post race.  Totally normal and will go away in a few days.  You are not fat.

How tall are you.  I have a 2007 52 cm Qunitana Roo Tequilo with Dura Ace sitting in my garage doing nothing.  I was telling Shaun this weekend how I wished we knew someone who needed a tri bike.

x2, i retain a lot after a race, like a dead deer on the side of the road in summer.

Jenny, my thighs are bigger than your waist, you are hardly fat, lol!!!

i personally would go with a road bike, much more versatile, there are some great deals in the $500-$1500 range. While a Tri bike is a nice option, if i were to be limited to one bike, it would be a roadie.

As i pointed out in the Entry level bike thread, the Kestrel Talon road or Tri are available for around $1500 new, they are the same frame with different handlebar setups. For a full carbon bike with a good shimano group that price is very very reasonable. And if you decide you want a Tri bike, sell the road stuff and put on Tri bars or leave it as is and put clip on bars on it.

Why are you training at all?  You should take the whole week off, get a massage, do something non-endurance sport related.  Its important to take breaks.  Further, you said your a little banged up... heal my friend.  You cannot maintain top form all of the time.

I am four days away from my half mary. i have been dealing with this very tight and painful calf injury that is bike related. Today was forst day in a week I was pain free.  Pain free is rellative -it is still tender if massaged. SHould I run at all between now and Sunday and risk it tightening back up or just coast into the race as pain free as possible?

Rest rest rest (and ice and compression).  You're not going to gain any fitness between now and Saturday and its not with risking re-aggravating it.

Good morning!

I decided to take the advice I've gotten from Jeff, Rudy, and Kelly, and I'm taking it down a notch this month   I'm going to focus more on active recovery - stuff like walking, yoga, elliptical (I have an elliptical in my basement that has 3 inches of dust on it...LOL), and strength training.  Obviously I wasn't ready to run yesterday, and if I were to continue pushing myself this week, then I'd probably just get hurt.  I am going to start running again next week though, all easy miles, but I'm going to keep it at 15-20 mpw for 5 weeks or so.  I LOVE running.  It keeps me centered, focused, and calm.  It's a huge part of my life now.  October and November are my months to do whatever I want before things get more plan oriented again.  Thanks for reminding me that I need to slow down!!!

I need to learn to take my foot off the gas too.  So I think I'm pretty well decided on the 5 races I want to do next year to keep my entry fees in the "happy wife" zone.  Winning my fantasy football league would go a long way towards helping too.  Oh and finishing up my PT cert.  Just need to get that darn CPR training done.

I have no problem taking my foot of the gas right now ... I am completely fine with being a total slouch!!!  I am enjoying it.  I still get that little devil in my ear telling me I am going to lose fitness, I am going to lose all that I have worked months for .... I just ignore and am just enjoying not having anything whatsoever to do!!!

I don't even care about active recovery (except for walkign the dogs), I don't want to do anything.  I feel pretty awesome considering I just ran 2 marathons in 3 weeks.  Not really even sore anymore!!!  The rest of the month is mine to do with it as I wish!

I wish I felt the same way.  I'm addicted to the endorphins.  Plus, I like having structure to my day, and structured training helps me structure the other things in my life, too.  I have to make myself rest, because I truly love being so active.   I have to remind myself that my body needs this, otherwise I won't be able to continue doing what I'm doing healthily.

Congratulations on finishing your second marathon!  You should be very proud, Carrie!
