I was still in college in the 90s and was dumb enough to think that that era would never end. Boy was I wrong. If you don't strike while the iron is hot you may never have that chance again. Personally I think the situation was completely mishandled as soon as it became apparent they were going to be in the race all season. At that point they should have been stretching his rest, go to a 6 man rotation, skip a start if they have an off day. They re-inserted him after a 40 minute rain delay in August. There were better ways to handle the situation where you could have had him available for these meaningful games and they just blew it. Atlanta was only 2.5 games back of Washington on July 31st. Do you really think that they should have called up another starter from the minor leagues to go to a 6 man rotation at that point when the division is still up for grabs? And even if they did...there were 60 games left in the seaon. A 5 man rotation means you get 12 more starts. A 6 man rotation means you get 10 more starts. So all that does is buy you 2 more starts. They shut down Strasburg 3 starts short of the end of the regular season...so going to a 6 man rotation still means he doesn't pitch in the playoffs, or only in the NLDS at best. I'm not saying that the whole innings cap thing is right, or that the Nats handled it right. I'm just saying that it's easy to play armchair manager after the season is done. Hindsight is 20/20. |
