Glenn- Glad to hear the training is going so good.

Graham--Great job on the race. Its all a learning experience.

Mark--Nice half. The hardest thing to teach my runners is to neg. split but it helps so much.

As far as my training its going good. Missed a swim workout this week because  the pool was full. Must be the start of tri season or something. I just looked back to 2009 when I was trying to get ready for a sprint tri and I had to rest after 250m. Now I can do 3000 without stopping. Of course its not fast but I can get it done.

My A race is in 8 weeks. My swim volume is good, run condition is good, the bike is my strength and I dedicated to working on longer distances when weather permits.  Physically, I'm ready for my first HIM.

Now is when I start to think about racing strategy.  In particular what do you think about the run?   At the 5k and 10k run distances of last years run leg, there was not much strategery, first - shake off the bike feet, then cruise along a bit to get the feel of the race, then turn it on, finish fast.

How much should I hold back?

Gotta go ride.  Cheers,

Gary - pretty funny dude....

I think I will have a blast trying to smack people with my paddle....

Fit - okay...here goes...Get out of the water with your heartrate in check....over all the swim is such a minor part a couple of minutes mean nothing.  Get in and out of transition....don't dawdle.....on the bike - ride under control....if you feel you could go faster, slow down a bit....if you feel good, slow down a bit....if you feel great, slow down a bit.  Ride the first 20 minutes or so drinking water and just cruising.....at the end of 20 minutes, start your nutrition and you can ramp it up a bit, BUT NOT TOO MUCH, after an hour, check in with your body - be sure you still feel great....if you do, don't speed up...keep doing what you are doing, if you feel any less than great, slow down....after the second hour, do the same check....finally after three hours, pull the same check, slow down just a bit anyway, and spin your way to the end.....now get off the bike and the run will be fun....or as much fun as it can be....get thru transition and get out on the run....the sooner you get after it, the sooner it ends.....however, I wast you to go REALLY slow for the first three miles....1 and a half to two minutes a mile slower than you think you should run.  Yes, give me 4:30-6:00 minutes and you will finish sooner, I promise.  From miles 3-9, cruise - yep, just cruise, at a pace about 30 seconds slower per mile than you feel you could run, and then in the last 4 miles - give it all you got....just GO.....gut it up and get it done....this is where you can flat out haul .....You will pass a ton of people in the last 6-7 miles while they are walking....keep count of the ones you pass....and celebrate those passings.  Don't overcook yourself on the bike.  There is no such thing as a great bike followed by a bad run - you gotta run....so only a great run can follow a great bike...otherwise you overcooked yourself on the bike....pace yourself...please....please....please enjoy this day, take it in, have a great race, on your next one - puke your guts out on the bike from over doing it but on this one - party around the course.....have a great day.....write "EXECUTE" on your arm

LRR, I know Fit asked the question, but I had the same one, since my first HIM is July 17, so THANK YOU for the insight!!! VERY helpful!!

Can we also talk about nutrition? I'm a big fan in Infinit (3 marathons on it and very happy), but I don't mind food either. Suggest away, everyone!

Fit, I agree with almost everything LRR said, with the exception of one thing.  He said you should slow down on the bike.

what he should have said was,

SLOW DOWN ON THE BIKE

My two favorite foods are uncrustables ( pre packaged peanut butter and jelly sandwiches) and gourmet jelly beans where you get a different flavor with every bite. Yum!!!!! The jelly beans give you something to chew without getting too full.

WHAT EVER YOU DO WITH FOOD .......PRACTICE IT BEFORE THE RACE.

Hey all!
Quick fly by here.  Raced a sprint today and took 3rd in my AG!  Also knocked off about 5 minutes from last years time.  Pics and RR later.  Lots of house stuff to do.

Fit - For my HIM's I have used: on the bike I used one bottle gatorade and one bottle Infinit.  Supplement with granola bars and Salt Capules (Mav recommended).  Depending upon the heat I will pick up a bottle from the course (assuming I like what they offer otherwise I bring another bottle of Infinit).  For the run, gatorade, Salt capsules, gel, and flat coke (but considering my 1/2 run times I am not sure I am the person to ask).

Enough messing around with the house.  My wife said, are you ever going to run again?  My son said, Dad, we haven't sold the other house yet, and when we do, you are going to hire people to finish the new house, so whats the rush?  Go ahead and start training for your HIM, I will help you on the house a little at a time.  Don't y'all wish you had a son like that?

So, I began the training yesterday, 25 miles on Carmen, its been a while but she felt good!

