D001 - 2011-02-14 6:23 PM How long does the flu last? 'Cause I still feel 'not-so-good.' *sigh* I'd like to do a light workout, but I'm hacking like a three-pack-a-day smoker. Plus, I'm exhausted just getting through the regular work-day. Bleh. And yes, I did get a flu shot! *sigh again* Oh well. This too shall pass.

Just relax and wait. Pushing through phlemy lungs will only make you worse. Sorry for the news! On the flip side your tri mentor just told you to play video games and watch tv for the next week or so.
Ooooo. Video games and TV. My body AND brain are about to turn into oatmeal. Cool. LOLI got home from work and took a nap. Ate dinner, and you guessed it -- I'm ready for another nap.I got my sugar fix today by consuming about 3000 cough drops, too.
I hope you turn the corner and start feeling better real soon. The sugar fix thing really sucks! Haha!

Yay! That's awesome!! And I'm right there with you...did my first ever yesterday. Bike for 20 minutes, walk for 10, run for 15, walk for 5, then stretch. This was my first time on a bike since Sept. and like you, I kind of faltered about midway. I had told myself initially it was for minimum of 10 minutes then I could quit, but I ended up going ahead and finishing the 20.

I also seem to have less heel pain than I expected when running. In my case, I think I may put more heel strike pressure in my walk than in my run - it's more fore/midfoot based. ??

Have fun with your busy weekend!!
Great job! That's your longest run, yes? I keep thinking I should watch the chi running video that Brian has, but haven't done it yet.
Yep, that was my longest run interval to that date. Yesterday did a 20 minute, but no biking beforehand. I'm not familiar with the Chi running video. If you watch it, let me know how it is....

We're now at the half way mark in the mentor program!

How do you feel you've progressed since the beginning of January? I bet everyone here can list at least one accomplishment.

What challenges are you currently facing in your training?

Everyone has successes and faces challenges, so I will warm us up!

A major point of progress for me was realizing that I am ready to move from breathing every 3 strokes during front crawl to breathing every 5. Several months into training when I started last May my big accomplishment was learning to bilateral breathe.

My current challenge is part of the above realization, I need to take that and make it my regular stroke. I can do it for 100m but I need to practice and play around with the pace of my strokes and effort to go further successfully. (It's CO2 build up that makes you panic for air  - so make sure you're breathing out completely before taking breaths.)

Most of my goals are long term but I feel the most important was working through the knee pain and tendentious I had last year. My goal of weight loss was started and set aside but I'm motivated. After flu recovery I will refocus. Pre program strength training and stretching with yoga has made a difference in my exercise program this year.  With training in Alaska I still have 2 months before the majority of my training will be outside. Though dealing with illness and work conflicts I feel confident I'm building a good base for the season. With immersion swimming and running form work I'm seeing improvements in those two disciplines.

No swim yesterday due to some work issues for my husband. We were heading to the gym and he got a call that looked like he was going to have to go in and cover for someone else. Didn't end up being that way, but by the time it was sorted out, it was time to pick up my little guy from preschool. Actually missed it and was bummed last night.

Lesson today - worked on one arm drills and moving from 2 stroke to 4 stroke breathing with paddles/pull buoys. Good talk about anxiety, swimming, etc.

Hm. Accomplishments..... OK, I have one:

I survived the flu.

LOL - I really think that's about it.

As for challenges --> I'm still hacking my lungs out. And yes, I did have a flu shot last Fall, but....

I have some exciting news!  My son and his three partners (freshman and sophomores in high school) set up the Teen Driving Safety 5k which was Saturday, February 12.  Not only did they have a great turnout of 247 registered runners, but they also had several speakers and best of all:  netted $2500 to donate to teen driving safety organizations!

I am such a proud mom!  And I also got my 5k in

Half way mark...wow time flies!

Accomplishments:  I am enjoying the exercise endorphins again.  My hip is no longer sore after walking/jogging 2-3 miles.

Challenges:  I am  really bad at logging my workouts online.  I have every workout calendared so when I do it, I smile and cross it off my calendar.

Still working on the old lady upper arms that keep waving long after my hand has stopped......

Too chicken to get in the pool yet.  I read the swim comments very carefully and they have been very helpful! I will start swimming soon...I will start swimming soon...I will start swimming soon....

My goal was to start adding in the other disciplines, since I've been so focused on the swimming. I've done that somewhat, but need to start amping it up now.

Swam today. Blech. Kids are out of school tomorrow and Monday - may go to the Y and just play around in the pool tomorrow. Going to try being more positive next week and approach the swimming with a better attitude. 100's are going marginally okay, now I want to start ramping up to swimming 200's consistently.

In the words of Nike: "Just Do It."

What if you go without expectations? Just get in the pool and play in the water. Spend 15 minutes doing "whatever" while staying within your comfort level.... (Ie, the goal isn't to swim sprints until you puke! It's just to get used to being in the water.)

Just how worried about the pool are you?

Just like Dee mentioned, just hop in. Get in the pool and play for a few sessions like you might when training was a non-issue. Do dog paddle, splash, float, use pool toys. Just focus on making a habit of getting into the pool, then think about adding some lane swimming to it.

This weekend I'm going to a comedy club, indoor climbing, a bit of training, and spending time with my husband. We have a long weekend in Ontario - Monday off! It's a recent holiday called family day that they just added a few years ago and they're already talking about removing.

How about you?

I think I'm finally back on track for training. Basking in 10°F/-12°C. I think we've seen our last -40°F in Fairbanks. I work Saturday but plan to ski on Sunday.

It is mainly breathing issues.   But I took your "just do it" advice and signed up for swim coaching.
