brenyer - 2012-02-28 4:15 PM Almost forgot, I set another personal best on my 500yd swim time..... 6:22.  I couldn't believe it when my coach told me! I'm almost back to my high school times!

Awesome! I need to get technique lessons from you. I'm probably "at least" a couple of minutes slower than that.

I know right!?  Share some pointers on your technique pppaaaaleeeese?

LOL, 30 years of swimming probably has something to do with it   For me, being in the water is like a second home.  I haven't really thought of my technique in years it just comes very natural to me, kinda of like Steven and his running.  I guess the best advice I could give anyone wanting to improve their swim times and technique is to get involved with a USA Master's swim club and do whatever it takes to get to the pool at least 3 times per week.  Give it time and you'll see your times drop and your distances increase.  Don't get intimidated by the faster swimmers and quit because you'll be there in time.

Ah, back in the pool after a week off. The good thing about not having much technique is that I don't have much to loose! 900 yards last night and a three mile run this morning.

I had just a terrible day yesterday.  I swam 26 laps concentrating on form and not worrying about anything else.  I finished about 12:15 p.m. and went into the locker room to shower and change clothes and I discovered that someone had stolen my pants (along with my cell phone, wallet, keys, swim bag, etc.).  The little bugger left me with socks, shoes, underwear and a shirt.  None of that felt very helpful in light of the fact that I had no pants!  Someone took me to my house to get a change of clothes.  When I returned I searched forever and found nothing.  Then I got on the internet and did a "find my iphone" search and it said that it was still in the building.  So I remotely locked it and then started it beeping.  After a short search we found everything but the wallet.  Not a happy camper.  Compete day wasted.

Ken, So sorry that happened to you. It sucks when you can't trust people in the gym, but at least you got back the majority of your things. So, on the bright side how was your form?

Steven.davis - 2012-03-05 7:08 AM Ran the Little Rock Marathon yesterday. Finished in 4:31, way slower than I'd hoped. Course was hilly, 30 degree temp change from start to finish, most of my training was on a treadmill because of travel, words, words, words. BUT I FINISHED!

Steven, Congratulations on the finish! You did more than those that didn't toe the line. Way to go!

SportzVision - 2012-03-04 11:12 PM Got in a 25 mile easy ride today and followed up with a 1350 yard swim.  Still so friggin' slow!  Tomorrow is an hour long run on the treadmill.

Keep putting in the work and the speed will come with time. Increase the endurance and the technique and you will get better in all three sports.

Okay, So I was traveling again this week on a Monday and I let another Q&A Monday slip by.

Let's see if we can get any discussion about: training plans vs. winging it. Pros vs. cons? Do you follow a plan? Do you think it's better to go by feel? If you are a planner, do you do it yourself, get a coach, use a book or magazine plan? Do you have an annual plan or just a plan based on one "A" race? How do you measure yourself to see if you are getting better?

The wind doesn't want to let up here in Sacramento.  Had a big swim workout today, 5300yds. Very tired towards the end of the swim but feeling pretty good now.  My arms felt like bricks halfway through but I kept at it and didn't quit.  It reminded me of when I'm running and I feel like quitting but don't then I'm so glad once I'm done that I didn't stop.

Has anyone seen the ESPN story about the guy with no arms and no legs (no this is not a joke) that climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro? He put chains, like you use for snow with tires, on the nubs that he has. It was very inspirational. My new thing is when I feel like I can't go any more I just say "Kilimanjaro!"

Here is a link to one story but if you do a search there are several on him

Interesting question, because I'm right in the middle of that.  I initially downloaded an Olympic distance plan from BT.  The more I read from Joe Freil's book, the more I felt like I should put my own together, so I've been plowing through that process.  I am a planner... I've got to have something written down, but I like knowing what went into it and why, not just that it came out of a book.

I also downloaded several plans and then once I started, I realized I was already ahead of where the plans wanted me to be on the bike (since that was what I had been doing for 8 months).  So then I downloaded a plan that emphasized swimming.  I started with that plan and I then I started feeling better and better.  So I started deviating from the plan and adding more.  Instead of swimming three days a week, I am swimming 4 days a week.  Then I added some weight training and it seems I am always planning my next work out.

