Any ideas on how to stay in shape for the 8 days I am in Haiti.  I cannot venture off of the clinic grounds due to safety.  There is no pool, treadmill, or stationary bike there.

I am going to work my core, and use this as time to convince myself that life is more important than sport.

I used to do 10 down. 10 sit ups, jumping jacks and push ups, then 9, then 8 all the way down to 1 where you hold the push ups and sit ups half way. If done quickly its pretty good short cardio too and can be done in a limited space.

What an opportunity.Have a great trip.I can't wait to hear the details.

Signed up for Sprint on June 27th and OLY on July 11th.  I planned on them all along, but paying the fee really puts them on the map.  Gearing up for 25k on May 8th and waiting on lottery for NYC Marathon in November.

Excellent! Nowyou are committed (or as my wife says maybe I should be committed)

Good news!!!  Weather forecast for my race on Saturday has changed!  No more snow showers-it will be 26 and feeling like 14 with the windchill, but I have been running out in that all winter!

Bad news-my left knee pretty much gave way today.  I only ran two miles and it was very uncomfortable.  Couldn't even walk to the library-felt like a total wimp driving the four blocks...but I want to stay off it as much as possible.
I have iced and will continue to ice 20 minutes, 10 min off.
Any other suggestions-besides the rolling pin-I will do that too.
At least I don't have anything scheduled for tomorrow(other than driving to the hotel and getting some excellent food at my friend's organic restaurant!) and can take it easy.

My race starts at 8:30 on Saturday if you want to send up a prayer, I would appreciate it.  Thanks!
Nichi
p.s. checked out my route and a lot of it is running by a lake-pretty cool!

Good luck in Haiti -- I am sure things will go smoothly for you. Core workouts + + + and stay safe.

Nichi...good luck on Sat...hoping that knee turns itself around in the next couple of days!! yikes...

Great job on signing up for races...funny how that paying thing makes it more real

Happy training all!!

Hey everyone!

Race day began at a little before 6-my daughter and I went down to the hotel lobby and had some yogurt and a couple of pieces of toast with peanut butter.  I also drank my drink that was supposed to be good for my joints.

We left the hotel a little after 7 and arrived in Emmetsburg about 7:45.  Saw my friend Sandy as I was getting out of the car and we walked in to pick up our packets.(She did the fun run, because she has been struggling with an upper respiratory infection.)  Made a trip to the bathroom and waited for everyone to start moving outside.  My daughter Cassidy took my picture as I was walking with the group to the starting line.

It was sunny, 23degrees and 16-19 mph winds!  On Thursday when I ran it was 54!  So, it was suppposed to feel like 9 degrees, I think.  The wind was brutal.

I could feel my knee-it was uncomfortable until mile 10 and then it got worse, but I just kept plodding along, knowing it wasn't too far until the end.  My right quad and groin were bothering me-not sure if it was because of compensation for the knee?  Anyway, between the two problems it was painful but not impossible!  I kept repeating,
"I can do all things through Christ who gives me the strength I need."

2 Hours 39 minutes and 6 seconds later I crossed the finish line and ended up getting a 2nd place medal(although the award ceremony was already over!)  Ha! Ha!
I am beyond happy that I was able to start and finish and am recuperating and stretching and listening to my body.

Thank you for all of your encouragement and kind words.
Nichi
p.s.  I did do Cherry blasters from power bar(they worked fine)
more later!

Thanks!  Now I hope I don't regret it-since my knee is in pretty bad shape-maybe I will call myself a swimmer instead of a runner for awhile...I will recup-just don't know how long it will take...four block walk to the library and I can feel the knee-I ran about 12 feet today and it was okay-it's a start!

Ice is my friend!

Thanks!  When I asked my family to pray for me that night(we were all in the hotel room together) my six year old daughter prayed that I would get a medal! Nice frosting on the cake.  Now she tells me that she hopes I will get better and that if it's not better by Christmas she will send me a get well card!

She likes to ride her bike with me when I run and is missing that-me too!

Just thought I would mention that a recent report stated that

"just being near someone who exercises increases their health"

It was in runner's world and I don't have it sitting next to me, but I can attest to the fact that my whole family is healthier because of my exercising!

Don't you think having a family reunion fun run would be a good tradition!
Nichi
I will have to look up the information and bring it with me on the next trip to the library.

Hey everyone I have a new tool for you to try for training. It kicked my rear in 3 minutes and 53 seconds tonight. Yep it is a .....jump rope. Great addition to workouts if a nyone is looking for a new tool in the tool bag.

So how is everyone doing. I don't think I have checked in with everyone in a while. How is training? What are your successes?

mdslngr - 2010-03-24 7:50 AM great job Nichi!

Thanks for the report!

Thanks!!!
just walking around getting groceries did my knee in last night-I have been spending my days with my feet and knees up and still it's bad, so might need to go see the doctor.  My legs, feel great and I would run if I could just take this old knee out and put a new one in!!!  J.K.  I told my husband I would dream about running last night, cuz it's starting to get to me a little.  I know you can relate with your ITB issues.  Strangely enough, this is the other knee.  The right one is fine.

Hopefully will get some swimming in tonight.
