I wish more races would offer the T-shirt or the Tech shirt as an option, so you could get one if you wanted it and have the registration fee bump down a bit - even if it was only $5. In most cases, the "small" tech shirt fits more like a Large on petite women, and I never end up wearing them, even though they are really nice shirts.

This. I have a couple of nice tech shirts that are gigantic on me, so I can't even wear them to hang around in. The cotton tees I get at most races, I use as pjs. It seems like for running races, they tend to have more female-friendly sizes. All the shirts I have that actually fit, cotton or tech, are from running races (and one swim/run biathlon thing).

I saw a girl at a race recently with the same Ironman KS tech shirt I'd gotten - mine was a Small and I can't wear it since it's so huge. But HERS was so tiny and fitted and looked great. I asked her where the heck she got that small of a race shirt and she said she cut it up the seams on the sides and sewed it back up to fit her. I'mna have to try that one. It's not like I can wear the shirt anyway, so if I ruin it, oh well!

Hee...the wee ones have hijacked the thread.  And agreed - I have a huge collection of race shirts that are good as pajamas only.  I've thought about trying to alter them myself as well.  As pointed out, they're not wearable anyway.  I've actually started asking for the large and just giving them to my boyfriend, who lives in t-shirts.

I just finished a 3-race sprint series on Saturday. $105 advance registration for the series ($45 each). USAT sanctioned. ¼-mile swim, 15-mile bike and a 3-mile run. Support includes:

  • Lifeguards in kayaks and in the water for the swim  even though it's never more than 4' deep. They actually stand along the swim route.
  • Police traffic control at the bike turn-around, and with the lead biker
  • Water stop with volunteers at the 1 mile mark on the run (which is also the 2 mile mark)
  • Chip timing with swim, T1, bike, T2, run splits
  • Awards 5 deep in all age groups
  • Gatorade, fruit, cookies, etc. at the finish line
  • Announcer at transition/finish (He's no Mike Reilly, but he does a good job announcing everyone as they finish, and many as they start the run too.
  • Hammer Gel, Heed, Road ID, future race entry given away during awards
  • Full results online, usually within 24-hours
  • Race 1: regular t-shirt, Race 2: tech tank, Race 3: tech long-sleeve

There's no SAG wagon on the bike, no finishers' medal, and no carpeted finish chute. Also, it's not in support of any charity, etc. I see it as supporting me, since most of the other sprints around here are $65-$80. I think this just proves that if you're careful and efficient as a race director, costs can be held to a very reasonable level.

I just signed up for the VA Creeper marathon.  It is to be held spring 2010.  It is limited to 100 racers.  The entry fee was $10.  Now there is no shirt, and no medal, but you do get a paperweight with the race logo, and from what I hear there are aide stations every 3 miles or so.  They provide water and gatorade and simple snacks-no gu or cliff shot bloks.  The scenery is beautiful.  I hear the support is good and the race is fairly flat and a Boston Qualifier.

I have heard that runners do run long stretches alone since there aren't any bands and not a ton of spectators.  I am really excited-especially since this in only an hour from my home so I can drive there in the a.m.  It's pretty low budget for me.

to the OP...yes, I would register for a no-frills race to save money.  they have some of those around here like the dip n dash, and aquaman series.  about $20 to have the swim and run timed.  funny thing is, not too many people participate in these events.

I think there's a lot of races that should pay me to accept the god-awful T-shirts they design.

I love to race, but my wife's getting a little bugged by the fees.

I think there's low turnout because the Dip n Dashes are all on weeknights -- I don't want to drive 45 minutes or more each way to swim and run for an hour or so after work when I could spend that time training closer to home and making dinner.

I joined CO masters running assoc this year thinking I'd do their monthly free races -- haven't made it to a single one, mostly again because I don't want to drive that far to do a 5 or 10k.  I will do their Chatfield trail 10 miler -- that one's fun.  Next year I'll skip the $25 membership and just pay the $10 to do that race.

We have a winter duathlon series but it's still not all that cheap.  Got about $100 in schwag one year for winning the series so that was sweet -- not many 40+ women like to race in the winter around here
