elcaminobill - 2011-06-24 5:18 PM Gary, i will go online and sign up right quick, only problem is, I am leaving in 30 minutes to go to the mission in Belize and will be gone until the 4th of July.  I guess that will give My Little Ruskie time to get a head start, she will need it!

Awesome! Travel safe my friend!

Gary, there will be another time for a full.  You definitely want to be committed and have the time to train properly.  Good choice

Hey All,

Got another race to report.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=258223

Total 180 from the previous race.  Followed my mentor's and coach's advice this time.  NOTHING NEW on race day, warm up properly, and don't sprint the swim..lol.

Went so smooth in fact I was able to come in 3rd place and receive my very first triathlon medal. Yay!  It was my lucky day for sure as I even won a Timex Ironman Watch as a door prize..was the last name chosen.

Anyways got a couple more weeks then I'm doing the Warrior Dash followed by another Give-it-a-Tri a week later.  Well better get back to training.

TTYL,

Glenn

Edit: added a couple of photos my son took..

oh Billy. *insert obligatory Billy Trash Talk* You can certainly talk loud, my friend... let's see your riding action! I may not be as fast as you (ok, I know I'm not), but I'll give you your money's (ok, Gary's money) worth in this little competition.. so get ready! *end insert*

Hey peeps... I need some HIM advice.... I'm copying some of this from my training log..

So, a little background on this weekend. Did a 20 mile run yesterday with my Galloway group (our Chicago Marathon training), and knew I'd be tired today to go ride and run, but figured, it is what it is, I have to be able to train on tired legs. The ride was good today! I was worried about my legs, and mainly, knees, after a 20 miler yesterday, so last night, I wore my CW-X compression tights to bed and by 8 am this morning, when I got on the bike, legs were surprisingly ok! Most of the ride was good, a lot fewer "oh crap" (or worse) moments while climbing the hills, so progress is good.

Run was ..well, a brick. Or maybe like a pile of bricks. I wanted to do 5, but thought about it some and decided that 3 was enough of a brick for the workout purposes (and trust me, it was!), and my knees could use a little break after yesterday's run. So I cut out of Barrington Hills after 3 miles.

One thing that is weird... And that is what I need help with... (just so you know, 56 is a new long distance for me. Before then, my longest ride this summer was 19 miles, and before this summer, 25 at an oly, so I dont' have a ton of experience piling on bike miles, an I wonder if what I'm describing below is part of the issue?):

last week, my hands twitched for 2 days after the 56 miles. Like, visibly. I would hold my hand still and see muscles twitching and fingers shaking, each at their own pace. Very weird. Now, this week, a different gig with the fingers. By mile 35-40, I could hardly use my left thumb to downshift. It was as if the muscles just didn't want to obey. By mile 40, I was having to just wrap my fingers around to downshift (which made things awkward, needless to say), and had to use fisted knucles to shift back up. No issues like that on the right hand. By mile 50, even opening Hammer gel was comical. The rest of the afternoon has been the same-washing dishes, holding a small baby plate of Lukas' food-in the right hand, a problem. Is that a typical side effect of a long ride (I googled it and people seem to refer to Cyclist Palsy and say it's a normal thing?)... or maybe not enough salt? Here is my nutrition breakdown for the workout today (exactly same as last week, when I did 56 and a 5 mile brick):

Ride:
1 bottle of Infinit (had to use the Speedwork formula, cause that's all i have left, it has more caffeine than regular run)
1 Hammer Apple Cinnamon gel
(I stopped 2.5 hrs into it for a break and to get my other 2 bottles and gels and was going for 30 min without any nutrition and really felt it.. my body felt shaky and empty, fuel-wise, so I scarfed down some Graham crackers I found in the car lol)

Run:
Infinit.

Stomach felt fine on the ride and run, 'cept the twitching and muscles refusing to work. Anybody know what's going on and how I can fix it? ANY input is much appreciated!!

Still guessing but I would probably bet you are spending more time on the hoods then on the aerobars.  If so, go back to your fitter and discuss what you are experiencing.  My guess is that you are compressing a nerve or something similar (Mav can probably better explain) causing the issue.  I don't know how a fitter would fix this but a qualified fitter should.

One cavaet, I don't pretend to be an expert on this and I could be way off but double checking with your fitter is never a bad idea.

One more thing, on your next ride try using gloves, may be padded riding gloves and see if the issue returns.

Hi Lena,

When you're riding long distance lots of small shocks come up through the handle bars and into your shoulders when you're down on the areo bars.  When you're on the hoods your wrists and elbow act as dynamic shock absorbers and flex hundreds of times without conscience thought.  For this reason it's real important to ride with your hands and elbows relaxed.  If you are riding on the hoods with the palms of your hands flat the nerve and tendons of the wrist get hammered and will cause all kinds of nasty inflamation and deferred pain.  This is aggrevated as you become tired.  As the core and arm muscles become fatigued, the tendancy is to lock the elbows.  This focuses all the shock absorbing forces onto  the wrist which is relatively weak and vulnerable to repetative stress injury.

The solution is to ride with your hands rotated so that your thumbs are pointed up.  In this position the hands move without applying compression pressure to the carpel tunnel nerve bundle.  The most comfortable place to rest your hands is right along the life line on your palm, with the meaty part of the thumb doing all the work.  The better riding gloves will have a gap in the palm padding that makes a small shelf you can rest your thumbs on.  With good gloves, you will find it is much easier to hold onto the bars.