My problem is that I am just too competitive.  I do not want to just finish, I want to do well too.  I am trying to reign in that part of myself.  I do not want to get an injury.  On Monday night of this week, I swam a mile during lunch and ran six miles that night.  I thought I was doing okay when my legs got so tight I could hardly walk the rest of the night.  I was thinking that I had to add a 24 mile bike ride to this?  But my triathlon is on June 3rd.

I usually have some muscle that is sore all week except on Wednesdays which is my day off.

Right now I am ahead of schedule and trying to slow down a little.

Back to the pool this morning.  Trying to focus on technique... which should be easy, since I don't have much to focus on!  Good 1K yard workout, though, and enjoying swimming; something I never thought I could say.

So I went to the Dr. yesterday and nothing good came out of that appt.  I have some class of infection, both my Blood sugar and pressure were up and I feel yucky...always exhausted. I am only slightly concerned with the BP because I had just come from swimming and running two flights of stairs.

My diet has not changed, oh and I weighed a pound more which is really bothering me because I have really been watching what I eat. But on the other hand I could tell I had not lost any weight.

We went over everything and cannot figure out what is going on with me.  So now I have to monitor every little thing and how I feel and what I am doing.  I just want to feel good.

However the night did end on a good note.  After my run I went to the college where my husband works, and where I previously worked and saw a professor/friend I had not seen in about 10 months.  As soon as he saw me he said, "Oh My Gwad! You look great...you look like you have the body of a 28 year old!"  Ok he may inhale a lot of chemicals since he is the Chem prof but whatever I needed that!n Guess I will train again tonight....on the bike for an hour and 15.

I hope you feel better soon and figure out what is causing your problems. I hate not knowing. Just tell me what is going on and then I can deal with it. Congrats on the compliment from the Chem professor. Over the last week, I have seen alot of people I haven't seen in six months or so and they all are amazed at the transformation. It is almost embarrassing! It will be nice to not get the comments when this is the new "norm" for me.

Everyone seems on their way to increasing workouts and a good year.

I keep hearing (on a triathlon DVD) and seeing online how the run is the most important part of the tri. The key is pacing yourself so you can do well in the run which will help your time more than the swim and bike.

Chris, I am following the 18 week olympic plan on trinewbies.com. I am using it as a guide and doing as much as possible plus adding weights as well.

Jay

I looked at a lot of training plans but could never find one that fit where I was physically. Some were either wayyy too hard and too much time involved and some were way too easy.  I refer back to them sometimes to see how I'm doing as far as distances go, but for the most part I just wing it on my own.  The swimming and biking I don't have a problem with, it's the run that I dread the most because there's not one thing about running I enjoy :-(.  I've been thinking seriously about joining a running group but haven't made that step yet.

Cynthia, that is great about the compliments. I'm sorry about the doctor's appointment. I hope all is easily resolved.

Everyone, as far as plans are concerned, I feel like you must do what works. How do you know what works? You test and benchmark. That way if you are doing your own plan, following someone else's plan to the letter or a hybrid of different plans or just winging it you can see improvement and measure it. What tests or benchmarks? Things like a 1000 yard time trial in the pool, a repeatable 5K on the run, a 40K time trial on the bike. Are you getting faster? Is the effort easier or harder? This let's you see if what you are doing is working. Also, if you are mish-mashing your plan or winging it make sure you plan recovery or rest days and that you build in recovery weeks in your plan. This is what allows you to absorb the training load. Personally, I like to follow a plan. I have been known to make my own or to follow a stock plan, but I like the accountability of knowing what I need to do each day in advance of doing the workout.

Thanks for the tips...I am currently following the HIM plan on this site...I need to reup my Bronze level membership so I can adjust my training days.  I have no HIM planned but I really want to do better on my OLY.  Maybe later in the season I will have the courage to do a HIM.
