Good job on the races this weekend!

13 days until my first tri. I haven't registered yet, as I am still debating what category to sign up in: the regular sprint, sprint as an Athena, or first-timer's wave. My concern about the first-timer's wave is that it isn't really competitive, at least it says that on the website, and it starts after everyone else....I kind of want the competition to spur me on! Then Athena vs non-Athena? I don't know the pros and cons of doing that. Anybody have words about this?

RE-poops....wheat is also an irritant...maybe you should see if you are sensitive to that. Really pay attention to what you are eating in the hours/days prior to working out. Maybe even see a nutritionist or naturopath. It could just be nerves, but you'd have to be really nervous about running to have it every time. Hmmm.....

Fiber, people.

Try a bowl of oatmeal or a couple slices of whole wheat toast.  I don't know... you guys have me stumped on this one.

I don't know if Coach J has anything to say on this one... help me out here...

haha...I think I should start a log so that I can see if food affects it. Someone said something about the sun and hydration. That may be it...because it wasn't as bad when I ran the otherday in cloudy mild(80degrees) weather. Thanks for all the help!!

I'm thinking about trading my GI system for a new one....maybe that will help.

Let me know if you find a good deal! I might look into it, too. I did talk to a naturopath and have been taking a probiotic that has helped. I think food logging is annoying, but in this case, it really helped me!

>GI

Do you drink coffee? Or eat chocolate. That always makes my system run. and run. and run. It's horrible. I think for me it is a caffeine issue.

>Then Athena vs non-Athena?

Is there any way to find out how many people are registered in the race under each one? That way, you could register in the smaller group and statistically have a better chance at doing well within that group. (Placements and all)

God I'm a geek.

If all you want to do is finish, then it doesn't really matter. Just finish.

I would always do CLydesdale or Athena if it is available. Those people are going to be slower as a group just by the sheer physics of it. Plus I like to tell people that I strive to be the king of the "big boned" athletes....

Well, I registered for my triathlon(!!), non-Athena this time around. There aren't all that many people registered yet in general. And I think that while statistically I could place higher as an Athena I am having a hard time signing up for a weight category....always a sensitive issue for me. Plus, in my past as a competitive and "big boned" athlete, I could kick butt on just about anyone of any size. I kind of like the challenge. I may change my tune after my first attempt, though, if I decide that winning a group is fun stuff......hmmm!! In high school I'd always freak people out in track sprints, since they thought I'd putt.....and then zoom, I'd win! Let's see if I can capture that level once again.....it's been a while...(coupla decades, ugh. ) I will keep y'all posted. 12 days until the triathlon! I rode a huge hill today that has always intimidated me--no stopping me now!!

Medusa: You look like you could swing one hell of a softball bat.

Weight is such a BS measurement anyway. It really doesn't tell you anything unless it is WAY out of range (like if you were 400 pounds or something).

And even then, if you were a 6'8" Samoan man, 400 pounds might not be that far off.

< sidenote >
I actually knew a 6'8" Samoan man. His shoulders were literally 5 feet wide, and he didn't have much more than a little belly on him. He was a bouncer at a bar I frequented in my younger days. And all he had to do to break up a fight was tap the person on the shoulder, wait until they spun around and saw that he was WAY bigger than they were and then say "I'd like to take you to the door now."

Nobody ever said "no".

Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I am just a roller derby fan and supporter. I am way too old and don't know how to skate. If it had become popular around here 15 years ago, I would have done whatever it takes to be on a team. *big sigh* Whenever we watch, I get all mushy inside thinking what could have been. I am taking my 'coulda been a contender' angst out on triathlon.....

OK...I am going to buy a wetsuit because if I do, I'll HAVE to use it (thus keeping up this tri training as a "lifestyle" thing.)

What sort of fit do I need? How do I know if the wetsuit is a good fit for me?

Well, here's what my fitter told me.....if you can breathe in the dressing room, it's too loose.

 LOL

Seriously though, I basically took his advice, and ended up in a much smalle size than I would have bought on my own, and lo and behold, in the water it felt very comfortable. And I had no trouble getting out of it in T1.

I have a new gym!!!

Now I have no more excuses. Back to training...I have to admit, it is hard to get myself as motivated as I was before. I'm hoping that getting back into a routine will help, but I miss not having a training buddy. I've been hesitating to sign up for my next event, and I'm not sure what's holding me back. Did anyone feel a kind of letdown in motivation after they'd gotten past the hurtle of their first triathlon? If so what did you do to get back into it?

Also, I did a basic fitness assessment today as part of my "new gym member" package, and I was a little disappointed at some of the statistics. I thought I would be in better shape cardiovascularly and strengthwise. I guess I can look at it positively and just get better from here!

Tomorrow I go for another test to fine tune my HR zones for training. And working out a new training plan which will definitely include more strength training.

Can't wait to catch up with everyone!

Glad to see you're ready to get back to the training in Texas!

There's plenty of races down there.  You should just pick one and register.  That should get your motivation going again! Smile

I agree. I plan to always be signed up for something or else I will just drink beer and sleep late (Blue Moon on tap in the basement!)

FYI. There is now an Athena / Clydesdale forum on here for us bigger folks..

Looking at the Iron Girl this weekend. I think I will try to volunteer in the transition area.

What do the following mean?

"Minny du"
"Aquabike"

And what is Clydesdale? Is that for men?

Saw this on another discussion. I love it.

"The Strugglers know it will not be pretty. They know it is not a sure thing. They do not have the luxury of prediction or past performances or experience. This is not their aptitude. But this is their choice and their bold dream."

Hit "Control Panel" at the top left of this page.  About 2/3 of the way down that page, you'll see the option to add your own sig.

Duathlon is Run and Bike, could also be Run, Bike, Run

Aquabike is Swim & Bike.

Minny Du is likely a short Duathlon - probably in the Sprint Distance range (20 k bike and 5 k run).

You got Clydesdale right - that's men over 200(?) lbs.

The web usability of this site is HORRIBLE. I could go on ALL day about how it sucks. My business IS the Internet. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to web pages. If *I* can't figure out how to do something on a web site then you need help. BIG TIME.