Cheers,

I'm definitely spending more time on the hoods.. i can be in the aero position for 5-7 minutes, but feel the arms and shoulders and back get tense enough that i have to change position. It still breaks up the ride, and i just figured that's what you get with a road bike, since you can't roll your body forward like you would on a tri bike... but maybe the bit needs to be tweaked?

I don't have biking gloves, might look at some. Sort of all spent out on tri stuff for now lol

Wow, Mark, quite some knowledge! I'm impressed. Thanks for the advice, I'll try to keep it in mind.. and definitely will look for the right gloves when the time comes that I can purchase them.. thanks again!

Lyoshka - 2011-06-17 6:20 PM Gary, I'm in!!!!!!!!! Sounds like a lot of fun!!! So, just to clarify... the competition goes for 2 weeks? And only outdoor rides count, hence the GPS logging. yes? We compete against each other on the team? And each stage is how long? a week? that jersey is sweet-looking! The fee is $49.95 per team, do we just split that and paypal you? Am I missing anything else? how many from your mentor group are interested?

Sounds just about right!  As for the money, I covered it with the expectation that when we get to meet in person you can buy the first round or two.

So just PM me your email address and I will send an invite.

Absolutely!!! Couple of rounds on me!! whohoo!

Lena,

Hey Mark knows his stuff.  Makes a lot of sense what he is saying!  Reading your post made me remember that when I first started on a road bike I would get the tingly sensation in my hands.  Sometimes I'd have to shake my arms while riding.  But I've never had issues with my hands on my tri bikes.  And I do know the more relaxed you ride the less tension you feel.  Maybe your bars need just a little tweaking.  I'd go for the gloves and Mark's advice on the position to best rest your hands.  Sounds like you have your nutrition nailed in.  Things are looking good for you girl!

I did get in another finish line.  It was a 5k I did with my brother and brother in law.  Bad day for me...my time wasn't great and I puked at the end.  I was like Woo Hoo...what a way to end a race!  My brother was impressed (with my puking!) LOL   I did get 3rd in my AG...but the field was very small.  My brother got 2nd in his AG and my brother in law got nothing!  LOL Also there was a raffle at the end and my brother and I both won a prize but my brother in law didn't.  It just wasn't his day.....but we had soooo much fun teasing him!!  It was all in fun!

Lena - I will also weigh in here with nothing new.  Take your bike back to the fitter and explain what you are feeling and show him/her where it is concentrated.  Show them how you are riding on the goods.  I am thinking you are locking your elbows and tensing the wrists, but it could be a very minor fit issue.

One other trick - Amy said to shake our your arms....do it about every 15 minutes...DO NOT WAIT until it begins to tingle....do it early and often.

I also don't think you took in enough nutrition on your 56 mile ride....what is your target amount of calories per hour?  How many did you take in on that ride?

Gloves would definitely help on the ride.  See if you can borrow some....I understand the money but you have a lot of $ and time already in this deal.

GLENN - Rock n Roll buddy - GREAT JOB....and a PODIUM....wow!!!!

oh yeah, hey Amy good podium too...how many in your AG?  I am taking up for your bro-in-law....haha

Glenn and Amy good job.

All races are just learning experiences.

LR --I would never change things up on purpose on a race that mattered for me. The truth is you never really know if something works until you are in a race.

I havd a crazy last week and half. The night before I left for the family reunion I got food posioning and was up most of the night. Couldnt eat much the next day. I took off tues& wed. Ran hr thur, bike hr fri., hilly hr bike sat., sun day hr spin and hr run slow. Really felt weak. Took mon-wed off. Hey all, been away from here for a while but very busy.  I have done two Tri's now and cant get enough.  Another Tri in a couple weeks.  I am about to hit a major goal too.  Just a few more pounds I will no longer be a clydesdale!!!!!  This is major for me.  I was 278 when I started this venture about a year ago.

On another note, I just bought some new shoes.  I got the Brooks Ghost 4.  BEST SHOE EVER....  I have about 30 miles on them and I love them....  I wanted to pass that along to you all since you have provided so much helpful information to me.

Take care everyone.

Graham - soon to be CNM (clyde no more)  Awesome.  Great Job!!!  Keep up the good work.

Phil - I appreciate what you are saying = and am glad you would never change anything intentionally.  This is what we mean - quite often I see people buy shoes in an expo and race in them the next day = or they use a wetsuit for the first time ever (and usually put it on backwards) = or they change their nutrition at the Expo because that is what the pro in the pro roundtable said they did.  What we mean is that you race like you train, wearing what you wear, riding what you ride.  Can you imagine if those new tri shorts started chaffing in the swim, continued on the ride...and then oozed blood throughout the run?  I think NOT.  BUT - THERE IS A BIG BUT HERE - BUT should you find yourself in a race and cannot execute according to your plan - you must adapt and improvise...just do it thoughtfully.  Especially when you start really going long, the mind plays tricks on you and makes you think crazy thoughts.  Use your head.  Use your brain.  You have to to be able to adapt BUT you don't want to take too many risks.  Be smart.  Race your race - only adapt what MUST be adapted.  That's what we mean by nothing new on race day.  There is a difference between adapting and intentionally using something new.  Any questions specifically, let me know.

MAV - did you get the bike pics?  Since I don't know how to post them, I sent them to MAV for her to post.

Billy NOOOOOO!  Tendonitis sucks.  Doctors ... suck!  Nurses ... are ok.
What are you going to do?  Angry tendons can be very difficult to calm.  Find a way to break the pain causes inflamation causes pain cycle?  Please keep us informed and get well soon.
