My usual Thursday morning swim didn't happen because of a swim meet or something. They had the pool set up for the 50 meter swim instead of the 25 meter and the parking lot was full...before 5:30 a.m. so i didn't even stop. I guess I'll hve to swim in my own pool even though it is just 40 ft long, not really big enough...I can go to the lake if the lifeguard is not there.

And I'll be out of town again next week for work.

I hope everyone is training hard! Ya'll be careful out there...

Wow that's early for a meet....hopefully you can get in the lake! I'll send good juju that there won't be a lifeguard there.

Sorry you couldn't get a swim in, KARL.  I'm jealous that you have your own pool but I guess that's pretty common in FL.  Not so much in Indiana.   Do you ever come up north to give tax seminars?   If so, I'd sign up for one.  Have a safe trip to where ever you're heading next week!

Another "you know you're a triathlete when" moment....

We are trying to decorate our house since we have lived here for 6 years and have done nothing - no window coverings, not even drawer pulls on the cabinets or toilet paper holders. So we hired a designer because, well, this stuff bores me to tears, I get confused then can't make a decision and we wind up right back here with nothing. She was here last night and priced out  window treatments and my first thought was - there goes my bike budget ha ha ha!!!! NOOOOOOO, I'll just take the sun in my eyes all evening .

I get to go pick up my bike today! And we are going to work on my fit. I had a massage yesterday and there are some really nasty knots in my left leg. Now that she has worked on it my whole hip, back and everything feel great so hopefully that will get me back on the right track with the tri bike.

And the whole family must need our heads examined because we are going to the Animal Shelter to look at a Chihuahua. He already has an application out for him though so it probably won't work out but the kids are in love (we checked him out yesterday). I really need to unfriend the Animal Shelters on Facebook!

Brenda I had that same issue with my toe that has a bunion burning but since I switched to a lower drop shoe it does not bother me at all. I'm sure I'll be facing issues like what you are dealing with and that is one of the reasons I don't mind giving up any kind of long distance goals for running - I'm hoping to delay the process I guess. Good luck.

Jen, you are asking a bunch of triathletes on a triathlon forum with a group name of the Junkies, did you really think anyone would tell you not to race them both?! Ha ha ha

DINA!!!! - So true. My husband and I bought our house in November 2011; we moved from California to Georgia and literally got rid of everything in the process. Currently, our office consists of office stuff, his golf stuff (3 bags, 2 sets of clubs, 3 pairs of shoes, and lots of gear) and my stuff (includes 2 road bikes, 1 mountain bike, and lots of tri gear, and race bib #'s from all the races I have done)..... have we bought a single piece of bedroom furniture yet???.... of course not.

Did I think any Junkie would suggest not racing? If I wasn't ready, I do believe someone here would have let me know I was in over my head.

Puppies are always great family additions... no need to have your head examined!

Whenever I start to push longer swims, I notice that my pinky finer and ring finger sometimes start to cramp up as I get near the end of my swim. I know that I am not dehydrated or definicient in fuel, I am wondering if there is something wrong in my form, or if I could just be tensing since I know I am getting near the end of my workout. Has anyone ever experienced this?

It is likely that you are trying to hold your hand in a particular position for the entire work out and you are feeling the result of fatigue.  I suggest you focus on relaxing your hands through your work outs.  If you are focused on keeping all of your fingers aligned and straight to add more power or a sort of paddle you're really just wasting energy.  Allow your hand and fingers to fall where they may, so to speak, and you should see a positive result.  Try it for the next few swims and report your findings so we know if that was the issue.  If not we can look at something else.

Dirk - Now that you mention this, I feel pretty sure that I am guilty of this. I focus on keeping my hands cupped slightly, fingers apart a tiny bit and relaxed, but when my hands enter the water, I have a tendency to reach forward and try to elongate myself into a straight line. I do this slightly before pulling through my stroke. I practiced this in the air after reading your post and realized that as I do it, those two fingers straighten out during the elongating motion. I'm still going to attempt to get some swimming footage over the next week or so.

