I use a different rear tire on my trainer and it gets pretty bald.

Looks like I should warn my team about their impending doom....

That sounds like a lot of $$, but I have two thoughts:

1.  If you want to do the race and you have the $$, then do it.

2.  If you want to do the race and don't have the $$, do the race, take video, and then sell the video to Trevor to recoup your entry fee Laughing

Matt, good to see you back.

Maybe I can get Fatty to go video it. he knows hows to work a camera.

Just ask my wife.

GAWD that's alot of $$$ for a short race. We have an Olympic here thats $100 and that seems a bit much.

But on the otherhand, it's a whole lot of chickies running around in spandex. how do you put a price on that. I've heard they even sunscreen each other and all that jazz in T1.

Maybe Julia should volunteer. She could be the 'sock-puller-upper' girl.

Danskin is expensive like that, too. I think it depends on what you're looking for in a race. Danskin was kind of like the Rock-n-Roll races: lots of people, lots of training and race-day support for beginners, big party atmosphere. Packet pick-up at Danskin was such a zoo it took up half the day. Getting to and from the race, also a zoo. I prefer cheap, no-frills races where you show up race morning, race, and go home. No rock bands required!

And no, Trevor, I will not be volunteering as sock-puller-upper. Even I know that you don't wear socks in a sprint! ;-)

Yhea, what's up with those races costing so much?  I get the emails for all the races in the MD Columbia area and they seem rediculously expensive to me.  But maybe it's designed to draw a different crowd.  I don't see many newbes signing up at that price so it will be a much more competative pool of racers.

Ok MG I am hoping you can assist me in creating my training schedule, I have “Anchor” workouts that I would like to build around. They are a coached brick workout on Thursday mornings, medium  group ride Tuesday mornings, Masters swim Wednesday & Friday Mornings, Coached speed workouts Wednesday evenings. I want to take advantage of the coached workouts provided by my club and masters (for the coaching and accountability motivation to show up).

So with that said that’s 2 swims, 2 runs, 2 bikes. The coached Bricks are only an hour long and are multi brick sessions, the speed workouts are usually about 20-30 mins of actually running after a dynamic warm up and some core work, masters sessions are 1 hour 2000 yds

I want to add a Long Bike, Long Run, Medium Run, and 2 Swims. My problem is the spacing of the workouts. I would prefer long rides on Saturdays and Long runs on Sundays

Monday: (AM)________, (PM)________

Tuesday: Group Ride (6AM), (PM)__________

Wednesday: Masters Swim (6-7AM), Speed Run Workout

Thursday: MultiBrick (6-7AM), (PM)_________

Friday: Masters Swim (6-7AM),(PM)__________

Saturday:

Sunday:

I am thinking Swim Monday and Tuesday, Long run Sunday, Medium run Thursday evening, Long bike Saturday

Thoughts?

thoughts... i think you're crazy.  but lets get back to that in a bit...

here's what i see in the above and your 2012 race schedule. tell me where i'm wrong. give me (us) some more input please...

  • working out twice a day everyday.  the schedule above is already at 10 hours a week NOT including the long run and ride on saturday and sunday.
  • what do you mean by long bike and run (miles or time) - Peak in September at 57.1 miles bike and 17.5 miles run
  • first 70.3 in september
  • an OLY 4 weeks before the 70.3 - This is still up for debate, I just like racing
  • 2 sprints on the horizon.
  • what are "multi-brick" sessions? - We have a Multi loop park (3.35 mile loop and a 2.5ish mile loop) in the hour we wold do multiple bike run efforts so either a small or big loop then a short run and repeat.
  • when does your 70.3 plan start? - Starts May 6th with "A" race September 30th

I use the Gold custom plans on this site and generated my current plan using 4/3/3 schedule with 4 swims since thats my weakest discipline. My thougts were to switch to a 2/2/2  and add in the Masters swims to replace 2 swims, the Bricks and speed work to replace the short bike and short run in my current plan.

Here are the current total monthly distance/time for the plan that I am currently going to follow

                             BIKE                                            RUN                                             SWIM

Since I am bored at work. matt gave us a challenge and here it is:

Post 1:   I didn't see a closed sign hanging yet...do you have room for one more?

Post 2:

SWEET THANKS!!!

Story   My name is John Davis  I'm 37, happily married with 2 children, 1 on the way and 3 dogs.  Five years ago I ran the Marine Corps Marathon but since put a lot of weight on.  I had a physical in August and tipped the scales at 6' 4" 275.  I know I want to be around as long as I can so I needed to do something.  I started running again, quit drinking beer every night and have since lost almost 40 pounds. (on the BMI chart I'm no longer obese, small victory)

2009 Races Just finished my first triathlon at the Lonestar 1/4 last Sunday (check out my race report if you are bored) 5/15 Silverlake Sprint,  7/7 Tejas Sprint,  6/28 Buffalo Springs Lake IM 70.3

Issues  I am officially addicted to triathlon & I spend way way way to much time on BT.  Please help!

