missyNZ - 2010-02-11 3:52 AM Wow your snow even made it onto our national news tonight.. Philadelphia I think it was.

haven't trained for two days as work got in the way and was unwell today.. funny how now two days without exercise just feels so bad!

Another funny snippet for you.. when I was out training with my tri group on Tuesday there was another elderly couple out by the harbour having a picnic.. the lady wandered over to me and asked what we were doing.  I explained we were training for a triathlon and then when we came out of the the water and stripped our wetsuits off for the bike ride (it was raining by then), she wandered back past me and hissed 'you're crazy, you know!' hahaha but it's a good crazy right??

Hope all is going well everyone

Helloooooo????

anyone home?

Yeah, I'm here. It's been quite a week. Tuesday/Wednesday's snow hit us pretty hard. I kept waiting for the plow to go through and it didn't hit our street until sometime on Thursday. I had to get to work on Thursday so I put a shovel in my truck, put it in 4 wheel drive and headed out. Drove a block and got to a street they had at least made a pass with the plow. Got to work and had to help shovel the snow off all the lumber in the yard....what was I thinking?!! I literaly shoveled snow for 6 hours at work and went home only to find the plow had finally gone on our street and put a 3' pile of snow at the end of my driveway and down the sidewalk. Another 2 hours of snow blowing/shoveling and I was done. Finally! Now I'm just waiting for Monday and the next storm.

Training? I resorted to a couple of runs on the treadmill and got some time on the bike trainer. It was nice to get outside this morning for a run even though the roads are still snow/ice covered. Spring can't come soon enough!

Yes, I looked it up too -- awesome!  Back atcha, Melyssa!

Art, the snow sounds just miserable.  It's easy for me to say, but I keep telling my friends, shoveling=cross training!

I took my bike out today for my first real ride, at a local park that has a 2 mile spur leading into a 7 mile loop.  Well, sort of -- I was with the kids, so the first 2 miles was sloooooow.   At one point, though, I did a solo 7 miles on the loop, looking for one of our friends' kids, while she watched my boys.  It felt good to do that, and to do it on top of having a kick-butt spin class this morning.  I biked maybe 13 miles total (7 at speed) plus an hour spin class today.  I never could have done this three months ago!

I'm impressed by all the snow shovelling!  And great work on the cycling Dineen.

I'm feeling quite stupid this evening, as I have just injured my back again, and my next tri is in 6 days.  (Leaned down with straight legs, wearing heels, to pick up a heavy wriggling toddler - very dumb...)  It usually comes right in about a week, anyone got any ideas how to speed this up?  I usually don't bother with physios as I don't think it makes much difference and they cost too much, but given I want to be racing in less than a week maybe I should get some help.  Pretty sure it's a bulging disc with some nerve root irritation - i'm staying off any kind of analgesics for now as I've read that NSAIDs can inhibit healing... arrrgh SO annoyed at myself!!

I think I'll be able to run on it, but not at all sure how I'll handle the position on the bike..

Melyssa-Sorry to hear about your back. I only had one bout with a back problem and would prefer not to have another. I would definately go to a PT if you want to make it to that race next week. Good luck!

Yikes Meylssa

i know this is not what you might want to hear....but my vote is rest - you may miss this race, but your body will thank you

speaking from experience, there is no point in 'pushing through an injury' it only makes it worse in the long run

don't feel stupid....just take care of and listen to your body....

I officially started my 13 week original sprint plan today (was supposed to start it last week, but...). So today I did 23 min on the treadmill, walking and running (hip not hurting at all ), got 3 km. And after that I went to the pool and swam laps for 16 min (breast stroke) and did 550 m or 550 yards ( don't know if the pool is 25 yards or meters).
Felt a little shaky after that.
But now I've started and it feels good!

Glad you started a plan. I always work better with a plan for each workout. It helps me stay focused. Glad your hip isn't hurting either. :-)

I just found this link that lists water temps for triathlons in the U.S.

Super job starting on your plan!!! So glad your hip is fine. Also 550 is a considerable ways to go breaststroke--well done!

