Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Kudos to Simon on his weekend adventure! Thanks for sharing a great report. Good few days... Saturday...56+ miles cycling averageing 19.8 with fairly windy conditions. I was going to go 60, but...well...I didn't. I have the 24-Hour Challenge in June where I want to go at least 200 miles. (Which is short by the standards of the studs and stud-ets who show up and take names). Sunday...10.25 mile run...averaging 7:26 (semi-relaxed, but steady run while listening to podcasts...I need to leave that crutch at home). Tonight...First Rapid Wheelmen 15 Mile TT of the season (Local Bike Club). I don't know the results because I had to bolt back home and I failed to hit the button on my bike computer in the excitement of my start. I'll give more information later. I know my return trip I averaged about 23 mph (7.5 miles-ish). My goals were 24 mph and a top 10 finish. We'll see. Tomorrow...I MIGHT brave the cold waters of our lake for a swim. ...or I might wimp out and go to the pool. To be continued... Peace, ~Sam |

Champion 6046 New York, NY | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Brownie28 - 2010-05-02 11:12 AM My pathetic, awful, injury-riddled April:
I hurt my right knee/leg the last weekend of March and things went drastically downhill from there. A few weeks of rest didn't help so Boston was out, then a few more weeks of rest and it became apparent that I need an MRI and at minimum PT, potentially surgery. The bike numbers were awful as well, I was off and on the bike in the hopes of eliminating the leg pain but to no avail. So May will be a completely different story, there probably won't be a single run mile this month but I'm gonna try to average about 150 miles a week on the bike prepping for the B2B (bike race, not IM). Well on my way after 85 this weekend. As far as racing, Boston obviously didn't happen and REV3 in June is out as well. Timberman is the only 'A' race I'm holding out hope for...we'll see what the MRI has to say about that--keeping my fingers crossed! Hope everyone's training is going better than mine, we've had some beautiful days recently here in Boston, training in this kind of weather is like heaven on Earth. hey I can feel you here my friend - my TOTAL run volume for 2010 is about what I should be doing a month.... but April:
knees are tough. I am still going down to florida HIM - figure I will do the swim and see if knee can handle the bike just take it easy and treat it like base training and the run??? doubtful.... I am HOPING to do Rev3 but will see... Edited by TriToy 2010-05-03 8:54 PM |

Regular 58 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Hey guys, questions for all you Timberman vets out there. How feasable is it to drive in on race day? I'm going to be staying with a friend about 1.5 hrs away, I'm not worried about getting up or driving in, but I didn't know how crazy it is, if there's more than a 1-lane road into the park, etc. Thanks! |

Of course I jest, yours remains an outstanding effort. Sam you inspired me to try a 30K TT next weekend in NJ, I entered Cat 4/5 as recommended by the race director. Should be fun, I'm really looking forward to it. |

Regular 91 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread So I'm following the beginner HIM plan here on BT for Timberman. Well, this week I was thinking how the plan really steps it up but that's ok because it is a build week etc. Last night I'm talking on the phone with a friend who is also doing Timberman saying I can't believe the bike was a two hour ride and the distance of the run etc. She proceeds to tell me that her week says something different. Go figure I printed off week 16 of the ironman plan. I thought I was just being a wimp. I don't think I will be training for a full ironman anytime soon. I could not believe the volume of the training plan. Hope training is going well for everyone. |

Peace, ~Sam Yeah, I will admit I have been curious about the TT racing, but the truth is that running is more my forte, so if Im not training, du'ing or tri'ing, I am more likely to run a 5k or something. I will live vicarioulsly through you two for now. Maybe this fall or next year! |

You will go from your initial fear of not making the cut-off to being ready for the Ironman distance. Problem solved. |

Next time stay for the weekend I have Mother's Day festivities to attend to so won't be biking today. If you go, stay warm, brrr... Yesterday I did 90 min ride/45 min run and felt great afterwards; could have run more but had to pickup son from a bday party. Still, it felt good. Perhaps next Sunday we can get the NJ peeps together for a ride. train safe! j |

Next time stay for the weekend FWIW, it was warmer in NJ than in SD. Everyday hi 60's / lo 70's. Very breezy. Not that I'm complaining. Was great for golf!! Best part - watching this skinny little dude ride up Torrey Pines Park - about a mile up 8% grade. I saw him do it 5x and he was still going strong. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Ok, I was hoping to post my race report, but there is some information that is difficult to obtain at the moment. The bottom line is this...I had fun, it was worthwhile, and I performed fairly well. It was a challenging course, but that certainly made it interesting. I was a reluctant racer of the Olympic Distance because I hadn't raced this particular distance in a long time, but I think I held my own enough to produce a respectable outcome. My goals were to have a reasonable swim...(aka not completely suck)...,average 22-23 mph on the bike (yeah...no...not on this course), and have a solid run. Then I wanted to place in the top 10 in my age group; given a strong field. The results: 1. I did have a reasonable swim! 2. I did NOT averaged 22-23 mph (acceptable given the challenging course, but 21 mph would have been nice)...I think I averaged around 20.4...? 3. I placed 6th in my age-group after coming out of the water in 20th, but I think I could have been 4th if I had done a few things better. Overall: I had a positive experience, it was worth my while, and I am returning home without an injury. These are always key components to a successful event. I HOPE to have a "formal" race report via Beginner Triathlete format soon. Peace, ~Sam |
