He watches it so I can squeeze in a morning workout. We're also potty training him right now, and he'll sit for longer times if it is on. He likes Handy Manny & Olivia, too. My 5 year old has moved on to Spongebob and Phineas & Ferb. I swore I wouldn't allow Spongebob in my house. I've learned never to say never Luckily he's in kindergarten, and he only watches 20-30 minutes of tv a day. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED So, my two boys, 6 & 3, start their swim lessons this saturday at 9:30 am. The pool opens 7:30-8:30 am for adult lap swim. I've never swam laps in a pool before, nevermind the fact there will be other experienced swimmers. I realize I need to share lanes, which I am fine with, but I think I am unprepared. I can swim, but I doubt with the proper form, nor endurance. I just have regular swim shorts and NO goggles. I am traveling for work tomorrow (driving), I am wondering if I can find something at Dick's this time of year. I'll be in the Manchester/Hartford/Glastonbury area if anyone has some ideas where to find some shorts. Any other pool tips?????? I hope I don't embarass myself. Very curious how many laps I can do without stopping. I think my cardio is good enough, just not sure how the "swimming for an extended period of time" will go. I also don't know how to measure my time. I don't think my Garmin 305 is made for the pool. |

I actually didn't buy goggles until 2 weeks prior to my first race. It's doable. Let's see on tips. Get in and swim. If someone asks to share just stay to your side of the lane line on the bottom of the pool. There is a surprising amount of room in a lane. After a few passes you won't even worry about it. As far as time there is usually a clock with a second hand in the natatorium. Mentally note when you started and when you stopped. Simple math then. |

As far as time there is usually a clock with a second hand in the natatorium. Mentally note when you started and when you stopped. Simple math then. Use of the word natatorium was hot. A few additional thoughts: Watch the people swimming beofre you pick a lane and try to pick a lane with someone of comperable ability. When you get in a lane with someone wait to let them know you're there then ask them if they want to split the lane or circle swim (you'll have to circle swim if there are three or more people in the lane, but you'll have a choice if there are only two). I wold recommend goggles. Public pools over-chlorinate to no end and you go without your eyes will be burning. There's a Dicks in Manchester that should have decent goggles. Personally I love BlueSeventy goggles (which need to be ordered on-line). Don't worry about how far or how fast you can swim. There are always tons of beginners and at my gym thte strange guy who like to do shoulder presses and bicep curls in the hot tub. |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED I second using goggles. I've had great luck with the Speedo Vanquisher 2.0 goggles after trying some crappy Nike ones that didn't seal very well. I'm sure you can find SOMETHING even in the winter at Dick's or another sporting goods store. |

Having done my very first half and never before run more than 5 miles before training please learn from my mistakes ----- - Follow a novice schedule (Hal Higdon's is a good choice) - don't assume your body can do more, just get the training in - Make sure to do strength training and be consistent about it - this will make your body stronger and more able to handle the training you will put it through, it will also help you avoid injury - If you start to get any injuries (knees, shin splints, etc) do a little aqua jogging to give you body time to heal - If you don't already FOAM ROLL, FOAM ROLL, FOAM ROLL (IT band is KEY) Good luck!!! |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Kids Cartoons HATE Max & Ruby. Max has serious psychiatric issues and Ruby is and OCD freak. Wow Wow Wubzy is up there. My 2 year old loves Ni ho Kai Lan, which at least teaches a little chineese, although they are all a bunch of sissies. Fortunately, both kids like Spongebob. I think we may have to have a Star Wars intoroduction this weekend. The Pool for Beginners I swim at the New Haven JCC, so I am also the youngest swimmer by about 80 years, but we have baloon butt guy, the water walkers you insist on using the lanes and a bunch of flailers. The moral: you will be fine. Wear goggles, i could not imagine swimming without them. you will likely have to either split lanes (no problem) or circle swim so watch some You Tube on circle swimming. (I had to do that yesterday with a guy doing breats stroke and another who kept veering off course and stopping int eh middle of the lane) Start slow and build up. If you are not a proficient swimmer already look into Total Immersion, I am a HUGE advocate of it, did the drills and went from yacking in the gutter to 1 mile in about 3 weeks. 4 years later I am a pretty decent swimmer for a football player Remember to breathe when you head is above the water. Again, take it slow, short sets, no more than 25s or 50s to start with, lots of drilling, limit you WOs to 20-30 minutes max so you can just get comfortable. swimming is not natural. Also rememebr that the harder you push the water pushed back that force cubed! thus the key to swimmign is form and slipping through the water, not brute strength. Search for thread from rstocks (Bob Stocks). He is one of the best swimmers on BT (beats the pros) and has great swim advice. His mantra is "relaxed power", in other words tensing just slows you down. Kelly will have great advice on this topic - she was a college swimmer so listen to her! Have fun!. Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Swim question: So was wondering for those of you that have ramped up volumes at some point or really pushed yourself (swimming for example). Have you found at some point that you body just throws up your hands and says no more? For example, I could only do 1500 the other night, but today I felt awesome, but prior, I was doing 3000 or more 2-3 times per week. Was it that I peaked last week sometime when things were still going well and I just needed to lay off and rest? |

My last half aquabike was Sept. 4 and didn't get back on the bike (very light miles in November and tried to ramp in December and since). My legs just are not liking the bike yet, they always feel like it is so much work, it is so hard, yet my HR is consistently 130's-140's (obviously w/ intervals jumping to 150-160). I feel like if I did the same time trail I use for a gage I would be grossly off by many, many minutes (maybe I should test anyhow, but I just never seem to feel fresh on the bike). Running on the other hand feels great. |

I'm going back to the pool this morning since my groin/piriformis still hurts. The gym I belong to has a 4 lane pool.....no deep water. I really miss running, and I would like an alternative that would keep up the fitness a bit. Two ways to pool run -- one (deep water) is to put on a bubble and run in the deep water without moving (your legs move but not your body kind of like running in place), the other is to run with your feet hitting the pool bottom (you run up and down the lanes). Either method is incredibly effective at maintaining run fitness. While pool running, execute the workouts just as you would have if you were real running except note that pool HR zones are typically about 10% lower than on-land run zones. This is due to the venous return you get from the water pressure in the pool (like wearing a giant compression sock). Your body just doesn’t have to beat as much to move around the same amount of blood. |

Running on the other hand feels great. As an initial thought its tough to compare biking outside to riding on a trainer. Biking outside is generally much easier and your HR is going to be higher on the trainer because there is no coasting, no stops, no downhills, you have to work for everything. I think your focus on the trainer should be higher volume / lower intensity (right now all of my trainer rides are aerobic --- my HR doesn't go above 140) , which will help you maintain fitness and you can worry about testing once you get back outside. |
