the one about the rats and mice that was made into a movie, I think.  I believe there was a "Mrs." in the title.  He loved that one.

The Rats of NIMH (aka Mrs Frisby (sp?) and the Rats of NIMH)?  I loved that book.

Another not to forget it The Phantom Tollbooth.  Maybe better in another yr or two in order to understand the double entendre but that was another of my favorites.

Another thank you for all the suggestions.  My 6 yo son is has only 1 more book in the Magic Treehouse series and we were also wondering where to go next.

THAT'S the one! Thank you!  You truly are a Mighty Mom!

Anyone have any good chapter book recommendations for 1st/2nd/3rd grader?  A series would be great.  We've been through the Diary of a Whimpy Kids and the Magic Tree House series.  The boy is 6yo - too young for Harry Potter (I haven't read them)?  Thanks.

I would check to see if the school is involved in any reading programs that are aligned to specific reading programs.... Accelerated Reader, Scholastic, etc.

My kids are in the younger grades, but my son is getting into chapter books (He is 6 and getting into the Magic Treehouse series... don't know anything about it yet.)

These programs have recommended reading lists that are in alignment and support the reading lessons that they are trying to reinforce (oversimplification, but work with me here).

My boys both hit chapter books early...

Lots of good books mentioned already, but also The Guardians of GaHoole is what my six year old is reading right now.

The 39 Clues really captured my oldest's attention (and ours as well). We read the series along with him so we could discuss things with him.. although I think he was maybe seven when he started reading those. They have a rotation of authors but was spear headed by Rick Riordan... the Percy Jackson guy... which has some material that is meant more for slightly older kids. But my 9-year old has read through all of those books and the Lost Hero books and the Egyptian ones as well.

Good luck! Keeping an advanced reader in age-appropriate material is tough.
