I have a 4 x 1 mile run test Sunday too.

Swim endurance is very much a function of form.  Someone with very little cardiovascular endurance can swim all day if they have great from, conversely someone with world class cardio will be winded after 50m if their form sucks.

Yeah, agreed, swimming is all about form... my issue comes about 45 minutes into the workout. My 18 months off from swimming is showing! On the other hand, I love how swimming lets me truly realize what muscles are sore. I don't think there is another workout that really points out sore muscles like swimming.

Good luck getting ready for the run tests guys! And best of luck with the snow this week!

Question for you, Scott, and the Group

Would you rather do mile repeats or sprints (run) or all out intervals on the bike? Personally, when I wake up and see I have to do 10x30 sec all out on the bike...I groan and HATE it versus having to do mile repeats.

But when I see that I have to do a swim test....I turn into a 2 year old who does not want to put their snow pants on.

Intervals on the bike. I love going fast on the bike, so that actually sounds fun! No question. But I HATE running sprints/hills/etc. Joined a running group and doing track workouts with them is the only way I do it. I'll trade you some bike speed work motivation for some of your run speed work motivation!!

Same as you for the swimming stuff at the moment!

Bike repeats or run repeats make no difference to me.  I may enjoy the pain on the bike marginally more than the run, but I like both.

I guess I'd rather do mile repeats. I've never been much of a sprinter (running) and I'm still finding my groove on the bike.

The 5-8 inches of snow that is forecasted for tomorrow will make it difficult to do anything outside.

Ew. Sorry.

Swim workout this morning. Kicked my butt. I also have come to despise kick sets after a brick day. However, being in the water again feels great! Seems to start the day off right!

Does anybody else eat prior to a swim workout in the morning?

I eat prior to every workout in the morning.  My opinion on fasted workouts has changed over the years.  I don't really see much benefit to them.  Many people will tell you they hit fat stores but there is little to no scientific evidence to support that.  Exercise intensity dictates the ratio of fats to carbs used in fueling.

Do you have a go to morning snack/pre-workout meal? With swimming I've been doing half a Lara bar since it's easy...

I usually have a banana before a morning swim. I yacked way too many times during morning swim practice when I was younger even without eating anything substantial beforehand. Because of that I've always been weary of eating too much before a swim in the morning.

I second a banana and a Larabar is fine too.  I have a pretty ironclad stomach so I can go cereal, fig newton, or oatmeal as well.

We are supposed to get 12 inches. Running in the snow is actually peaceful and fun if there isn't too much wind. Just slap on some yaktraxs and go.

Wait...didn't you kind of wilt a bit in the heat? And, how could someone not wilt in 100+ temps? I personally could never imagine doing that. I had a hard enough time with the humidity at Disney in Jan.

Kick sets after a brick day would be/is tough....but I take my time. Congrats in getting back in the pool and with the start of your IM training.

Power gel and scratch before the swim....coffee and perhaps some applesauce before something else in the AM. I get up way too early to do the workouts and am not coherent enough or have enough time to eat something more substantial.

My indoor triathlon is Saturday morning.  Any advice and tips before hand are welcome.  All events are timed and scored by max distances (10 min swim, 30 min bike, 20 min run).  I did this event last year.  I swam in a swim suit, changed out of it into tri clothes post swim (10 minutes trans post swim, 5 min trans post bike).  This year I think I'll just swim in my tri gear to save energy.  Plus the wet clothes might keep me cooler during the bike.  It gets HOT working out indoors!!  I hope to improve on the swim this year, but not sure about the bike or run (I'm just not a fast long distance runner - sprinting is more my thing).

Ok, now post any and all tips about nutrition, keeping cool, how to sneak in watts on a spin bike, how to keep cool, best time to fuel/drink, etc.

Are your transitions timed in this? Will they let you ride their spin bikes soaking wet?

Nutrition can be a personal thing, but I don't usually fuel during workouts/races under 90 minute duration, other than a pre-race meal of oatmeal/toast with pb and half a banana. I would probably have sips of water at 10 and 20 minutes on the bike, but would also be fine without them.

Can you get a bike near a fan?

Good luck!!!!! I'm sure you'll do great.

Everyone gets 10 minutes for Transition from swim to bike, and 5 minutes from bike to run.  Good point on the "can you bike in wet clothes".  I just read through the instructions again and it only says "wear standard tri clothing"  "Towels for drying off after the swim." and "swim to bike transition is 10 minutes - the bike wave starts on time, use the transition time to adjust the bike as needed."

I'll probably have some electrolytes in my water.

Edited to say electrolytes (edurolytes was a typo)

Swim in whatever you're comfortable in.  Getting in and out of spandex when wet is a pain, if you can wear the tri clothes than go for it.

As far as nutrition you don't need anything.  Water or sports drink would be fine to drink.  In general I am VERY anti Hammer products.  If I were going to pop an electrolyte pill I'd go with S! Caps or Salt Stick Caps
