One thing I do: made peace with the trainer, so I cut down my road time. When I do get on the road, I do it early in the morning when there's less traffic, I stick to low-traveled roads (I often drive to bike), and I try to ride with a group.

I just do not enjoy riding when there is traffic. I stick to routes with as little traffic as possible. What I see when I am in my car frightens me. People are just morons. I see stuff that people do to cyclers when I am driving, and I see what they do to me when I am riding. Then I come here and read all these stories.

I'm very lucky living in austin since there are so many bike routes and bike lanes. The majority of the routes that I ride have 6-10ft wide bike lanes on them keeping the cyclists pretty separate from the regular traffic. In addition to that there's so many bikers that are out riding it's very hard for a vehicle not to notice them. On a Saturday morning ride it's not uncommon for me to see 50-100 other cyclists out on the road solo, in small groups, or in large group rides.

All in all it makes me feel a bit safer, but I still think being aware of vehicles and assuming that every one of them doesn't see you is the best way to stay as safe as possible.

Count me among those who wear hi vis jerseys.  I realize that it may only make me 0.05% safer while I'm riding, but I'll take it.  I still ride like I have a target on my back.  Complacency is not an issue.

A young man (19) was killed this past weekend while riding his bicycle on a road I have biked on frequently in the past.  He was hit from behind by a truck going ~60 mph.  I don't know what he was wearing.
