harberc - 2011-02-24 6:45 AM Morning ya'll!  I just found out that my April race (first tri ever) has a couple of significant hills on the bike portion.  I have not trained much outside this year in the tundra of Ohio and I'm not really sure what I can do on the stationary bike to get me ready.  I do random hills on it, but is that going to be enough for me to not embarass myself come race day?

I wouldn't sweat it...  They are not going to put anything on the course that is rediculous, IMO...  I'm SURE you can handle anything they throw at ya...

If you feel like you have to do SOMETHING... maybe do a workout once a week of what I call "long hill" intervals"... something like 6 x 5min at a high resistance with 3min active recoveries between...  Something hard enough that you need to stand or slow your cadence down.  Helps with leg strength and get's the HR up there.

Remember, you have lots of gears on that bike!  I'm sure you will have a couple that will allow you to climb just about anything within reason.  I wouldn't lose too much sleep.  I'm sure you're fine for you first one.

We are getting down tot he end of Feb. How did everyone do on there goals? I think I am going to lack some on the bike!

Also it appears some of our group got busy and faded away, so let's keep this page going.

I am looking at a small 5k in March and a 8 mile trail run in April (maybe a dash n splash witht the wife) and then my first tri of the season in May!

I'm always busy, but just kick me in the pants via an inspire and I will come back and play.

I don't know where I'm at for my goals, I should check that out.  I think I did ok, but will probably be a bit short on the swim.

I still feel like this month has been really solid.

Three major goals for me next month: continued weight loss, continue to build up the mileage, and to really manage my time better as I get into longer sessions.  I'm struggling just a little bit with balancing work and life right now, and I know it's not going to get any easier as the sessions get longer.  My recovery week this month turned into a week of lazy because I felt bad that husband was so neglected... must improve that to be successful this seaosn.

More snow forced an indoor run this morning.  still got in 5.3 mile in 45 minutes.

Looking to do first road race of season next sat.  A 15k on the town park trail system.  I would love to go for speed and pr of that race, but last year I was only running - so I was doing much more speed work.  I will go out and enjoy the Spring Fling.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks all!  I figured I'd be OK with the hills, just wasn't sure what to expect.  A trainer may be in my future but not this year, just not economically feasible right now.  I'm going to do some of the interval hill training Kido...thanks for the info.

My Feb gols are on track except for the bike.  I think I over shot the math a bit but I'm going to come in at around 100mi instead of 110mi.  After Sat., my run will be right on track and I met the swim goal of 3.2mi a week ago.

I must say, I went from "I hope I can do this", "I hope I don't embarass myself", "I hope I don't die" back in December to "I know I can do this, and can't wait for the race" current day.  I have this group to thank for that!  I never thought I would be this hooked on the lifestyle.

Just wait to you get to the week of the race - you will be bouncing off the walls.  Just make sure that you share all of that great nervous energy with us.

I'm glad I hulked up and raised my goals mid-month.  I should be right there come February 28th.

I'm still not looking forward to 2 hours on the trainer tomorrow morning.  Anybody got a good movie suggestion I should cue up from Netflix?
?
?

I just saw The Last Legion while running on the dreadmill at my gym.  Made the run almost nice.  If you like Romam flicks that deal with Caesar, it's worth a couple of hours.

I fought and won that battle over X-Mas and am the proud owner of a new Cervelo P3.  The tipping point was that I got paid out a bunch of unused vacation and was able to argue that I earned the bike by working so hard that I had to forego vacation.  Now I just need an argument as to why I deserve race wheels.

What did you have your eye on?

I am the biggest freaking klutz on the planet.

I twisted my ankle and faceplanted in the parking lot of one of my clients today.

Thank god I don't think anything is broken, but I'm a little swollen and sore, missing skin on my palms, and a big chunk of my ego.

Grrr, running is out for a day or two methinks.

So I am still alive. Sorry I haven't been on BT at all. I was hired to do all the post production sound and video for this independent feature film. It was accepted to the Pan-African film festival in Los Angeles. and after getting less than 2 hours of sleep a night for 3 weeks strait working on this film, it won "audience choice" at the festival. Now that the festival is over. I should be able to resume a more normal schedule. However we are very close to getting a national distribution deal that will include a 400 theater nation wide release as well as DVD and Blu-Ray distribution. I am very excited, seeing as how this is my first major independent feature.

Specialized bike. My buddy owns a bike shop and is trying to hook me up with a great deal, but the wife is sputtering on it. Like I said, it is not over yet...

Which Model? 2010 Iron Man was won on a Specialized S-Works Tarmac.
I have the Allez. Love it. Going to swap out everything with SRAM Red and a good wheel set.  I purchased it for 699. Add about 1600 for components and I'll have pretty much the same bike for about 1/3 the cost

53 degree weather helped get me to the monthly goal.  I was set to be short on the bike by 5 or 6 miles.  But due to warm weather some friends and I went out for a nice ride to end the week.  I hit all 3 goal distances.  182 miles bike, 9.85 swim, 67 run.

Also - today was my first ride outside using aero bars and bike shoes in clips.  I was nervous about falling down while trying to get out of the pedals.  Of course I had to fall once - but there was an outside force.  While standing next to my wife, clipped in and ready to go, my friend grabs my back wheel.  I had no way of unclipping in time and hit the deck.  Oh how my wife laughed!!  The rest of the ride was fine.
If only I could have  few days in a row of this weather, but cold and rain are heading into Indy for the rest of the week.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

If it makes you feel better I fall at least once a month (usually more) when trying to unclip at stop signs, etc.  I'm the clumsiest person on the planet.

I was just sizing up my goals vs actuals and was really surprised to see that I'm going to be darn close to ALL of my goals for Feb.  I will miss the bike and run numbers by just a few miles each, and I'm really happy with that.

Truthfully, when I set those goals I thought that if I even came close I would reward myself with a night of binge drinking.

So I'm pleased.  I will post final numbers tomorrow, but I will expect high fives all around.

Now to set next months...

Great job to those that met or beat their goals. I am going to be short on my bike goals, but I still have a trainer ride tonight, so we'll see.

I am more excited that daylights savings time is coming on Mar 13th, so we will have more daylight, which it makes it easier for me to get up in the morning!

My bike goal is for crap.  Unfortunatley, my run was crap last week as well due to sore achilles' and a wicked sore ankle.  My duathlon this coming weekend should be interesting.

NOW FOR THE QUESTION: Anybody training with power?  I bought a cheap Kurt Kinetic power computer to use on the trainer.  I'm going to use mainly Spinnerval DVD's for my trainer rides. So, I'm trying to figure out my zones.  As best I can tell, I can do the 20 minute test and plug my average watts into a calculator referenced on the Spinervals webpage.  They suggest using one of their DVD's (that I already have) for the 20 minute test.  It puts you through a few intervals before you start the test to tire you out a bit.  Does this sound somewhat correct?

My month will be over today.  Here is where it shakes out:

Swim Goal was 3.2mi / Actual will be 4.68mi after tonight
Run goal was 30mi / Actual will be 33.3mi or so after tonight
Bike goal was 110mi / Actual is 100mi (I missed one 15mi bike day due to a sick kid)

All in all, I am pleased with my progress.  The most important number in my mind is the weight.

Dec 1st 2010:    234lbs
Feb 28th 2011:  214lbs

I can't believe my body is responding in the manner it is.  It's been a great surprise to me and I am as motivated as ever to keep it going!  Still hoping to be around 205lbs come race time           (4/2/2011) so there is still work to do!
