Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glenn - a few questions. What were distances in your tri? 600 calories is high I think but let's work through this.... describe for us your breakfast and then what else did you take in during the event? There are many times in shorter races that I don't take in a ton during the run - really just trying to cool down - think pouring water on your head or taking ice and putting it inside your hat and holding two handfuls until they melt - it gets hot in Texas. Did you feel bloated? Did you feel like there was fluid sloshing around in your gut? Did you pee during the race? How soon after the race did you pee? Gross question but important - how clear was your urine during the race and after? Are you a heavy sweater - I know - compared to what - but you probably know what I mean if you are..... |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Brian, This is my food intake at 5am (3hrs. pre race) the morning of my sprint tri. (750m/20k/5k). Calories Carbs Fat Protein
I actually saved the gatorade till one (1) hour before the race. I drank a 2nd gatorade during the bike portion. I also drank close to 12ozs of water before I couldn't take any more. As for sweating, I am an excessive sweater. During a hard 1 hr. workout i can lose a pound+ while drinking up to 24ozs of fluid. I also did feel like there was fluid sloshing around. As for urinating I can't recall, should of recorded it...rrr. As I am writing this I am trying a new App tool for my phone (Android) call Triathlon Calculator. The Event Caloric need calculates at 1422 cal., so I would need to ingest 696 cal. during the race. I could only get the gatorade down.... It probably explains why I ate like a fiend that evening..haha. So by looking at this I can see that I was in a calorie deficit in the first 5 mins. of the run..hmm. Anyways I hope this information helps and thank you in advance.

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glenn - that seems like a lot of food to me before a sprint. You probably didn't burn all that off and that is why you didn't need any calories. I think you were full. And that may have retarded your ability to even take in liquids. Were you sick or bloated? Upset stomach? Here is what I would do for your next sprint - 1/2 of that breakfast - so about 300 calories tops. Then the gatorade 1 hr out is fine. Then for a sprint you would only want about 100-200 calories during the event. A sprint is short enough that you shouldn't need to invoke the 200-250 calorie per hour rule of thumb. 200-250 per hour is good for a half iron or iron distance. I wouldn't even take in that many in an Olympic. Racing a bit on the calorie deficit side is ALWAYS better than having too many. On your next brick, or on your next sprint - reduce by at least half on the breakfast, drink the gatorade....then take in 100-200 more in either drink or gel and see how you do. You will be hungry after the race but I want to get you through the race feeling good. As far as the sweat rate, that is a lot - much like me. I want you to do a specific sweat test during the time of your race - in other words - a sweat test in 100 degree heat yields different results than one done at 70 degrees. So for a spring race - do a spring test in the early morning - here is the protocol - weigh naked and dry, workout for 1 hour and record all water consumed (water only), then dry off and weigh again naked. Record the numbers. During the 100+ summers we see here I sweat at about your stated rate. In the spring a bit less. For those in arid dry climates, you MUST do this test as your sweat dries so quickly you don't realize you are sweating. Glenn, last sweat question, after a 1 hour plus workout, are your clothes salty - white streaks? I would also like to hear from the rest of you on Glenn's All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet.... As a measure Glenn, for a sprint, I might eat 1/2 a bagel with peanut butter, maybe a half a banana (usually one or the other, rarely both) and then sip a sports drink until start time. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Who can get me a spot volunteering on the finish line in Ironman Texas, will be in Houston that weekend and would like to volunteer. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Billy - I would attend the volunteer meeting and just act as if you were signed up. They never check names in Arizona (or at least not to my knowledge). You should be able to get a gig. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys,Freaking out a little here....ok freaking out a lot.....my swimming has improved a lot. I tried a open water swim today for the first time. It was different to say the least. But here is what has me freaking out, after about fifty yards I felt a little off. Around 150 to 2OO was feeling a little worst. Felt like motion sickness. Swam a little more and had to head into shore. Getting out of the water and the next 20 minutes laying on a pcknick table praying for the motion sickness to go away. The water was as flat as can be. My 1st sprint is in 3 weeks. Is this normal? Anyone ever take motion sickness pills before an event??? Thankful to have you all to ask cause I feel pretty short bus material right now. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another finish line for me. Did Shamrock Shuffle 8K downtown Chicago with a couple of girlfriends. Finished in 55:59. The event was coded Yellow, it was really warm, but thank goodness, only 5 miles... very reminiscent of the Chicago Marathon weather this past October. Fun race and a fabulous time in the city with my girlfriends, and kid-free! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I only missed one workout and that was weights today. I finally got to take out the new bike and ride. I was hoping my cardio and legs would handle it but it turned out to be my rearend and neck that were sore. I rode the santa ana river bike path for my first ride. It was perfect since it was not on the street. I road 52 miles total in 3hrs and 4 min. I feel pretty good at the end of the a hard week. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary, good job ![]() Graham, I thought about you last night, but really wasn't sure what to suggest. Saying that maybe you just weren't used to OSW just didn't sound like that was it, so I didn't... and I couldn't think of anything else, I have never experienced it. I hope you try the earplugs and I hope they help... |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Graham, I'd bet it was a case of anxiety. An anxiety attack kinda builds on its self. Get back in the water and as soon as you start to feel it coming on , roll over on your back and float with a little frog kick for minute or two and see if it passes. Open water is definitely different. Good luck with your sprint! You'll get this licked. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone for the advice. I bought some earplugs after reading the link that was provided. I will let you know what happens next time I get in open water. Feeling defeated from the weekend event I swam 72 laps in the pool today at lunch. Thanks again |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! Been a bit MIA, work has been less than optimal for awhile and last night I accepted a position with another company. Really poured myself into my current company and product but it is time for me to leave. NOLA is this weekend and its going to be warm. Probably won't be wetsuit legal. Last year I would have freaked a little. This year its not a big deal. My time will be slower but I can deal with it. I am going to melt on the run. Had a great swim today, just doing ladders and towards the end I was swimming 1:42/100m! Mav and Billy can you believe that! I am not sure I do but triple checked it. Doubt I will get anywhere near that at NOLA but it is nice to know I am getting faster. Was reading an article in Lava about wetsuits and the catch phase of the stroke. Really hit home and concentrated on that. New bike is doing great, I got almost 47 miles in the other day and avgd 19.1 (fast for me). Using the Sheldon Brown site I figured out how to fix the shifting issue and it shifts great now. Take care all! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Graham - my diagnosis is also anxiety. I would say relax but you know that. Great advice from Rick - if it starts, immediately roll over and float, back stroke, etc.... Remember you have been swimming in a pool where you can see the bottom, you can see the wall, you can see your hand, etc...therefore, your brain can process all of that information. Now, you are in a murky environment at best, you cannot see much, if anything - therefore there can be some sensory deprivation that you have not experienced before. In the past, it has really only been hearing and breathing normally and taste but now you got the whole can't see thing working too. I think you will be fine -- believe --- relax ---have fun.... |
