Meulen - 2011-02-11 10:04 AM hahahahahahhahahaha ROTFLMAO!!!!!! People at work are wondering what I'm laughing at!! LOL OK, Erin you can use paddles and or web gloves swimming. That will give those tri's a workout.

i thought those were just to facilitate speed? i didn't think they were weighted??
they aren't weighted. Remember, water itself creates resistance. Putting paddles on is going to make your catch feel like you are lifting weights!

oooooh! maybe i'll change it up and get the paddles and switch back and forth. someone was telling me that they actually hinder you for triathlon training because (well, I can't remember exactly why). i'll try them...anything to help these triceps!!!!

Look at the Blue Seventy Fusion Wetsuit.  It is beginner priced with a lot of extras.  This is the suit I bought.  It is awesome.

Thanks, I will take a look at it.  Hopefully, I can find a local place that sells suits so I can try them on.  I would like to get a feel to see if I prefer a full suit with sleeves or a sleeveless.

How cold is going to be where you are going to swim?  I got the full sleaves because I am going to swim in a Lake that is going to be 50.  To me, that is just about cold enough to float an iceburg.  I am not looking forward to the cold swim.  If you get the right suit it isn't so bad with the sleaves.  Mine is really flexable around the shoulders and armpits.  It doesn't work for people with huge bulky arms so Libramom would probably have to go sleavless.

Let me know what you find.  I am just about ready to pull the trigger on a wetsuit myself.  I have myself convinced on the Xterra Vortec but still unsure and I will have to order online as there is nothing close within miles here in Western MD.  Hope everyone has had a productive weekend thus far!

1.  Completed my first ever road race today...a 10k on a trail course that was covered with snow and ice.  The website said "nice packed snow easy to run on."  It was not nice packed snow, there was ice all over the place, and I don't know how I made it out alive.  The fact that some people where going to run four loops for a marathon today astounds me.  Runners are crazy.

2.  I went into a bike shop today to get my first pair of bike shoes, a helmet, and some cleats.  The conversation went something like this:

Me: "Hi.  I am brand new to the world of bikes and I need to get some road bike shoes."
Girl: "Well what brand do you want."
Me: "I don't know, what do you suggest?"
Girl:  "Well do you need Delta cleats?"
Me: "No idea"
Girl:  "Do you want Specialized?"
Me: "No standard is fine."
Girl: "No the brand."
Me: "What brand?"
Girl: "Specialized."
Me: "No just regular."
Girl: "No the brand is called Specialized"

Etc etc etc...

But I did end up coming out of there with Specialized Elite road shoes, which she said was basic entry level shoe that would be good enough to hold up outside, a cheapish urban helmet (I'll get a better one in the summer), and cleats she swore would work in my class.  Woo-hoo!  A buddy is giving me a Cannondale his son doesn't need until June to ride until I can get a real bike, and then it's decision time...do I buy new or used?

Evening swim class...bring it!

Awesome Jon!!!! not that you didn't know the brand "Specialized" LOL , about your race. How'd you do?

What the heck is a delta cleat? Never heard that one before. Most spin classes have bikes that will accept either spd or look style cleats. Look style includes SPD-SL cleats.

that's good news on the cannondale. Although, now you're going to have to get a road bike for sure when your time with that is up. You're not going to want to give up the speed!!

Most of the wetsuits for tri's move pretty freely with the arms as long as you get the right size. Like Dale said.....the big factor is the water temp of the tri's you will be doing. I went with a full sleave suit because some of my tri's were early in the year, or in a lake that really doesn't warm up much. The one tri I've done in warm water they banned wetsuits for the day because it was too hot!! I ended up having to do my first Olympic tri san's wetsuit!! You should of heard all the upset people on the start. LOL I just sucked it up and did it. I'm glad I did too. Now I know I won't ever be one of those people that can't make it without a wetsuit and has to complain. I'm pretty sure if you did wear a wetsuit on that day you would have over heated and been dnf before you got out of the water anyway.

I started looking up the water temp for the river, and I am torn.  I may not need the suit for temperature reasons, but I would like that buoyancy advantage.  Half of the swim will be done upriver.  Well, I do have some time to think about this one...

Michael

I'll have to check to make sure of the exact degree but I believe USAT rules states that your results won't count if you wear a wetsuit if the water is above 82 and I think it's prohibited all together over 84. There are other options. TYR has their torque suit that I think is legal in all tri's and is a bouyant 1 piece suit that looks like a tri suit, shorts and short sleeves. You wear your trisuit or shorts under it and peel it off in transition. If you're going to do any more tri's that might be in cold water and budget is a concern you may want to deal with sleeves in a warm tri so you have the sleeves when you do a cold one.

mcommend - 2011-02-10 7:13 PMAnyone have any good suggestions for decent affordable wetsuit?  Has anyone tried the $100 Xterra?  I will be looking for one once we hit spring.  Then I have to find a good place to practice open water swimming.
I can't comment on where to find an affordable wetsuit. I am in a position where I need to get an affordable one too. I'll be doing the Chicago Tri this year and Lake Michigan can be cold. The only thing I can say is once you get one practice in a pool first before swimming in open water with it. Last year, days before my first Chicago Tri, I borrowed a wetsuit from a friend and felt stupid putting it on swimming in the gym pool. Thank god I did it. I freaked out with it on and couldn't swim without hyperventilating. The furthest I was able to go was 50 meters. I was happy it didn't happen in open water. I had plenty of experience swimming but never with a wetsuit. I got lucky Lake Michigan was wamer than normal last year.. Give yourself plenty of time to practice with it before the first event when you will need it. Good luck finding one.

The Pgh Tri club has open water swim practices in the rivers. I bet Chicago does too, right? That way you don't have to ruin your wetsuit by exposing it to chlorine.

I don't think I've seen one picture of a person in the Pgh tri without a wetsuit. And, you know, the river will always be cold (even in August!).

There's a spot you can always swim at Ohio street beach. It's marked off with bouy's at 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile down the shore line. It's kind of nice, but we need to worry about water quality. The Lakefront there suffers from pollution pretty bad. They close it sometimes for high ecoli levels. I'd rather not get sick. But we have a friend close by that lives on a lake we can go to. And yes, don't swim with the wetsuits very often. Chlorine is pretty rough on it. If you have to it's not bad once in a long while, but don't do it all the time for sure.

FYI, Anne's problem is not very common but it does happen. I'm not sure if the wetsuit she had was too tight or it's just all those years of swimming without it for her and then the abrupt moment she had a little constriction. I swam for the first time in Open water with mine and got used to it very quickly, but there is a little bit of getting use to involved. Definitely try it out before your races if you can. That's good advice Anne!

I hear you! Our rivers are disgusting and black. Michael once found a dead body in the river as he was teaching on the voyager (a boat for students to take fields trips on and learn about science). I'm not kidding you. How would you like to swim up against a dead body in black water?

LOL hahahhaha!!

We can't even swim in our rivers or canals. Nobody could survive that! This is Chicago, it's so common, very few bodies in the river or canal even make the news anymore!! LOL

Thanks for the advice.  Right now I feel like this is the biggest obstacle in my training - getting open water/wetsuit practice.  It's so much more convenient to swim in the pool, but I know that I have to practice this alot.  It will be so much different with the wetsuit, choppy water, no visibility, etc....
