Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today went ok. Learned a lot. The swim was in a lake with wakeboards near by, Bike and run were hilly. Woke up at 4am to eat. Had 2 packets of oatmeal, bananna, power bar, bottle of water and gatorade. 1 Roctane packet just before race. ~800 cal. Swim 53:37 plus .02mile transition swim :52 T1 3:39 Bike 3:10.16 56.32miles Did a loop just over 14 miles. Heart beat ave 142bpm only 2 mile splits with above my range. I drank a most of a bottle of gatorade and a bottle of water on the first loop plus a roctane and stopped to refill and take a natural. Also stopped at the end of loop 3 for the same. Also took a roctane every 45min and had one power bar. T2 3:02 Run 1:53.48 HR ave 166bpm. Did not take on enough calories on the run. Roctan every 45min and one powerbar and only 1/4 of gatorade and 1 1/2bottle of water. The whole run was done out of my HR zone. Kept it close for the first 5 miles. Then with all the hills it was too hard. I need to come up with a better fueling plan. I am planning on infinat for the bike but not sure what to do for the run yet. I hate to carry anything while running but I might have to do it. Swim i need to relax more and try and not let things get me out of rythmn. Some of the waves would throw me around. Bike as good as I could do without getting in better shape. Felt good the whole time. only thing is switch to infanit. Run Get more calories and run in HR ZOne for longer which should be easier because the race course will be much flatter. transitions will be totally different but todays went great except my inner thighs started to cramp after the swim. still having problems with this only on or right after the swim not on the bike or run and advise? I think I may try my doctor. Edit....After I finished this I started cramping so I decided to try the GU Brew and that cleared them right up. Edited by phildampier 2011-07-11 12:36 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great job, both of you guys. Looking forward to the report! Did my first tri of the season this weekend, but dnf'd. Swam hard, biked fast but let the run go due to the tendon issue. Wasnt hurting bad but still had a twinge. Did run last night, 4 miles, no problem. Maybe I am ready to go now? |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team LRR, I've got another finish line to as well to submit although it wasn't a triathlon. I competed in the Warrior Dash here in Barrie, Ontario this past Saturday. Placed 63/447 AG and 1100/9813 OA. This event was a tremendously fun race and I would recommend grabbing a bunch of friends and making a day of it. The Swag was pretty cool, the live music had the feel of a festival concert and the Ginormus turkey legs were delicious. The only downfall to the whole thing was the hills. OH GAWD THE HILLS... The race was up the one side of a ski resort and back down. No amount of treadmill running or treks along the beach could of prepared me for that. I guess the adage "If you want to get better at hills you gotta train hills" really applies. I am grateful for that because now I'ma gonna add hill climbs into my running training and I'll be better overall.. Anyways gotta another race this weekend in beautiful Gravenhurst, Ontario. I understand that the swim start is a 6ft. dive off an riverboat..should be cool. I'll post an update when I can. TTYL Glenn |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Gary and LRR, i think you guys were the ones posting about the Aquacell and tubing... I can't find the post, and the search feature is less than helpful. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before I go cut the white straws that came with the Aquacell and then regret it. I went to Home Depot and got 1/4" tubing that fits perfectly inside the white straw.. let me test my understanding of what I should do, before I do it..... So, I should cut the white (unbendable) straws that came with the bottle down to below surface level, just so they stay inside the bottle, then insert tubing so all I see coming out of the bottle is the clear tubing. Yes? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm 4 days away from my first Half-Ironman. Freaking out just a little, but mainly, just excited. I have to trust my training at this point and trust my body will get me through a very hot day.. Supposed to be 92 feeling like 102, yikes. And I'm in the 4th to last wave, and not a fast racer... so it'll be hot, I sure hope they do not run out of water and ice. I finally have the wetsuit stuff sorted out (trisports kept messing up my order), swam in the lake twice in it now and it is a DREAM! LOVE it!!! Also tested my neoprene cap yesterday, as well as new goggles.. all good. Only problem with the new goggles (Aquasphere) is they fog up. Tried the spit, doesn't help. Any suggestions? my old BlueSeventies didn't fog up at all.. hmm... Ready for race day and can't wait to put that proud magnet on my car ![]() |

Yes? No, with my Profile Design I didn't cut it all the way down. I think mine rides higher than LRR's but I think its a personal setup based upon how you are fitted on your bike. My recommendation would be to put the two-piece tubing on your straw uncut. Then, cut the straw and the tubing to fit you. Its easier to replace the tubing so cut that first. One note I initially put my bike on the trainer and did the initial cuts but left it a little long. Then the next couple of rides I continued to adjust. Hope this helps. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary and Phil, thanks.. I *think* I understand... I decided, however, for now, just to leave it alone. I'm bringing the AquaCell with me to Racine and will just drink from it how it came. Obviously, it's still useable, though maybe not perfect... and I don't have time to mess with it now, given how i"m not riding anymore till race day.. so I will do the tubing bit next week. For now, will just deal with it.. I may ask you to post pics of how yours looks..... Mark, thank you! I"m a little nervous, but feel like I should be more nervous? so it's a good thing.. honestly, my only plan is to survive it and enjoy the journey. It's going to be 92 degrees (feeling like 102), I'm in the 4th to last wave and a slow racer, so it'll be a brutal day, but hey, i'm there to enjoy it and to finish within time limits, thassit. I have trained, I am prepared, now is the time to just focus on one leg at a time and enjoy it. I know I can do it, and post-race celebration will be sweet! (if I'm awake for it). So i'm actually pretty zen about the whole thing. Huh. Weird. But I'll take it. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Friends, Question, I have done several road tri's on my 29er mountian bike and am wondering how I would like doing them on a road bike. So the question is, do bike shops ever rent road bikes? I would like to give one a tri (haha) before investing in one. I dont really know anyone well enough to ask to borrow one. Plus I know I really would not want to lend my bike out and I am sure others feel the same.
