Subject: RE: Michael Phelps' not such a Golden Boy anymore?"Athletic ability does NOT equal good person! In fact in a lot of cases, they seem to be inversely related! LOL! I really think this is something very unhealthy about our society.... that celebrity=role model. Want a role model? Fathers and mothers are good candidates for role models.... teachers, superiors at work, clergy members, your friends. Not frickin' swimmers, baseball or basketball players, nor actors, singers or other public figures!!!" Thank you Kim. That is my point EXACTLY It's OK to stop reading now........ (rant)I grew up as a bit of a geek harassed by jocks in school. I NEVER saw ANY athelete as a "role model", rather as bullies who through happenstance found a socially acceptable way to channel their agression. Thanks to the NBA and NFL and MLB I am as often as not confirms in my suspicion. You want role models, look to science, look to education, look for justice. Look for people doing things for others in soup kitchens, and street-front churches. Those are the front lines of our battle to redeem ourselves as humans. Sports provide relief, and inspiring moments to be sure, and the occasional heroic performance, but the day-in-day-out heavy lifting is done out of the glare of cameras and the shrill shouting locker room atmosphere of freaking sportscenter (rant off) Edited by ride_like_u_stole_it 2004-11-19 8:34 AM
