TrBeau17 - 2012-10-18 4:41 PM I'd be curious to know for those of your that weren't elite runners when you started the 30 in 30 challenge, do you feel like your slow easy pace got faster without doing anything different?

This time, some yes. It's easier to do more miles, but I'm not pushing the easy pace so much. I did notice this more last year and into early this year, when I was running better than 95% of the days over several months (so basically missing about 1 day a month for 5 months or so).

What was more important than easy pace getting faster was my threshold pace getting faster, as that's closer to where I was racing at. Looking at easy pace to see about fitness can be misleading for several reasons. One is that it's more of a range, and just moving the effort up a bit within that can still seem "easy", but you'll be going faster because of it.

Muskrat is on the right track with his description of the efforts. Harder days can be harder by way of more running and/or faster running. These should be spread out some with easier days in between. Something to learn is to be able to push yourself on these days, but not so much that you can't run easy the next day. Generally you should be feeling pretty good again within a day or two. And you shouldn't be laboring to get through the next day's easy run.

Brigby1,

You're correct I should have worded it "threshold" pace, because that is what I'm trying to increase.

3 miles yesterday (making it day 34!) and my second mile was a 7:45 pace!

that's CRAZY FAST for me -- most of my runs in the 9 mm range. I just felt good and the weather was perfect. WHEEEEEE

Day 2 of ?: 1 hour mixed run/walk with warm up and cool down. Many injuries in the past and hoping that consistent daily running at a modest pace (like a granny with a walker) will allow me to build a very good base by January.

Thank you both for starting this...

I was thinking about this earlier, but "ran" my first marathon on Sunday and could barely walk for two days after that.

So as of last night, 2/2.  Each run 5k; first was 32 minutes.  Last night, in the rain, the Garmin was hidden under my jacket sleeve for my run.  Since I have no feel for pace, or effort, I decided I'd run by what felt like "just a little harder than easy, but a fair bit easier than 5k race".  It turned out to be 27:30, which was 90 seconds behind my PR raced in April at the end of my C25K program, before I raced any triathlons and before I started the marathon training.

Tonight I'll turn the pace alarm on the watch back on and dial it back down to 11 minute miles.  If I feel the need for speed I'll tack some strides on at the end.

I almost let myself talk me out of a run last night.  Glad I did not cave.  17 days and counting...

I've probably ran 26 of the last 30 days; I've only started logging them and its only 2 miles, but its all I can really do right now (my ankle is trashed).

Even with the short mileage it does feels like I'm getting a better ROI than 4x a week with more miles.

I got in day 6 yesterday, 2 miles easy with a buddy who needs a lot of run help, followed by a miles worth of hill repeats at .10 miles per uphill stretch.

Ran a marathon this morning, not sure how many days in row I am but somewhere around 332 or so. I finished in 3:35 and some change good enough for 32nd overall finisher but only good enough for 7th in my age group of 50-59 year old men. I thought turning 50 this year I might have a chance on placing in a race, I guess not, those 50 plus year old are as fast as the 40-49 year olds. Still ahpping with the results though. I know there were 196 singed up for the full, it was the Monster Mash marathon in Dover, Delaware and the first mile was around the NASCAR track which was really cool.

Oh yeah the distance today was 26.28 miles I ran good tangents which is easy to do in a small race like this.

I'm still going. ~7 miles this morning. Don't know how many days it is now, but I'm past the 30, so it's more about keeping the % of days run really high.

Why does it seem like you're counting by 2?

Beats me, they are all logged......I can't believe how the miles/month pile up on what feels like very little running.  I think I'll be near 100 for the month and it sure doesn't feel like a 100 mile month. My PF is not flaring and my "slow" is down to 9:10 or so from 10:00.  Minimum run is now 2.5...up from 2, and the long run will be 5.5 this week....up from 4 when I started.  The biggest problem I'm having now is fighting the urge to run faster.

Day 4.  Got my run in just a little after 11:00 p.m.; date night was cancelled because the wife was sick.  I've run my standard 5k route four straight nights now; tonight's was a leisurely 32 minutes with some strides at the end.
