chmoore2 - 2011-04-25 7:41 AM KC - I Love my 305 and it can be had for about 125 on Amazon.  Great Value right now IMO.

We have a 305, as well.  Great option for not too much money (still pricey though!).  I think we also ordered ours of Amazon.

Fail this morning...didn't get up to run and just slept until 6:30.  Will have to get the run in later today.

good morning everyone.  i ahve been busy with life and have not had time to check in.  i hope everyone is doing well.

as far as training...i have been feeling real sluggish for about 10 days.  i have not been able to keep up on long bike rides when a month ago i could.  when we come to a hill i just blow-up.  i also notinced walking up stairs was burning my quads.  i started thinking "i cant walk up stairs without my quads hurting how in the world am i going to swim/bike/run for 6+ hours".  i took some time off last week so i hope to feel better this week.

have a great day.

On a side note does anyone use the Garmin Virtual Partner feature?  I have had my Garmin 405 for over 2 years and never used it and did today and am mad that I never did before.  I set it for my 9:00/ mile pace and it kept me right on pace for the whole run.  Finished 8 miles at exactly 9:00/mile pace.  For my marathon on saturday it will be like having my own private pace group leader -haha.

That is a great training tool, I love kicking that little stick guys butt..lol   Good luck Sat!

Mary: Nice brick workout, how did your legs feel after a fast bike?  Sleeping in isn't a bad thing, Hope you can make it up tonight!

KC: depending on what features you need I have a 305 & 405.  If you don't need the cutting edge things the older 305 can be found for about 100 and they work great.  The new 310 xt (forget name) has a longer batter life (good for IM's) and can do power data.  But if your using it to run and bike only I love it.  I also have the Timex gps watch and would not recommend it as the gps tracking is very new compared to garmin.

Scott: nice job, all the hard work is paying off!!  What is your new lt number?   I wish you would quit reminding us your 59, your going to kick my butt as it is so quit rubbing it in.  LOL    Nice job!!!

Jason: It sounds like you were just over training.  Hope the rest helps.   It is a real shock to the body to add a ton of volume, when I'm in full training mode you always feel alittle tired no matter what.  Hang in there and don't worry about the race just put in the time and you will be fine.

Karen you are so lucky, I have a college pool like that about 1hr away that I swim sometimes and its so nice.  Scott once you swim in one you would be spoiled and never want a normal 25yr pool.

Hey Karen I almost have beach front property problem is its due to a overflowing river (30 degrees too)

OH, no, hope all is OK.

Ok. this is probably a dumb questions. so please dont make fun.

Is Yards the same as Meters in swimming? I noticed that when I entered my swim yesterday thru my phone I selected meters but its showing yards in my log. I changed it 3 times and it still shows as yards. So im just wondering if they're the same.

I normally lose track of how much I swim because Im trying to focus on my technique but yesterday I made sure too and I think I finally figured out sighting. THANK YOU

A meter is about 1.094 yards.  39.37 inches.   Pools are either yards or meters.

Check with the pool.  My YMCA pool is 25 yards wide, but 50 meters long.  I like to get there when they have it on the long course.  Less turning which I am not good at. -Karen

Never heard of that but what a terrific idea!  Best of both worlds.

Is that unusual? SInce I am not a swimmer, I don't know.  I had to ask the life guard what the lengths were, so I hope he is correct. Otherwise I am a lot faster, Or slower that I thought.

A big thank you to the group!!

After doing my first 2 laps this morning I knew it was time to go home and swim another day.  Thinking of telling you guys that I could not swim, breath or stop drinking water made me slow down, take a few seconds at the wall, and start over.  It took close to 20 minutes to warm up and finish my drills before I could start on the main set.  Once I did I was OK, but still not great.  Did get in the entire main set of 4*200 (3:42 avg), 6*100 (1:42 avg) then 3*50 (:48 avg)  Kept thinking "can't stop.  What would KC and the group say?"

Time to get in a good run to help me forget about that tough swim.

I never kick that SOB's butt.  I probably need to slow him down.

Actually I like the 310XT. It seems large but really I don't feel it.  The waterproofing is what made me spend the added cash.  I won't wear it in the water.  I had an incident recently where the wrist band came detached from the face on one side and it fell off. Imagine that happening in open water...bye bye.  But it is nice not having to worry about it in rain.