Back to my swimming question...

I did a 2,000 yard swim this morning and concentrated on just letting my had fall where it may..... can I just say WOW, what a difference? I swam the fastest I have ever swam (I am a slow swimmer to begin with) and held my core set of 500 yards at a 2:09 pace. At first I thought I was off a full lap because there is no way I could have swam that fast. Then I realized that all my laps were quicker.

Just letting my hand fall where it may enabled me to pull faster. I am 4 pounds heavier (that's what the scale said this morning), so maybe the extra weight (I'm thinking I gained some fatness in my hips) helped me float and thus enabled me to go faster... or maybe knowing that I am 4 pounds heavier made me push myself faster.

JoAnne that water temp sounds good. I'm just hoping it stays wetsuit legel so I won't drown and I hope we get a nice cool day to race on. That course is tough enough without having to worry about the weather.

Dina good luck with the interior designer but make sure you don't sacrafice your bike budget we all know what's more important lol. Also good luck with the new dog, I'm surprised to hear that you are looking to get another one. I think it would be great for Mickey though he'd have company or another partner in crime.

Karl sorry to hear you missed out on your swim at the pool. Hope you can make it up at the lake. Have a safe trip.

Jen I'll bet your swim improvement is related to your technique. That little change with your hand in your stroke sounds like it has improved your technique allowing you to have a better catch making you faster. It's amazing how a little tweak here or there can make you faster.

Jen, Ive found that I see the biggest improvements when I make a slight change. Im usually trying different things all the time to see how it effects my pace time. You never know what little change will shave a few seconds off. Glad to hear you were able to cut some good time off your 100.

I managed to get in a 12k run (thats just over 7mi, saving you guys some time, )this morining. Planning on getting a ride in tonight if the rain from Tropical Storm Andrea holds off. I had planned on taking a rest day tomorrow anyway but the 30-40mm (1" -1.5" ) of rain we are going to get sealed it. Sunday is looking OK so Im hoping to get in a long ride. Hope everyone has a great weekend and anyone racing I hope you kick butt. Dirk try not to work out too much on your weekend away, enjoy the free time.

Warren, are you still planning on running your 5k tomorrow. Curious if your still up for the friendly competition? I know sometimes as we age we lose that sense of competition, not that your aging or anything ! I have another local 5k also and plan on trying to hang with my buddy for at least 2 miles and see what happens from there! He normally finishes right around 20:00, im shooting for 20:@@. Last week I made it about 1.5 and then imploded, literally thought my kidney was going to fall out!

either way I hope work isn't stressing you out to much,

so after 3 years of training I am still trying to get a hold of HR training. I thought I understood what I was doing but if the above is correct I have been under training big time! To get the above numbers I took my average HR from last weeks 5k, is this the correct method? By the way I see it, I need to get my HR about 10 points higher on most runs.

I know a lot of heart rate training gurus say not to use a race for a test since race HRs can be misleading for a variety of reasons.

I'd suggest using pace for run training anyway if you can. Use McMillan or something similar and find your vdot, then you can find paces for various types of training runs. What are you trying to find exactly?

I just started thinking the same thing after redoing my LTHR test recently. I usually try to keep my HR at about 150 which is what I thought I tested as my high end of zone 2 on my last test. Since reading the LTHR thread on this site and redoing my test, it looks like that is still in zone 1! I'm going to do another test soon and see if I come up with the same results. My zone 2 is from 151-160. That just seems like a little 2 hard of a effort to be zone 2., from what zone 2 is usually described as.

Basically trying to make sure I am going in the right zones and at the right paces! The plan I'm following seems to be light on run distance but heavy on effort and it guides by hR zones. I have looked at McMillan a few times but not in detail. I will look again and see what it says!