THanks |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lena...Enjoy every minute of the big day!! You will do awesome Sunday!! I know you will love it! I got another finish line. I did Muncie 70.3 last weekend. I knocked 25 minutes off my swim time from last year!! Ha that shows how terrible I swam last year! My overall time wasn't great. I hated the headwind on the bike and duh...I let my head get the best of me. I felt defeated and was thinking I was THE slowest biker. Got off the bike and walked a lot on the run cus I was totally bummed. Usually I write things on my hands or arms to read and think about when I get down...this time I didn't do that. Also I usually have a plan in my head of things I will think or do if my attitude starts to suck...but this time ...I didn't do that. Soooo lesson learned....prepare the head as well as the body! Anyway I finished and my time was better than last years time...AND I was not the slowest biker! Not that it really matters anyway. Now I just gotta keep my head on straight LOL and continue getting ready for IMKY!!! |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did my 3rd tri ever today. The swim on the first one I can only say was all about survival. Never got a second of anything other then a crazy side stroke. 2nd tri I again could not get my face in the water. Couldn't explain it but all I could do was backstroke. Seemed crazy cause I can swim for days in the pool but OWS (only tried it at these first two tri's) I could not get my face in the water for even a few seconds (yhea I know I am wierd) Today was my third tri. I got there early so I could get in the water. I have never done that before. So, I got in the water and floated around a while. Stuck my head in the water a few times. Did a little test swims and felt just like I was in the pool. So I did a little more warm up until my wave was called. My wave was called and my son asked me to start at the front of it with him (16-39 wave). I thought it was only fair as he started in the back at the last tri at my request. The horn sounded and we ran into the water. I immediately got into a freestyle stroke and fell right into a pace that felt great. Need less to say I swam (freestyle) the entire 500 yard swim. I felt so good I even swam until I was in water only about 2 feet deep as I exited the swim. I have read here a million times to warm up before the swim. Today was the first time I did that and the results were great. It got me settled and calm in the water. I also shaved 4 minutes off my time from the same course a month ago. I don't have any splits but I am sure it came from the swim. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Luck Lena!!! You will great!!! Amy Good job on the swim. You improved and learned lessons!!!!! Graham Great Job!!!! I never warm up on the swim because I hate cold water and it will get in my head if I have to get out and then wait. That was a smart thing you did though because even though you aren't suppose to try new things on race day but when what you were doing hasn't worked then its time to try a something new. 5 hour bike ride today and then hour run.....Tried the new gatorade pro recovery(the big expensive one) As I finished it I decided to read the box and it say drink half then two hours later drink the other half... ooops. I Seem to have handled it fine. I hope it helps me with my hour bike and 2hr 15min run tomorrow. Anybody use the infinit recovery drink? I ordered my own blend of bike and run but passed on the recovery. It should have made it today but its not here. Hope its here monday. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here is a quick recap of my first Half-Ironman today: I finished, however do not have an official time.. here's what happened. Swim was fabulous, then the bike came... Racine's fabulous roads plus this insane heat made for an interesting day. At mile 24, my tire blew out (yes, tire, not tube).. The tire went with a LOUD pop and looked shredded by the time I stopped. I fully expected to go flying, but surprisingly, was ok. I thought I was done, but was told there was a girl on a moped driving around with tires and bike parts. Given the choice of either throwing in the towel and going home and finishing whatever it took, and possibly not getting a time, the decision was easy.... I just couldn't go home with a DNF and nothing else, it would have been gut-wrenching. So i told the volunteer that I'm staying until the tire comes, no matter how long it took. Waited an HOUR-in the blistering heat, no shade, no water, finished 32 miles with a police office patroling so i wouldn't get lost. By the time I got to transition area, two things were happening simultaneously: the volunteers were going nuts yelling, "You are a hero! You made it!!!!!!" and the race official saying, "im sorry you didn't made the bike cutoff. I'll take your timing chip now" (i think i missed it by about 15 min?). I told him I'm running anyway, because I wanted to finish the race. The run was out and back, out and back. Everybody was on the second loop by the time I started, so constantly hearing, "you are almost done!!" didn't help. seeing the inflatable Ironman finish arch and knowing I won't go through it officially was brutal. Brutal heat, VERY difficult day, both physically and emotionally, but I did finish. By the time I was done, the arch was almost dismantled, so I ran through the metal carcass. I DID finish, right? It was a tough day. I feel that I did the best I could given my options today. My goal was Just To Finish, and well.. I did finish. Next time I'll be more specific about the finish time, eh? I will definitely write a race report and will post it later... for now, some sleep.... |