And don't worry about me kicking your butt on the bike.  You'll see me on the run. Say hi as you go speeding by.

jend702 - 2011-04-24 7:20 AM First OWS today. I'm disappointed and will try again Monday after work. I did complete 800m but I think it took a little over 1hr. Very slow getting in and getting started. Cut off for the swim in my race next Saturday is 45min.Sucks
OMG! They have cut off?  I'm doomed.  Was there a current?  I have not done an OWS yet, and my second race in June is in the ocean.  I'm concerned with the current.  Ideas?  How did you cope?

Coach:  As far as the brick, legs felt great on the run, avg 9:15/mi, plus it's very hilly.  Now I wasn't too excited about the idea of having to run 4 more miles after that...That's what race-day adrenaline is for...right?  right?!  Still have a ways to go.  Will make up the run tonight.

Brian: nice run and way to get that horsepower up!!!  too bad you don't live by Tim he is in a band that plays most weekends.

Court were just happy to see your back training.  What is your toe issue? Hope its nothing too major.

Charlie there are pro's and con's to adding areo bars to a road bike.  I have a roadie with them but the problem is you still never get the right tri geometry (ie more forward).  As Scott says bike speed is all about comfort, you can be super areo but if you sit up to stretch your back out every 10 mins you loose everything.

The toe, middle toe on the right foot, is really sore to the point that I limp for a few steps when I first start walking after sitting down.  Then the pain goes away and I have no other problems.  Doesn't even bother me when I run or bike.  I just take it as training pain.  Thanks for asking.

Finally got a run in today after 1 week of being sick.  I was feeling better on friday but decided to lay off working out since I had a show Friday night and knew it was gonna be a late night.  Did the same on Saturday as I felt almost 100% back to normal today.  Did 8 mile run at race pace 9:00/mile.  HR was little higher than I would have liked to see but I got in my groove around mile 6-7 so hopefully I didn't lose too much last week.

So glad to hear you are almost over the flu!  I have  Garmin 305, never used the virtual partner.  What dose it do?  Beep at you if you go under/over pace? Also -the Garmin 305 says it can be in water for 30 min.  But I have never tried it, don't want to chance that.

I am still mad at myself from last years Shamrock Shuffle as at about 3 miles in I looked down and saw a 310 face sitting on the ground.  By the time I processed what it was and thought about picking it up I realized I would have casued a major pile up with the herd of cattle behind me.  Is it hard to tell if that is coming off becasue I know that if my $300+ watch fell off even during the running of the bulls I am gonna pick it up.

The virtual partner will just tell you how far or behind you are with your pace.  But it tracks it for the whole workout so for example - on saturday when I set it for 9:00/mile and I do the first one in 8:57 it will show " You are :03 ahead" but if the next mile I do 9:05 it will show "You are :02 Behind".  It is constantly updating so it gives you real time info on where you are at with your pace.  It is a great tool.

On Saturday for every mile I run at 9:00/pace I am putting :09 in the bank (assuming a 4 hour marathon is 9:09 pace).  So approximatley every 6 miles I will have about 1 minute extra fade time.  My plan is to get to 18 miles at 9:00/pace with 3 minutes saved up then evaluate from there.  The Virtual Partner watch will help me determine where I need to be without much calculation.  I just have to figure how much time I have put in the bank up to that point and not let that watch show "You are BEHIND by 3:00" If it gets over that then I am in trouble.

Jason - you will be fine.  You've put the training in and done a great job.  Like Dave said you probably just overtrained a littel bit.  Just make sure you are eating right to re-fuel, back off the workouts a bit and get ready for the race.  You are gonna do great.  When do you start your taper?

Had a real good run last night also. Again, 4 miles without stopping. I think I may be getting the hang of this. Question: should I be increasing my distance/endurance, or should I be trying to increase my pace?  Ideally, both.  But if I had to focus on one thing, what would you recommend?

Training over the weekend is always tough with the little kiddies, especially this weekend with Easter get-togethers.  Sounds like most of you got good training in over the weekend.

Coach, you had PM'ed me about my blog entry. I figured I'd just let everyone know. 20 years after first signing up to be on the registry, I was identified to be a match for bone marrow donation. The patient is a 63-yr-old male who has leukemia. That's all I know about the patient. So I took one day last week to go through a whole day's worth of testing at the hospital to make sure I'm healthy enough to donate. I passed, and my donation date is 5/12, 3 days before my first sprint. I asked the doctor if I should be healthy enough to race, he indicated that I should be fine. So as we get closer to donation date, I'll probably be taking it easier on the training. It's all good.  If you're not registered yet, please consider signing up to be on the registry.  www.marrow.org
