But...but...people like to find a topic where they get to talk about themselves and how they can identify with the question and how they had the same issues and what they did to deal with it.  Did anyone mention buying used equipment yet?

You know, you're never going to get an inflated post count next to your name with THAT kind of thinking.

I've been training for tris since March and I have done 1 this summer with another planned for Sept. I would like to do Olympic distances next year and HIM the following. However, the cost of this sport is killing me. I need a new bike, wetsuit cycling shoes, helmet, sunglasses, gym membership, pool membership I'd love to have some coaching etc, etc. I know most of this stuff is a one time or occassional purchase but I'm a full time student and I have another year left and I just can't swing it. I'm thinking about bagging triathlons for a year or so until I can afford this sport. I had to cancel 2 tris this summer because of travel expenses. AHHHHH sorry had to vent.

To True! Heck I have a job and I still have trouble affording it. Part of that is paying off some credit card stuff, and the other part is saving up money because my wife, who is a teacher, if she ends up subbing next year vs. having a contract we will need all the money we can get. It is easy to participate with the gear I have but you get tired of riding a hybrid bike watching all the nice road/tri bikes whiz by you. Hence why I am only going to do a few local races next year if I can swing it and if my wife gets a contract job (praying her interviews go well!) then I can take some of the savings I am having right now and maybe get a new bike...all big iffs at this point...

Keep training, smile, and give it time

As far as a pool.... students get huge discounts at the YMCA where I live.  Nice 25 yard pool with laps lanes.  Students are $19 a month.

There is nothing better than having a faster bike split on a POS bike than the dude riding the fancy schmancy bike... remember its mostly the engine.

If your getting married go register at an running/bike shop or an outdoor store! That's what I did and we got camping equipment, trail shoes, climbing gear (that's what we were doing at the time), we had no use for plates and toasters!

It's a lifetime sport. Get the good job so you can afford to do the sport. For now, do what you have to do to get what you need . Don't be afraid to borrow and just do what you can now. Join a club (or start one at your university/school) and reap the benefits of discounts. Be shrewd; its a good life lesson. Be confident, yet patient.