We had some really miserable weather yesterday with all the rain that came through here with that tropical storm. I did manage two hours and 12 miles yesterday on the treadmill I did 12 miles of the Syracuse run course via iFit. It's a pretty tough run on the treadmill I can't imagine what it will be like after 56 miles on the bike for real. I also followed that up with another two hour 11 mile run today. I had not run much this week so I wanted to get some time in.

Tomorrow I believe we are meeting up for an OWS probably going to do a mile with the group and then I'm going to get my long ride in. I am looking to finish up with 4 hours and 70 or so miles tomorrow. Next week is a recovery week for sure I will be in Dallas for 3 days in training for work so I really will not have time to do anything. As much as it pains me not to be able to train I think this break is coming at a good time. I have race coming up on back to back weekends, the HIM in Syracuse on 6/23 and a local Oly on 6/30. Even though they are really training events for IM I still want to kill it at both races. I plan on going all out in both races and using them as mock runs for IM.

Great effort on the treadmill Tony! That is a long time to be running on that thing, and if you didn't get a good physical workout, I'm sure it was a great mental workout!

Tony awesome rides and runs! I am thinking the actual run won't be as hard as on the treadmill, and Iam going to keep thinking this, whether it is true or not

2 hours on the treadmill is incredible. I find it harder to run the treadmill than outside, so I think you're ready for the course. The rest will be a great chance for your body to absorb all the time you've been putting in lately. Maybe you can get in something easy in the hotel pool/workout room. I don't think it would be bad to do nothing though.

You should go get it at those races. Just be aware that even a HIM is a completely different animal than a full. You'll be ready for you IM.

I got a great just under three hour ride in today. I couldn't decide how to structure it, so I hit all the elements. 3x15 intervals just under threshold, a nice 30 minute segment with Kathy, and then I really tried to avoid Warner Hill, but the calling of the siren song was too strong. About 3800 feet of climbing in 51 miles, so pretty hilly overall. Legs feel fried but in a good way.

Karl have a safe trip and hope you have some better luck with the pool being opened. I have the same challenge as you and Dirk the hours at my pool are not very favorable and they close for everything.

Warren great ride, glad to see you mix it up and that is some serious elevation. I need to be doing more of that myself. As far as the treadmill goes I totally agree I would rather run outdoors but with the iFit module and being able to do some different courses it's not that bad. I prefer the shorter runs on it but it's nice to be able to run indoors when the weather is horrible outdoors.

Well I didn't make my group OWS this morning or whatever ride they wound up doing afterwards. I was just too tired to get up at 5:30 to meet up at 7:30 am this morning. I was also a little concerned about taking my bike out there as well since I just got it back from the LBS and had a bunch of work done. I did not get a chance to test ride last night so I wanted to stay local for my ride this morning.

I had the cassette changed from a 12-25 to a 11-28 plus I put on the new tires the Conti GPS4000's. I was actually concerned about the tires, the Conti's get rave reviews but the flat alot and there have been a lot side blowouts with those tires. If you get a good pair though they are great tires so I wanted to give them a shot. Well I got a 75 mile test ride in 4:30 today.

The numbers are not impressive for the ride but there are many reasons for that, I didn't push hard, I was riding my neighborhood loop about 10 or 11 miles, I ran 23 miles the last two days and I was using the new cassette. I know lot's of excuses but I was really just trying to pace well and get in at least 70 miles and get used to the new cassette. The 11-28 is much different to me from the 12-25 I was having a hard time trying to find my sweet spot in the gearing on the flats. I'm sure it's great for hills but riding flats with it is something I am going to have to get used to doing. I was also trying not to cross chain the gears either whether I was in the 50 or 34 ring up front. The real test will be next weekend when I hit the hills and see how I do.

So not bad this week another 15 plus hours of training in the books so over 32 hours the last two weeks. Glad to be getting a break the next 3 days and getting a recovery week before the HIM and the Oly. I feel like I need it.