Kevin, are the trainers standard fluid type?  Or Computrainers?  I have used both and the Kurt Kinetic one I had did tear up the rear tire (I would find little bits of rubber all over the wall behind me or on the exercise mat I set the bike up on-hence I bought one of those Conti trainer tires and that worked well), but the CT seems to not affect my rear tire.

Hey Andre!  That's a LOT of training, but hey, training's fun and you are young.  You mentioned a lot in your post.  I just want to touch on the Long Ride/Long Run on back to back days being not so ideal?  I personally found that doing a Wed or Thursday long run left me more fresh for my long ride on the weekend, not just physically but also mentally.  Is there a way you can split that up?

Are the mini-bricks something you want to do from a club-social aspect?  If so, then it sounds like fun.  Again, speaking from personal experience, I don't do really any bricks except for race-specific stuff the month before my races...and maybe a short T run after some of my long bikes.

Re: Oly 4 weeks before HIM, that can work out pretty well.  Some people say to treat it as a training day, but I've raced mine like a regular Oly the past 3 years and thought it was great prep for my HIM's, and helped me work out some kinks in my transitions and mental stuff.

Good luck with the planning!!

First question, what distance are you training for?  when you say long run and long ride what does that mean?

I agree that doing your long ride and long run back to back can be fatiguing AND will compromise the quality of the run.  I also don't see a rest day each week?  where does that fit in?  Finally, I ASSUME there will be some sort of three week build, followed by a recovery week, right?

Haha I am training for a Half iron in September, and the program generator here does either a 2 week build with week 3 recovery or 3 week build with week 4 recovery. i am going with the 3 week build option.

The long run can be moved to during the week but the bike has to stick on the weekends. And yea I dont have a rest day. I figured a monday swim day would be rest/recovery ish enough

It seems a bit high to me based on my limited exposure, I have completed 2 Sprints this year and both were $85.  Is there some special reason they are charging more???

The same club, Tri Columbia, puts on the race IronGirl Columbia which sells out quickly every year. It also is $145

So many things going on in this thread!

Hey Justin, didn't you say you had a cheat sheet of all the people in the thread?  For real?  Can you post it?

Rob, I'd love to see your core workouts.  *sigh* I'm coming to accept that I actually need to do them.  Can I go back to my twenties when I was invincible and could do whatever I want to my body without trying to stay balanced?

Welcome Kevin, make sure to post lots of pictures.

Welcome Matt.  I'd say "welcome back", but I wasn't here when you were before, so that would just be confusing.

Welcome Jeremy, I think a lot of us have weight loss stories, either current, or in the past.  Congrats on number 4!  I think all of you who let the kids outnumber parents are very brave!

I do think $145 for a sprint is a lot, but it wouldn't necessarily mean I wouldn't do it.  You have to decide if it's worth it to you.  Seems like there's a lot of frills to the race, so if you like that, go for it.

Trainer: I use a trainer tire.  I've used my road tire on my trainer a couple times and there was noticeable wear just from that.  I would never use it regularly.

Hmmm, Now I'm debating whether I should do my long run on Thursdays rather then the weekend.  (Currently I do my long bike on Sat and long run on Sun).

I'm curious if anyone wants to go over photo posting.  Does it have to somewhere else on the web to post it?  I've only done pics that I already have on my blog, but it would be easier if there's just a way to upload it to BT.

So, I got my first outdoor ride of the year in today!  It was great.  I thought it was a bit windy, but while riding away from town, it didn't seem so bad.  Then when I turned around, BAM!  Total headwind.  I need to pay more attention to tail winds so that I actually appreciate them.  On the plus side, the way back has more downhill, so it lessened the blow of the headwind.

It is ALWAYS windy around here, so I may as well get used to it.

So, I think if you want to attach a picture that you have stored in your computer as a jpg file, you check the box down below that says "attach a file after posting".  I'm going to try it right now and see if my pic comes up.  It has to be under some certain MB or it won't upload but I use webresizer.com to make my photos smaller...then upload the new, smaller opt. image.  What pic should i upload????  So many to choose from!

Now, if you want to use the little tree that Suzy was alluding to, I think it has to be a copy and paste type web link.

I didn't know the "Attach a file after posting" thing would work with pics.  Wow, I learn something new every day, and some of them are even worthwhile.  So I might gross you all out, but here is a pic from November 2010.  This was phase one in my running journey.  I had surgery for chronic exertional compartment syndrome (both legs).  This was the price I paid just to be able to begin running.  And, I have to say it was well worth it.  I just wish I would have known years earlier that my condition wasn't just a case of "shin splints".  Weight loss was mentioned by a couple people today.  I've lost 35 lbs since I started running!!

Thoughts?

Uhm, NO!  The body needs a day to recoup the benefits of all of your hard work.  Even a swim takes energy.  I know you are young and viral (visualizng that running photo), but don't short change your progress by being an idiot (said nicely!).  If it is not every week, insert a rest day every other week.  Signed, the old lady of the group who used to work out 360 days a year, but has made way more progress with RECOVERY Days.

PS. I like the three week build.  That fourth week is a blessing on so many levels.
