I think it was a nice way to set up and segue the series. Remember, it started as a re-boot - we had the same M as the Brosnan Bond, but it was as if there was no Bond. They used the original book (Casino Royale), and took from the brutal asocial Bond with few human attachments (and the one woman he ever loved turns out to be a traitor, and then dies - true to the books). We get to bring in Moneypenny, with enough of a backstory that we can see the history between her and Bond that leads to the banter they will have in the future. I have heard that theory before that Bond is also a code name - it was actually the plot of the first Casino Royale movie - which was a comedy where Bond tries to confuse the villians by having a bunch of Bonds running around. But I don't believe it. There is a series of code names - M, Q, the 00 series of agents. No need to have names. Took me forever to figure this out: M and Q are not code names - that's their position: minister and quartermaster.
There's a reference in the last movie, Quantum of Solace, where Bond says something like, "I always thought 'M' was short for 'minister'. I never realized it was short for..." And M cuts him off before he says what sounds like was going to be her real name. Then in Skyfall, he introduces her as "M" to Kinkade (the gamekeeper at Skyfall house ) and Kinkade says "Pleased to meet you Emma" but M doesn't correct him. Is she just being polite, or is the subtle reference in both movies that her name is actually, coincidentally, "Emma"?
I read a few weeks ago that Craig had signed on for two more movies, so he'll be back. I think he's been a great Bond. It's hard to put anyone ahead of Connery, but Craig's making a run. |