Is it bad that I am not following any specific tri training plan right now, but just making it up as I go along?  I am 12 weeks out from  my first sprint tri now (which I believe is 800m swim, 11 mile bike, 3.1 m run).  I mean, I do have a plan -- I've figured out how to fit in 2-3 swim sessions a week and am planning on building myself up to swimming 1600m without stopping, and I have a plan for running (adding distance to my Sunday long runs and my midweek runs at a measured pace to work toward building endurance; my goal is to be able to run 15K by April), and to build bike endurance (spin class 2x a week, plus hopefully adding outdoor rides soon).  I have a hazy idea that I will do an OWS at my IL's lake sometime in April, if not two, and fet some brics in March and April.   Is that enough?

Great job on your plan, Mia!  And Yanti, I am still all warm and glowy on the inspire you left for me (blush).  I can't believe how much I thrive on those things!

Has anyone ever ordered custom shirts for races?  I want to order a small batch (3) of shirts for me and the gals I am doing the race with.  We don't need Tri shirts -- I was thinking a performance/tech T-shirt that we can pull on over whatever we are wearing for the swim before we hop on the bike.  Us Athenas don't really enjoy the thought of every roll showing for the bike/run portion...

Actually Dineen most of that sounds fine. Where you want to be *really* careful is the run. Make sure you're not adding more than 10% in distance per week (and that is too much for some beginners; really gauge how you and your body parts feel), and that you're not also increasing intensity/speed at the same time. Some speeding up is normal as you get fit, but in general, keep the same FEELING or PERCEIVED EXERTION level.

In any case, the VAST majority of running should be done at a conversational effort.

Also make sure you're pulling back on distance every 3rd or at the most 4th week. Some running plans actually have a pull-back every other week.

Oh, and as far as bricks go ... short bricks are fine. They really are just confidence-builders and to get your body accustomed to the feeling of running right after a bike ride.

I almost never do "formal" bricks. I almost always run about 5 minutes after a bike ride.

Re: custom shirts -- My family did a relay tri a couple of years ago and we ordered shirts from zazzle.com. I uploaded my image on tech-type shirts and got them sent to us. They turned out fine. They weren't cheap, about $30 each since we were ordering a small amount. Also Cafepress.com allows you to make custom shirts.

Also, the last time I did some shirts I made the image on the computer and then copied them onto t-shirt transfer paper and just ironed them onto Target tees. But those weren't tech. The thing about doing tech shirts yourself is the heat process to transfer the image---an iron will just melt the fabric.

good luck.

Great work Dineen and Mia

I attended my first OWS event yesterday (I figured if my back could handle getting into the wetsuit, then the actual swim would be fine!).   My tri coach had said I should come along to this event to get some OWS practice, and it was a gorgeous warm summer evening (although in our water, still wetsuit compulsory) so I thought.. how bad can it be? hehe...
When I got there, I felt completely overwhelmed as the yacht club seemed overrun with incredibly fit proper triathletes, up to national representative level.. and here I was, just hoping I didn't have to get pulled out of the water by the boat!  I really really wanted to turn around and go home, but my coach was running the event and he was lending me his wetsuit..
Once I was in the water it was okay actually... when we started I realised, it's just swimming, just me and the water (and maybe a hundred kicking choppy splashy companions) and I CAN do this... just slowly.  I was only doing the shortest course of the day, 500m... which took me about 14 minutes, although i'm pretty sure I swam offcourse a lot, as I was struggling with my sighting.  It was still hard though, and I DID wonder what the hell I was doing there.  But when I got out of the water, someone clapped and said well done, and I felt mighty proud of myself for the rest of the evening   yep, still addicted to this crazy tri thing... I just really need to train more I guess.

Ohh.. and I just have to add, I was actually FIRST in my category.... (open women 500m).... that's because there were only two in my category!!! LOL all the proper swimmers swum the longer swims.  I'm in awe of those swimmers who can swim 1500m in the time it takes me to do 500m.  I really want to get better at this, is that possible do you think?

Enough rambling, hope that snowy winter is starting to recede

It would go something like this.... entered the water with fear and trepidation, tried not to drown, felt like I was probably coming last and only slightly quicker in the water than the marker buoys, couldn't see a thing and got lost several times, swallowed quite a lot of harbour, eventually found way back again, dragged myself ashore and decided that eating all that chocolate for extra buoyancy hadn't been a winning formula!!

On the plus side there were more good looking men in one place than I've seen in a long time!

Hehe, I'll have to do it again.
