I really have no idea Jen, but would think yoga is more beneficial if you tend to have any muscle tightness.  ST - depends on who you talk to.  If you don't have time for both I'd go with yoga, but that's just me.  I don't have time for either (or don't want to make the time really) but if I did I'd pick yoga.

My hamstrings are so tight and sore, I really feel like I've traumatized them.  I thought it was just from Wisconsin and then sitting in a car all the next day driving home.  But it really started to bother me badly when I started doing that circuit class.  So I think the high stepping we did stretched already tight hamstrings too much.  It gets so bad on the right side, when I'm sitting the pain radiates all down my leg, on the back but towards the outside, and into my outer ankle.  It's killing me.  I was walking around like a 90 year old on Sunday so I took an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer AND heavy duty pain killer (my left over stash from the herniated disc earlier this year).  It seems to have helped some, so there must be some swelling, pinching of some sort in there.  Any ideas on what it is and how I can make it go away???

ok...way, way sore from the yoga.  I had no idea 44 minutes would kick my a** like that.  No lifting for me tonight.  I really liked doing it though.

Do you think it would be more beneficial to do the yoga twice a week, or ST legs at the gym twice a week?  I like the yoga better, but I want to make sure my acitivity makes me a stronger triathlete, because like all of you, I'm time crunched as it is.

**edited to add that I can't do both.  No time.

Yoga - don't do witchy voodoo yoga. Do hard core power yoga. If you are spending your time breathing and chanting, that's great, but it isn't going to get you what you want. In my mind yoga is one of the best exercise regimes out there if you have the time to do it and you find good instructors

Jen I'd do the yoga.  It will hit your stabilizing muscles.  You'll get core work out of it.  It will keep you loose and stretched out.  It will address some of your imbalances and you can incorporate other ways doing s/b/r to increase power/strength and address the imbalances there too.  Plus with kids it just evens out my temprement.

I vote yoga as well.  The other thing to think about is doing something like a TRX program.  The TRX is not too expensive and its good body weight stregnth training that you do at home.  I've been doing TRX for the last month or so and really like it.

Does it feel like a strain?  How much time did you take off after Wisconsin?

Had to google TRX.  I saw that at my gym and wondered what the heck it was (with the suspension bands and stuff).  Cool!  I can't afford the equipment though.  My husband would kill me.

Ok, I'll keep the yoga.  No chanty voodoo here.  I want a workout, and I want to sweat.

Does it feel like a strain?  How much time did you take off after Wisconsin?

It's hard to describe, but it feels like muscle.  Although pain down to the ankle I think indicates nerve.

I really took no time off - which was not smart.  I'm not putting in 17+ hours a week anymore, but still do something most days.  Hoping a few more days of the anti-inflammatory will make it go away.  And stretching, although I'm not sure if that's making it worse.

I think since you resorted to taking the painkiller, you probably ought to rest it a bit more.  Ice and rest.  Maybe if you give it some time, then it will just go away!

Tapering sucks.  My workout felt like a warm up.  Undecided  Off day tomorrow.  Hopefully a short 10-15 minute swim/run Friday and then we're off to Austin Saturday morning.

The tapering is so hard, but you'll be thankful you did it right on race day!  Do you have your bib # so we can track you?

So I started swimming for the first time again since June!!!   Boy did that workout kick my and it was only about 1200 yards, ha, ha.  I joined the pre-team this year instead of the regular team.  On our masters you have to learn ALL strokes and they do alot of yards.  I suck at the breast and just plain don't do the fly right!  So I opted to drop back and learn the strokes instead of struggle with yards on strokes I don't know.  Alot less stressful!

So our coach last night made us to corkscrew drills ... I don't think I  have ever done one, bu we did about 100 yards of it last night and I was dizzy, dizzy, dizzy (we stopped after each 25).  I finally got the rhythm in the last 25, ha, ha and could breath ...

Have you guys done corkscrews?  What are they meant to teach?  Control?  rolling your body?

Good for you for getting back in the pool!  It feels great; doesn't it?!  Not sure about the corkscrews.

Just curious....how much time do you spend on other strokes during a traditional master's swim class?  Free and fly are fine, and backstroke was my thing during my younger years, but breaststroke....ack!  It's pitiful.  It would suck to join a team and have to do a bunch of breaststroke.  LOL

I like TRX a lot.  Why no stregnth training can be completely tri specific, you can get pretty close with the TRX.  Plus its compact and even with my complete lack of technical know how I can put it up and take it down without Shaun's help.

i've never understood why people dont like tapering.  I love doing nothing - remember that line from the movie "office space", i agree.  I hate working out.  I sign up for race to force myself to train so that i can eat and drink crap and not weigh 400 pounds.  I hate swimming, I hate running and i REALLY REALLY REALLY hate biking.

I like sitting on my duff, watching football, eating crap and drinking beer and being left alone.  sadly said endeavors are rarely recognized.

Jay had me do those the first time in the pool. He said it helps reinforce where on your arm you feel the pull...or something like that.

I thought the corkscrew drill worked on rotation with it's focus on using your core and hips as the primary movers.

This masters team is a competitve team in the offseason, so they go and swim meets and anyone can do it.  So everyone, I mean EVERYONE learns every stroke.  You proably still do free the most, but you will do all other strokes equally.  AND you have to learn all the turns too.

Our team has about 70-80 people for 8 lanes, so thankfully not everyone always shows up, but when most did, it was crazy!!!  Most of the team is triathletes and most of their coaches preach doing all the strokes for better full body conditioning.  I suck at the breakstroke and if I do too much, I can get some shin pain (while also running).  In any one regular team swim, you could do 3000-5000 yards (depending on lane) and after the warm up, you will do alot of drills, then will do alot of IMs (fly, breast, back, free).  Some nights will be alot of speed, and more free.  She really mixes it up alot.  In a given night you could do 40% free, then the rest is mixed other strokes.
