Hmmm...I teach this in my motorcycle class and it applies to the bicycles as well.... Never....NEVER hit the brakes in a swerve. It results in a cartwheeled bike....motorized or not. My dad just learned that lesson on his bicycle trying to avoid a construction barrel. Keep the upper body independant of the swerve and don't hit the brakes until the bike is straightened back out. Maybe not a lesson for you, since it is learned already, but for a newbie....

Yeah, I kinda new that and wouldn't do it on purpose ... but for some reason this happened so quickly that I just reacted. I think it was a combination of not knowing what to do, swerve or hit the brakes and hope to stop in time ... and so I just reacted and did both at the same time.

It happened so quick that I didn't even have time to throw my hands out in front of me as I was going down.

My kids were watching and told me that as my face hit the road, my arms were still by my sides, my feet were up over my shoulders, I hit the pavement, kinda bounced back up, came down a second time and slid about a foot, and then settled down and laid there about 15 seconds before getting up.

I remember thinking, "this is going to hurt" and that is all I had time for ... when I came to and got back up my kids tell me that this is all I kept mumbling to myself ... "Damn this sh t hurts ..."

I was hit once nearly 20 years ago. I was riding my bike to work in Harrisburg, and somebody turned across 3 lanes to make a left turn from the middle of the street to get to a parking lot. I flew over his windshield, so I KNOW he had to see me. A$$hole just pulled into the lot without stopping. I got up, found my bike with the pretzeled front wheel, and tried to figure out who had hit me, but no one came to the front (what did he think, he hit a deer in the middle of downtown????), and I couldn't ID the car. Fortunately I was only a block or two from work, so I walked in, cleaned up, and then called a cab at lunch to get to the LBS to get the wheel repaired and a new helmet.

It was an suv. I was clipping along nicely (45 km/h) on a stretch of highway and an suv driver thought he had time to turn left in front of me. He didn't. He clipped the back of my bicycle and sent me flying about 30 feet into a pressure treated 4x4 stop sign post. He said I shouldn't have been going so fast because then he'd have had time to make his turn without hitting me. He was charged. broken ribs, an ambulance ride, a new bike and ten days later rode the local MS bike a thon. I had to go slowly because the ribs hurt whenever I started breathing hard, but I finished it. I still have issues with that shoulder though. I feel it when I swim a lot.

I wish there was some cycling awareness course people like that had to take. I still flinch when someone puts on their left turn signal in front of me and try to get the driver to make eyecontact or acknowledge my presence in some way.
