Finished the week off with 112 mile bike followed by a 5 mile run today. I think I killed it this week with over 19 hours of training. Man I hope all the work I've put in carries me to the finish. It looks like a bulk of the numbers are by age group and then alphabetical... with some anomalies. for example... women 40-44, most numbers are in the 600-700s sequentially... but then there's some 100s sprinkled in. The food isn't anything to write home about but just being there gets you pumped up. IMWI was my first ever IM in '11. While we were eating and before he had to begin the program, Mike Riley came over and sat with us for about 10 minutes. When he got up to head for the stage, he patted me on the shoulder and said "You'll do great". All butterflies went away right then. What a great way to start the IM experience. My wife isn't into the IM thing but she enjoyed the program and human interest stuff. This year I think we will find other dining options since there appears to be no course briefing after dinner. |

I highly recommend putting together a packing list and to-do list as soon as possible and adding to it as you think of new things. Asking veterans about what they do/bring will also help to calm your nerves to make sure you don't forget anything. You really only need to bring your bike, helmet, and swimsuit (the prudes outside of Madison don't appriciate nudity as much as some). Your chip and bib number will be provided. If you can get to the start line with those five things ready to go, the rest just falls in the 'Nice to Have' category...just keep telling yourself that. You can race without all the other things (jersey, shorts, shoes, sunglasses, visor, nutrition, etc.), and you can make due if everything isn't perfect. |

I have gone to pre-race dinners and they just aren't for me. I have enough nervous energy that weekend without being around another 2500 people with it too!! For that reason I also don't stay at the host hotels during race weekends. It just isn't for me. I can see where it could be "energizing" and encouraging for people so that's what I mean by personal preference. I have enjoyed following along with this thread for the past months. I hope everyone has the race they have been dreaming of. Have fun, thank the volunteers and be glad we are healthy enough to participate in this race. Good luck everybody!! |

There is still lots of loose gravel and a substantial number of small but deep pot holes at the bottom of the hill on Sugar River Road. Hold a line close the the center line of the road... make sure you have space - no other riders around you. The pea gravel at the bottom of Timber Lane... the fastest hill on the course... is working it's way in. I rode the loop twice on Sunday and took the sharp left hand turn very conservatively... I'd suggest you do the same. Better safe than sorry! There is still broken glass in the bike lane on Cross Country Road about 1/4 mile from the turn off Nine Mound. It's been there for weeks but since no cars drive over it... you can still see it "glistening" in the sunlight. It's best to stay in the car lane until you get to the Stop sign. Be safe everyone! This time I'm deliberately undertrained on the run and coming to the start line without the boot
