I'm still working through this back pain and it's quite frustrating. I really shouldn't sweat slowing down for a few weeks b/c I've been training continiously for well over a year without any real breaks. BUT, I feel like a lazy slug! Living vicariously through all of your posts, resting, icing, stretching, strengthing, and snap-crackle-popping! If I weren't happily married, I'd propose to my chiro. Jacki Jax ugh frustrating. But you are right. This break may do you well as your body heals up from more than the back issue. Training continuous does exact a toll. Many peeps take an "off-season" to allow the body to recover as well as the mind from that long continuous training. But ya don't have to like it. |

New user 105 Wauwatosa, WI | Subject: RE: Oriolepwr and QuincyF's Magical Mys-tri Tour "The Sequel"-OPEN Hi Todd, thanks for your note. I spoke to my local bike guy, and he told me the trick to avoiding a flat tire 95% of the time, is to make sure that your tires are inflated every ride. Simple but effective, I have been occasionally guilty of going out with only 70-80 lbs of pressure, instead of a 100. He, then offered to show me how to change a flat if I bought a CO2 cartridge and tire kit (he's a good salesman). I am really hoping not to blow a tire out on my rides! As for rock climbing, I'll let you know after Racine. Today, was a track workout, 2 mile warm up, 4 400's, 4 800's, 2 mile cool down. Tired and my lungs hurt, but happy to finish. We'll have to hook up after the race- Rob |

We'll have to hook up after the race- Rob I'm more guilty of over-inflating my tires! Most flats are "pinch flats" created by improper seating of the tube. A flat sux. multiple flats REALLY sux. Flat fixing is a skill that does need to be learned. So by all means have the guy show you and practice it. Just get extra co2 carts. It is not that easy especially in a race where you are trying to do it as fast as you can. It can end your day if you do it poorly. Wish I could be in town to celebrate/hang/congratulate you guys @ Racine. But alas I can't |

I biked 12 on monday, 22 on tuesday and 22 today. I have to get back in the pool and no running for 2 weeks to see if my PF gets better. I miss the bike riding days when I would go out and do 50, 60, 80! I think my body is in shock from going from heavy training to zero...nada...zippo.As my husband says...be patient..be patient it will all come back. I am thinking of signing up for an olympic in July, hubby says do the sprint...crazy mou says olympic...what to do..what to do.. hope everyone is having a great day! Cheers to all! Alicia Alicia- you are having the worst luck. I mean you got PF from NOT running?? weird. perhaps the way to fix it would be to run? J/K it's a good thing you have such a positive attitude. BTW it's not even in question. I know you like the longer distance stuff best. So you'll sign up for the Oly Cheers back at ya! |

Good start to the season. Yes Very good start Mike! Another PR for next weekend now right?? If the wind is decent on the bike and it's not too hot on the run, a PR is a real possibility. The bike is out in the country and last year there was a brutal headwind on the way back. The run is out and back over a dam lined with rocks that radiate heat like a sauna and the last two years it's been hot. Mike- you are rolling with a fresh PR under your belt. Even if its hot and Sauna like, you will PR this one as well I'm thinking. PMA! |

Sarah, around here and probably in NY the popular tri's can sell out so you kind of need to decide early on which ones you want to do. I am doing the spontaneous way this year b/c I don't want to sign up for stuff until I know my shoulder can handle swimming, but I like having stuff on the calendar in advance. I think the training plan people automatically plan a season around their plan...most plans for longer distances have smaller races leading up to the longer race...also if you're good enough to "peak" for a race you would want to know when to do that. But all of that being said, i am enjoying having the flexibility to do what I want...and not worrying about peaking and all of that stuff is fine by me...I'm not sure I'm at that level anyway. So whatever works for you works, right? |

Expert 1358 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Oriolepwr and QuincyF's Magical Mys-tri Tour "The Sequel"-OPEN OK, I enjoy the mentoring thing, but I get depressed sometimes b/c of my shoulder and having my season up in the air, but I wanted to report some good news in that the training plan I'm following for IMMoo has me working on improving my FTP which doesn't mean anything except my volume is not time, it's intensity. For instance, yesterday I did a 1 hour run, but during the run I did 2x1/2mi and 2x1mi intervals on 3 minutes rest, for a total of 6.75 miles...basically trying to stay at a high heart rate/intensity for those intervals and then a medium intensity for the rest of the run. The bike is the same thing...today I am doing an hour but the main set is 2x15min high intensity. Anyway, I am surprised to find out that I enjoy this kind of training and even though I've only been at it for about 3 weeks, I am starting to feel gains in my fitness, which is super exciting. Plus I have been thinking about doing some time trialing and this kind of training is perfect for that, so excited to see how it pans out for me. Just wanted to share that...I'm glad I finally found some focus in my training...it's been hard with my season up in the air and now it doesn't matter because I'm on the right path either way...happy! |

So whatever works for you works, right? That makes sense. With marathon training I usually schedule 1 or 2 races per year, and my training is based on 'peaking' for those. Then, I just run occasional races throughout the year as time permits. I think I'll probably follow the same plan for triathlons, as well. I have Austin HIM in mind for October, and I'll just race some local sprints and olys until then. Of course, having said that, my husband is really wanting more kids, and the clock is tick tick ticking for me! How dare he ask me to interrupt my training to get pregnant!! So, I probably won't sign up for Austin until the deadline, that way I won't be out almost $300 bucks if I am pregnant... or I could race with a big sign pointing to my belly "racing for two (or three)" if I end up with another litter! |

Q, That is awesome. I sometimes think I need to get better/ more purposeful with my training. I pretty much just do some swimming, biking and running a couple of days / week. I throw in some fitness classes and call myself training. I know though, that if I really want to see improvement- I'll need to start getting more focused and specific with my training. I just haven't decided if I really want to put that much into it yet. I do tri's because this is a fun way for me to stay fit. Completing is my goal but the more I do it, and the longer I'm here- the more I think about trying to compete some. It's very inspirational to hear someone is doing that (the more focused training) and seeing improvement. Shelly |

I've never tried purposeful "interval" training. My intervals are more um.... spontaneous, and involve bursts of slowness. LMAO. Shelly |
