Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If I am alone I will absolutely pass on the right at traffic lights. I figure I am safer passing stopped cars than standing in the middle of the lane waiting for the trucker looking at the light to introduce me to his windshield. Besides I would rather get through the intersection first and have the cars pass me after the intersection than risk some nutball waiting for a gap in the car queue to turn left not see me and nail me if I am going slower then the cars. Maybe unrelated but I was the first person to a light a while ago and was almost centered on the lane at the stop bar. There were two lanes, a right-through and a left turn only. Some nice old lady straddled the left turn lane and right through lane line and inched up beside me. She turned her blinker on, rolled down her window, pointed and yelled, "I am turning right!" I assumed she wanted me to get out of the way. I smiled pointed and said, "I am going straight" and waited for the light to change. Point is you have to act like its only a matter of time before you get hit by a car riding on the urban streets. If you act like a car you are going to get hit sooner or later. I am all for obeying the traffic laws but the laws were written for rules on yielding Right of Way and safe speeds not for avoid vehicle-bicycle collisions. If you don't look out for yourself and make yourself seen (yes passing to the right to the light counts) you in shorten the time before you end up decorating the pavement. |

How many drivers expect a vehicle to pass them in the gutter of the road on the right? Answer: none. That's a good way to have a car turn into your. Besides it's agains the law. If you want to be respected as a legitimate vehicle on the road then act like one. I ride in the right hand tire track of the road, stop at lights and stop signs and generally just act like another car on the road. That a bike is just like a car with the full rights of any other car is a concept and generally not the law. I'm don't know about TX but in the states I am familiar with, riding as you say you do in the right hand tire track on a full width road is impeding traffic and is against the law. Bikes are rquired to share the lane if there's room and passing a car on the right in the same lane is not agianst the law. I've read the TX law. Merely riding in the roadway is not obstructing traffic. And passing on the right by any vehicle is illegal. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow! I'm glad I asked the question. I hypothesized that most of the most people on BT would stop and get in line with cars. I am really quite surprised by those of you who think it is safer to pass on the right and move to the front of cars at a stopped intersection to be 'more visible' then to exposure yourself to being passed, multiple times, by fast moving cars who are more likely to be increasingly irritated every time they pass you. And using bike lanes through an interection, to me, is suicidal. I don't think cars turning right look for bikes on their right before they turn and I don't think oncoming traffic turning left look for bikes at all. I'm glad I bike mostly out in the country with limited traffic. At least I know I will be past within a foot by a fast moving pickup truck and am used to it by now. The unpredictability at intersections is what is truely scary to me as a cyclist. |

In a turn lane, I typically line up with the cars. I've been with groups where people line up to the right of the rightmost turn lane and then swing wide to the curb. I almost got hit once when I came up on the right side of cars turning right, and I was seriously overheated and out-of-it. That one would have been my fault. On the other hand, there have been several times that I'm the first one at an intersection waiting for a green/pedestrian light (having hit the button), and someone comes up and make a right turn into me as the light turns green and I have already clipped in and am starting to go. I always hate that situation. Pardon me if I'm not understanding correctly, but why would you be hitting the button for the pedestrian light while on your bike? Were you on the sidewalk waiting to go through the cross walk? I say do as cars do. I will stay somewhat towards the right of the road if I'm going straight, but still stay in line. If turning left, I'll line up right in the middle so everyone sees me and knows I'm turning left. Also in college towns at least in Tempe where there is a bunch of college kids who ride their bikes to school...there are crosswalk buttons near the bike lane so you don't have to go up to the light or be on the sidewalk. And I had no idea that passing cars on the right was illegal. But ya know what I will risk the illegalness for my safety. I believe its much safer to pull up kind of into the crosswalk...the cars turning left will see me (hopefully) before the light turns green and people turning right will hopefully see me as well. Plus I know I am going to someone off if I wait far back in line( which I do if their is a lot of cars and its not safe to be on the right) because I'm not being fast enough or can't clip in for some reason...just give some idiot another excuse to bump me or hit me cause they are pissed. Also cars turning left on the opposite side will probably not even know I'm there and since I'm slower will take that gap in traffice to turn...probably into me. This was all mentioned before. It seems like everyone thinks different things are safer...but with my experience this feels safer to me. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I am solo, I act like I am a car - stopping at stoplights in line with the cars and stopping at stop signs. On group rides, the water is muddier because not everyone agrees with my theory of road etiquette. Drivers get very angry when they have to re-pass cyclists (because it's scary to do so) because cyclists "cheated" by going to the front of the intersection on the right. Better to not have angry drivers. |