Any recommendations on bottle systems for the bike? Does anybody or can you wear a camel pack for races? I have been using bottles in my jersey but it seems like wasted energy to grab them and put them back. I have seen the ones on the aero bars. Those look nice. ANybody ever use them? How are they?

I have a profile design areo bottle between my clip ons.  It once flew off during intervals training.  Caught it and stuck inside my jersey.  The velcro attachment is weak.  Reinforced velcro with rubber bands.  Easy to drink in areo, Quick to fill.  Sometimes leaks out the top when hitting bumps.  I would buy another just the way it is.

I have a speed fill.  Mounts low, I like that.  Should have bought the insulation sleeve at the same time.  Easy to fill, doesn't leak.  I would buy another, but would wait until I found one used on BT!

Thanks I will have to check those out.    How about Tri shorts? Any better than others?  Has anybody ever wore compression tights over their tri shorts for a tri? I have worn them for my long runs and my last bike ride. I liked it and they kept me cooler. I wonder how it would be to race in them though.

THe tri club i was going to join is having an olympic tri on sat. I am thinking of doing it. I haven't swam in my wetsuit yet though and the lake is still cold.

I have tried several types of shorts, but, have always come back to the Desoto brand.  Currently, I wear the Desoto Forza 4pockets and love them.  If money wasn't and object, I would use the Desoto 400 mile shorts.  I have tried the Desoto Tri suits as well, but like the shorts and tops better.

Also, if you call Desoto fro information, you might actually get to speak to the owner for advice.  He is very hands on, name is Emilio.

RR is up:

As for shorts, I have an older pair of Orca's that I love.  I bought a newer pair but am not thrilled with the pad.  For bike shorts my Desoto 400 milers are the best.

As for bottles I have PD Aero bottle like Fit.  To go along with what he said: When I bought mine it did not come with the base mount, just rubberbands to use to attach it to the aero bars.  I highly recommend the mount.

One other tip that LRR gave awhile in this thread.  The straw that comes with it is solid and a pain.  So what I did (from his advice) was pick up to lengths of rubber tubing from a hardware store.  One that would fit snugly on the straw and another that would fit snugly inside the first tube.  Bought a couple of feet of both. Cut a section of both and mount on the straw.  Adjust the length of all three until it fits you perfectly in the Aero position.  If you cut too much from the tubing you will have lots of extra to redo. Once I found the right lengths I glued them the two rubber tubes together (but not to the straw).  Makes drinking a lot easier.  I will try to take a picture of my setup when I get a chance.

x2 - The PD straw is not easy to drink from.  I cut mine short enough that it stays out of the way.  I have to be down low to get a drink.  Climbing mountains, when I'm finally forced to come off the saddle and start dancing on the pedals, the straw stabs me in the chest.  I'm interested in what Gary did with flexible rubber hose.

Cheers

thanks for the advice.

I swam for a few minutes in my wetsuit today for the first time. Felt good except around the neck. I have never floated before so that was a weird experience. Looks like am going to do the olympic tri on sat I just hope the tight neck doesn't restrict the blood flow to my head. Since this wasn't planned I am trying to figure out how to rearrange my training schedule. What do you guys think?

Fri  am 3000 worth swimming   pm 1hr run with 7.5 min of Z4 running.

Sat 4hr bike with 5 min z4 and then 30min run

Sun bike 45 min @100rpm then run 1hr 1/2 Z2

So I was thinking

Fri. am 1500 easy swim  pm 1hr run

Sat race

Sun 4 hr bike ride easy.

Also any advice for this race?

For the PD Aero bottle straw setup. You keep the firm base straw so it goes firm to the bottom of the bottle. Then you use flexible tubing as the drink part. You might Ned two sizes to get out of the bottle and then have an appropriate size to drink from. The floppy straw doesn't poke you in the chest or the eye and it also hides behind the bottle. I cut my length such that I can keep it in my mouth if I want.

Having a great time at IMTX. Was the kayak with the last swimmer. The first swimmer I escorted wanted to quit several times. I wouldn't let him. He finished the swim with about 4 minutes to spare. About halfway thru his swim, he caught and passed a swimmer so I moved to the other swimmer. I was with her - pushing - coaching - trying to get her there. We were a few hundred yards out when time expired. She hung on my kayak, cried and said "Next Year". A tough moment but really cool. Billy spotted me trying to get her in. There were about a half dozen folks who didn't make the time cutoff.

A couple other things on the bottle. I cut firm straw down in the bottle so the only thing out the top is the floppy tube. And my tubing is MUCH more flexible than that in the pic. But that is preference.
