Go to the doctor! It may not be a cold. The rattling sounds like what I had, bronchitis. They will give you an inhaler with medicine that works wonders. It doesn't get rid of the cough entirely but it lessens the pain and makes breathing much, much easier. They told me not to work out until it goes away (which I told him wasn't going to happen and he laughed and said "fair enough") because your lungs are not getting enough oxygen because the airway is clogged. Then your heart doesn't get enough oxygen in the blood and it has to work harder, making you more tired and unable to do what should be easy. The doctor ended up just saying: keep an eye on your heart rate whatever activity your doing to make sure its not out of countrol.

Good luck! colds are so annoying.

peregrinesgirl - 2012-04-11 9:45 AM I am really struggling.  Since getting back from OR, I've been fighting jet lag and a cold.  The cold isn't that bad, at least not most of the time.  Though I've had to push on the run and the bike, I've managed to do the work on my plan for those two most of the time--but I can't go as fast as I want on the run and if it's too cold, I wheeze and hack.  Where it's been killing me is the swim.  By the end of a 300 yard warm up, I can hear my lungs rattling when I breathe (and it's deep--not the stuff you can cough up and move on).  I managed last night's workout, but not this morning's.  The run went fine, but when I went to the pool, I couldn't manage at all.  In fact, not only could I not hold 1:50 for 400 yards (supposed to do 5 sets), I couldn't hold 1:56.  Then I could barely manage 2:00.  I was trying not to cough, but the rattling was getting to me.  I know I'd be better off with around 24 hours between swims, but sometimes that isn't possible.  Should I just not swim for a while?  Just take it slow every single time?  Until the cold goes away, obviously--not forever!

Sorry to hear about the sickness. If you have symptoms below the neck like a temperature, body aches, fluid in chest- wet cough you are typically better off with sleep/rest and skipping workouts. If you have symptoms above the neck - sore throat, dry cough then continuing to train is fine but stay in zone R.

So proceed with your plan within the above rules.

Thanks for the advice, guys.  It's kind of been decided for me today--and you were both right.  Couldn't sleep last night because I was so cold (4 blankets and a heating pad).  Finally slept, but woke up overheated.  Couldn't go back to sleep because I was too cold.  I could hear/feel my heart, so I checked--RHR of 102 can't be a good thing.  Slight fever of 101.5.  Today's plan--no work, no work out, just me and the couch and some tea.  Possibly tomorrow too.  It would really bother me if I could summon the energy and get past the headache.  And my bike is sitting right in front of me in here in the living room, looking like a million bucks   Today's goal--remain unconscious as long as possible.

Night riders--what kind of headlight do you use?  I've got a good rear light, but definitely not a good enough headlight.

Swimsoft, if there was a prize for "Guess that Illness", you'd have won.  The official word is acute bronchitis with clinical evidence of lower left lobe pneumonia.  And an inhaler   And antibiotics.  And no working out at all for 4-5 days (if she wasn't a triathlete herself, I'd find it easier to ignore that).  She was sympathetic, but quite straight about it.

Shellback, I'll have to see if my bike shop has that.  My work schedule threatens daylight biking time, so if you guys are doing it safely and regularly with proper equipment, well, then I'll have to too, won't I.

today ran 2 at night to break in my new shoes "newtons" perhaps they are over priced but so far its kept my hip from acting up and if it costs an extra 75 to be forced into a stride that prevents my hip from hurtings, i'll pay it.  Also biked for an hour this morning before work with 30 mph sustained winds and 40 mph gusts.  Rough morning.

That said, the hardest thing so far about training is most definitely the early morning training.  I love my sleep more than anyone in the world an cutting it an hour soon to be an hour and a half short is mentally brutal.

If they work, they're not overpriced:  $75 is a pretty small price to pay for consistent lack of pain!  I don't think I've ridden in wind that bad--do you feel like you're going over?  Are you in any danger of actually going over?  I will challenge your position as ultimate lover of sleep   You're seriously dedicated to be cutting it back.  That said, any way you can get to bed earlier to make up for it?

Last night was my first workout since last Wednesday morning.  She said 4-5 days Thursday morning, so I figured I was behaving myself   I went to the gym to ride, figuring that way I could stop at any point and not have to make it back home if things went south.  I allowed myself 45 minutes tops and only Z1 (bottom heart rate for Fink).  I went 12 miles!  I was so stunned!  And I didn't cough at all, though when I'd near the top of Z1, I could feel myself wanting to, so I'd back off a bit.  16mph in Z1--I'm so pleased it's embarrassing.  And I wanted to ride again this morning but am forcing myself to wait a full 24.

Subject: My First Race

So I started having hip trouble again and went back to the doctor. Thank goodness- still not fractured. They decided instead of resting it I should have been pushing it with stretches and strengthening, so I'm on a PT regimine and unable to run for at least another month.

