20 Chesterfield, Missouri | Subject: RE: New St Louis Triathlon Originally posted by jhaack39 After that, I made a conscious effort to keep angling to the right and got pretty far from the buoys and 'met up' with them a bit towards the end as the triangle widened. This kept me pretty far away from where the sprinters were turning to join the last leg. Good strategy. I will remember that for the next time. I was right on the buoys all the way in (after zig zagging all over on the way out). It would have been smarter to be further right/east. Like you, I swam faster than I expected (3rd in my 55-59 age group, 100 overall). In my few other Tri's my swim was in the bottom 1/4 of my age group. I attribute this more to my wetsuit than my training. (Well, not getting WAY off course probably helped too.) This was my first race in a wetsuit and it probably shaved 15 seconds off my pace. Shoulda practiced getting out of it though - it probably added 2 minutes to my T1 which was one of the worst in my age group! Too bad about being in the wrong wave. That would make it harder. |

Veteran 276 | Subject: RE: New St Louis Triathlon I thought for a first-year race with a new RD (I don't think he had directed any previously, anyway) that it was very well run. From a non-race perspective, I think it was obvious that some more signage farther away for people traveling on 141 would be helpful. If registration for next year was open right now, I'd sign up. It was a great first year and I think they'll only get better from there. That transition was the best! |

It was a great first year and I think they'll only get better from there. That transition was the best! Good point on the signage. Not necessarily on the race director's shoulders....however it would benefit in the goodwill department. For a bit I was waving or giving a head nod and saying "thanks....sorry" to some of the cars that were stacked up at intersections. For the most part, I got a wave back or even a "good luck" or two. However, coming out of the casino entrance I got an "eff you" from a good old gambling STL hoosier. There were signs way south on 141 about 70 closures, but nothing about 'bike race expect delays' until almost right at the course. I did see the soccer and lacrosse clubs passed around emails about closures in and near the park and up at Sportport. You got that right on transition. I would be shocked if new races don't adopt that (assuming they're aware of it)....and as existing race producers replace the racks they would move to this. It solves a ton of issues for the racers and the race producers. Only drawback is it's not very flexible. You can't squeeze one more in. But, I'm sure that's treatable. Between the luxurious space (I was on an 'aisle') and didn't even use the 'extra' space....and being parked like 75 feet away from my transition spot....delicious. |

1 Brentwood, Missouri | Subject: RE: New St Louis Triathlon Man, I was wondering about this. Should I try the St. Louis Triathlon next May or simply play it safe with the Lake St. Louis Triathlon next September? At 60, what would my cardiologist think? He doesn't know about this yet. He laughs every time he sees me and he can't believe my transformation. It's only been a year since my heart attack and the shedding of 60 lbs of disgusting fat. lol I'm now totally buffed and sporting a six pack. I told my doc that I wanted to get back into cycling so he ordered a full stress test next month. I've been cross training hard 6 days a week with a solid year of base behind me. I've got the swimming totally covered and I'm really hammering it out on the bike lately with 25 mile rides 3 days a week. I'm stronger and faster now on the bike than I was when I was racing thirty years ago. It's my running that is the weak link. I'm a beginner and I'm currently nursing a slight torn calf muscle. The running pounding really take a toll on me. Can I do it??? We shall see. Off to the Y for a chest and triceps workout and a mile swim. |
