I was a member at Bally's in DC. It was OK. They didn't have a pool, but they had some good classes. Read the fine print, though: it is practically impossible to get out of your contract. You are actually committing to buying a very expensive membership in installments. I moved to a place with no Bally's within 200 miles and had to send them a lease, bills, and every document in the world to prove that it was no longer feasible for me to keep going and paying. However, if you have one nearby that is nice and you really like it, and don't think you'll want to switch anytime soon, it could be fine.

I belong to LA Fitness and pay $24 a month. It's a good gym for the price. Lots of classes that you can go to.

Let me reiterate how much I hate Bally's. I spent 45minutes on hold with them today, just to ask a simple question. I have tried calling them for over a week now, and each time, the automated system wouldn't even put me in the queue. I hate them, they are a terrible company and have awful customer service. I guess you pay for what you get, and they are not worth it, especially here in Michigan.

Strange, but I have worked out at 3 of 4. Started working out again at Snap. A friend of mine owned it and it got me back to working out. It's basic, nothing else. No pool and the one I belonged to was about 2000 sq feet. Felt like working out in a basement. also, didn't have a pool. anytime was a step up, but again, no pool. Used an LA Fitness while on vacation and liked it. Had a 3 lane pool, many treadmills, bikes and spin class. Was about $39/month if I recall. Now, compare that to the $90/month I pay for my gym. It has an 8 lane pool, full gym, 20 treadmills, more classes than you could attend and an indoor track (important in NJ). So, comparing gyms is hard when comparing to my home gym.

I'm not far from Livonia but sadly have never been to these gyms. I am a member of the Y (all locations in SE Michigan) and have been to the Lifetime in Canton (near Ikea) a few times. The Y might be a bit more than the others but I don't mind paying a bit extra for a good cause, and it's right off I-96. =) Next time you come into town after it warms up we can go for a run on Hines Drive.