So I decided instead to do my first road race. It was awesome. Because of bad weather the past week I hadn't gotten a chance to look at the course (its also a half hour away by car) so I went a practice round right before the race. Now this is in rural Iowa in amish country- I had to learn how to pass horse and buggies (and horse droppings) and farm equipment on the roads. I was one of only 3 ladies not on a team. I've never done a group ride and was intimidated by other bikes (there was 10-15 in my pack). I fell behind the first half mile and thought I would be dropped. I didn't, in fact I led most of the race. I realize this is not a smart strategy if I wanted to win because you have to break the wind, but I was racing myself. When I wasn't in the front I wasn't able to climb at my speed- which I discovered is my advantage. I ended up finishing right in the middle of everyone. But it was by far my fastest time- 12.77 miles in 37:03 minutes.

It was so great! I can't wait for another one.

That's awesome!  Congratulations!  A great race is like nothing else   I'm pleased that you got that boost.  I hope your hip responds quickly and well to the PT.

I always swim/bike/run first.  That's partly personal preference, partly belief in forcing my body to burn fat and partly the fact that I can't eat for at least half an hour after taking synthroid.  If I'm doing more than one thing though, I'll eat something in between.

I got a wetsuit!!  Ok, technically it's not in my grubby little paws yet, but my credit card knows it's mine   I did the Xterra promo here for the Vortex full sleeve.  I figure, with their return policy, it's as safe and cheap as I'm going to get.  Anyone else have Xterra? Thoughts?  Opinions?

Anyone want to do the Nashua Y-Tri on June 10?  I know a few of you are in the area...  I'm going to ride the course on May 19.

What's everyone doing for strength training?  I, um, stopped for a while and need to restart.  Scott, have you ever used or are you familiar with Fink's "functional strength training" regimen?  It's not weights (or at least not really).  I'd like to know what you think of it.

I haven't... However, All my strength training lately has been TRX which I love...  I'll have to look into that plan though, never heard of it

Don Fink's "Be Iron Fit".  My little sister, who is to blame for my involvement here, referred to it as her bible, which is why I bought the book.

Clearly skimping on the bike.  Thanks for posting, Chris--keeps me paying attention to my numbers and gives me something to work toward.  When my parents came to my marathon, they had a stuffed turtle on a fishing pole so I could find them in the crowd--that's me, turtle girl

I finally found a bike elevation for Pumpkinman on Strava (the official link just keeps loading and never gets there).  I'm glad I have hills around here to practice on!  Speaking of which, I'd really like to get elevation data on my favorite routes.  Mapmyride and ridewithgps aren't working for me, for some reason.  Any other ideas?  I don't have gps myself, so I can't just go out and ride them to get it either.

I thought since we'd been archived (and yes, participation dropped off) that our turn was over.  No?

I've just started Week 7 of Fink's Competitive Plan.  It's nice to drop back into Z2 after all the FastCamp stuff!

Any ideas on how to sleep better without drugs?  I've been waking up godawfully early (4-5, when the alarm is set for 6) even though I've been keeping a fairly strict schedule (bed at 10, up at 6--I'm one of those people whose lives go straight to hell in a handbasket if they don't get enough sleep).  And it's not that that's too much and I'm just not tired enough--I've been having a hard time keeping myself awake on the road while driving to and from work.  I go to sleep fairly quickly/easily, but wake up too early.  I'm tired.  What can I do?

My first sprint tri is this coming Sunday.  I, um, don't really know what I'm doing and I'm worried that when I'm trying to move fast, I'll screw it up somehow--basically transitions.  I'm going to practice this week, obviously, and drill myself repeatedly on Saturday, but I'd really appreciate any tips/tricks/important things to remember that I'm likely to forget, etc.  Actually, any advice at all!

Here's what I have right now:  Transition bag containing: small towel for standing on/wiping off, socks, bike shoes, bike gloves, sunglasses, (helmet will sit on the bike so that it cannot be forgotten!) and water bottle (Gatorade, probably) will also be full and on the bike.  T2 stuff:  running shoes, cap.  It just seems like such a short list.

First sprint recap:  Total time--1:39:52, Swim 12:41, Bike 52:36, Run 28:04

Things I did wrong:  New things for race day included--new tri shorts and sports bra (literally never worn before), first OWS since high school, and although I've done a couple bike/run bricks, I did not practice transitions.

Things I did right:  Kept swimming despite a freak-out, walked after the swim until I had my head together and was up the hill and ready to jog, pushed steady/hard through the bike and held my pace on the run.  It was probably for the best that I had no timing/pacing device at all--it seems I can always go faster than I think or plan.

Things to change for next time:  rinse feet before putting on bike shoes, get in lots of OWS and wetsuit practice.

Scott?  Any input?  Anything you can see that should be addressed that I've missed?

2 weeks of wedding planning, bachelor parties, 10 year college reunion, and a cross country drive to my summer abode.... That all means there was minimal/little training. Getting psyched for the next 11 weeks though as it can now be my number 1 focus. I will be on Facebook much less for the next couple of months, but will update when possible! Good luck to everyone until then!
