When I swam in HS, we had 5-6 per lane. When I swam for my club, we swam about 8-10 per lane in the 25 yarder, and 10-15 in the 50 meter pool.
Of course, on a team you're generally sectioned into lanes by speed/ability, so everybody is moving close to the same pace. Swimming on my own, 2 or more to a lane would irk me

HTFU and just jump in and do it.....

  • ...it's great practice for race day conditions.....arms and legs flailing, passing and getting passed, aggressive swimmers, etc. Think of it as a positive.

4 to a lane is not that bad at all. I am on a swim team and have had some practices with over 10 people in a single lane. It is perfectly fine if you circle swim and they all go at your same pace. If they are a lot faster, you will get run over. Trust me, I know this (I am really slow). If they are a lot slower, you might have problems trying to swim around them every lap. I think they have certain lane speeds posted for each lane though. Just go to the one that most matches your speed.

P.S. you can also just go at 9:15 when there are fewer people in the lane

Well, I was partly right. I got to the Y at 6:15, got changed, and was the first one in the water...no one was waiting to lap swim.  I thought to myself, "Nice, no one else wanted to risk the swim today."  100 into my 300 WU I had my first lane-mate.  Nice enough young lady, and we agreed to split the lane.  200 in and we had our third join us, and we started to circle.  When done with the 300 WU, I rested for about 1 minute before I began my 1000 straight.  4th "swimmer" jumped in without a courtesy ask or anything.  I use "swimmer" because she was doing lazy pace breast and backstroke in the lane marked "Medium and Fast."  I'm a MOP swimmer, and I was passing her every 3rd to 4th length...arrghh.  By the time I got about 750 through my set, we had a total of 8 swimmers in the lane, with Ms. "I'll just block the lane a little more" causing chaos.  However, making lemonade out of lemons, I used her to practice my passing pace and gettting back to race pace.

Now it's time to heat up the trainer a little.

Swimming a couple laps of fly should clear out lane.  If that doesn't work, just be sure to always carry baby ruth bars...

    Surprised

Not only do you get the lane to yourself, you get the entire pool!

In our masters we have 7 or 8 swimmers per lane, sometimes more. But we have 9-foot-wide lanes so it's really not a problem. The faster swimmers are up front and the slower swimmers play catch up. Nobody is in the way.

I'm pretty lucky.  I have time to swim at lunch at a local High School pool.  On Mondays and Fridays there are no students in the pool at that time and the most crowded it has been is 3 people for 8 lanes!

Wow, I didn't realize how spoiled I am.  I have three YMCAs with pools within a 20 minute drive from my house.  I have never had more than two per lane.  If I show up and the pool is full (full = each lane already has 2 people) I just wait, but have never waited more than 5 minutes.

I can't imagine having more than 3 in a lane.  Seems like it would be very challenging to do drills.
