DropSquad - 2012-02-28 11:21 AM So i've just been keeping up with the lifting and swimming.  Went for a bike ride the other day and a solid 15mph cross wind and a dick of a car driver caused me to go head over heals with my bike.  I have some nice road rash so thats going to keep me out of the pool for a few days while I heal up a bit.  Probably just stick with lifting in the mean time.  Really trying NOT to push it just yet.  I'm starting to feel some sore spots mainly in my right shoulder blade that i'd like to not get worse before actually training kicks in.

Ah you got to be careful out there! Car's are terrible....

I hope you all invest in getting a road ID. I know a few people who have been hit buy a car. It's something pretty cheap that you can wear that has emergency contact on it so in case you do get hit. You can find more information about them here... Road ID Info! ;

Stay cautious and be safe out there....

Everlong--I don't have aero bars; it's a road bike.

Shellback--I don't think I have a death grip, but I'll try to loosen up.  And I do have Road ID

DropSquad--I went a$$ over teakettle avoiding a tractor one time.  Freaked me out and the road rash kept me out of the pool for a bit too.  I have to admit, it made me nervous on the bike for a bit, which I really don't like.  Still better to crash yourself than get hit, though--good thing you were paying attention and avoided the car.  I hope you heal quickly!

sneakers and pedal cage.   What do you recommend that is durable and won't brake the

So what's everybody up to?

I want to know so I can train vicariously

Hey Swimsoft... sorry to hear you're still not 100%.

I've had a couple of unintentional light weeks, but have been concentrating on the following:

Swim: Bilateral breathing... it makes me feel like a 5yr old learning how to swim. I guess I'm not an ambiturner.

Bike: Raising my cadence... I have never had a cadence meter on a bike before, so I've been keeping track of it as a ride recently.  Turns out I like to ride in the 60-70 range.  I've been trying to focus on keeping it 80-90 and not worrying about speed for the moment.

Run: I actually have been using these a mental recharge recently.  Technically there is so much mental effort right now in the other two events that I have been just taking the dog out and doing 5-mile trail runs.  No watch, no exact distances, no heart rate... nada.  I LOVE IT.  I also broke out an old Sony walkman the other day with a cassette and listened to an old Poison album!

Also, this has always been a problem, but with less to distract me indoors, it's more frustrating:  my hands go numb on the bike fairly quickly--within the first 30-45 minutes.  I've got decent gloves, the bike was fit to me...am I doomed to keep shaking out my hands continually?  I have had carpal tunnel syndrome in the past, so perhaps that's just enough extra difficulty...?

Peregrine - As Scott said, you may be gripping the bars to tightly.  I also find that straightening your lower back will ease up the pressure on your arms and hands (ie you may be slouching slightly).

Also it looks like I won't be able to make the indoor tri in Nashua.  If there is another one you are looking at let me know, I'd love to join you and start putting faces to the names! (and of course get some good training in...)

I'd either look into Look Pedals or Shimano... I personally uses Speed Play, but that's what I've been accustomed to.

I have not posted in awhile. Training has been going great. My first sprint is in 24 days. I have been splitting my workouts up and not putting anything together until a couple of weeks ago. I completed a 15 mile bike ride then tried to run. I quickly found out that my legs did not want to work properly on my run. I see why they call it brick training because that is what my legs felt like during the run. I pushed it very hard during my bike ride and didn't have much left for my run. I know this is something that I'm going to have to work on over the next few weeks. I have got my 300m swim down to 6.30, I'm not sure if this is a good time or not but I'm pretty comfortable with it. I am a little concerned with the bike to run transition though. I guess I shouldn't go as hard on the bike and save my legs for the run.

Well one way to tell is by wearing a Heart Monitor. You're going to have a 10 beat offset from the swim, to the bike, to the run. You still have 24 days, left so each time you bike, go out for a short jog after... Start within 10 mins of finishing the bike, run for 10 mins, the next time out, run for 15, and so on. By doing this, you'll get used to the feeling of your legs and will be able to push everything you have left. Leave nothing on the course

SNOW DAY!!!  And we're onto the trainer

Chris--bummer about the indoor tri.  There really isn't too much else until the outdoor ones start up and I'm not doing any of those until I don't need a wetsuit...since I don't have one.  Sounds like the runs are fun and I bet your dog loves you.  Bilateral breathing does indeed make you feel totally awkward but is WELL worth it and you will get used to it and more comfortable.

dkhickman--you may be doing better than you think off the bike.  I did a duathlon last year: 5k, 17 mile ride, 5k.  Even though the second 5k felt like torture and I was singing Dory's "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." in order to keep going, I discovered afterward that my times were only about a minute apart.  It sucks, but your time may not.  A potential silver lining for you.

I already have a foam roller, but I've been wondering about those roll-y stick-y massage thingies because my legs are consistently tight.  Anyone use one?  Any other ideas?  I'm on a very tight budget...

Well since my injury my training level has taken a nose dive. Running was, and is still, not allowed, biking was too painful for awhile, and the pool I was using closed down for the Big10 swimming and diving championships (a drawback to a super-nice university pool). Then I had to go to New Orleans for a conference and the gym there was closed, and since running was out- I had nothing. I am desperate to get back into a routine.

peregrinesgirl- walmart has a knock off of "The Stick" that runners are so fond of for about $18.

In other news here is a picture of my beautiful birthday present, that hopefully I will actually get to ride outdoors soon:

That's a lovely birthday present   I hope you get to use it outdoors soon...we got almost a foot of snow today, so I'm not holding my breath until I can take mine outdoors

Is water running possible?  People are always doing that in the dive well where I swim.  Looks kind of funny, but I'm betting it's useful...  No impact, constant relatively low resistance.

Thanks for the Wal-Mart tip; I work right next to one, I'll have to pop in and see what they've got.

I'm really pleased:  Did my longest run since the beginning of January, 6 miles, and even staying completely aerobic, I did it at 4.9 mph instead of 4.7, which is what I was at when I quit running and started PT   Ok, I admit, I also had the incline at 1% instead of 2%, but I'm still happy.  And my knee is fine.  I keep waiting for my favorite shirt to be on sale:  It's a turtle giving you the evil eye and it's captioned "I AM running".  I figure people might be confused when they see me.

"The Stick" on the ultra-cheap/downright stingy--I bought a wooden rolling pin for $5.  For quads and hamstrings, which is what I bought it for, it works quite well.

Any of you pay attention to Endurance Nation?  Anyone use any of their plans or even just their basic philosophy of fast before far?  They're running a free 8 week "Fast Camp" that I signed up for and I'm wondering what I got myself into...

Who-hoo made it through a consistent week of training here are my totals:

Running 0X: 0.00 (I'm getting very antsy)

Swimming 3X: 16,000 yards (I did an extra long swim for my b-day )

Spin 6X: 8 hours (all but 1 of the instructors were cyclists- great way to prep for outdoor riding. There are a lot of triathletes in classes. One instructor did his first IM at 55, he's won his age group at a few of them, and this year he's turning 60 so is planning on doing 5 IMs to celebrate- inspirational!

Pump: 2X

Awesome Job on the running. Glad to see you're approving.

I haven't heard anything from Endurance Nation. Curious, how it will go though.

Missed a week of training - but I did get a week of skiing in.  Know I'm diving back in.

Does anyone have any experience with the Total Immersion method for swimming?

I have done some TI swimming, we do some drills at Masters but, TI is good to find balance in the water. As a triathlete, you don't usually incorporate TI swimming as a whole. (that's what my coach has told me) Look on youtube to find some of the drills there.
