Wouldn't this guy be DQ'd for not having his helmet on during the bike leg?  He looks like, at this point, he doesn't really care anymore.

Read the rules. Rule is that you have to have your helmet on while you're on the bike, not while you're on the bike leg.

5.9 Helmets.

(a) Type of Helmet. All participants shall wear a protective head cover, undamaged and unaltered, which meets or exceeds the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  Helmets manufactured prior to March 10, 1999 must meet or exceed the safety standards of (i) the American National Standard Institute (ANSI Z-90.4), (ii) The Snell Memorial Foundation (Protective Headgear for Bicycle Users), or (iii) ASTM F-1446 or F-1447, and which is clearly labeled by the manufacturer as satisfying such standards. Removal of helmet cover, if required for that helmet to meet such safety standards, shall constitute an impermissible alteration in violation of this Section 5.9(a). Any violation of this Section 5.9(a) shall result in disqualification.

(b) Chin Strap Violations. The helmet must be fastened before the participant first mounts the bicycle, at all times when the participant is on the bicycle, and must not be unfastened until the participant has dismounted. Any violation of this Section 5.9(b) which occurs while the participant is in the transition area shall result in a variable time penalty. Any other violation of this Section shall result in disqualification.  This Section 5.9(b) shall be enforced at all times while at the event site on race day.

F1longhorn - 2009-06-17 10:21 AM IIRC the last rules meeting I went to the USAT official said that assistance from another competitor is legal as it's basically a time penalty to the both of you.

If it's legal then why is there a time penalty?

I think he means it's sort of a self imposed time penalty for both racers to stop moving forward and fix the issue.

Ah, I see. Don't agree (that it's within the rules), and have an email into my head of officials for his interpretation.

I might be reading it wrong but I took it to mean that the official meant that taking the time to help a competitor (or be the competitor that needed helping) was a "time" penalty since you had to stop to help.......

The official rules word it: "The helmet must be fastened before the participant first mounts the bicycle, at all times when the participant is on the bicycle, and must not be unfastened until the participant has dismounted."

I'd say that getting hit by a ref on a motorcycle and flipping over the handlebars would count as a flying dismount.

corrected that for yaWink and yeah I'd agree

interesting question since we were told last weekend that racers were allowed accept help only from other racers, as long as they weren't switching bikes.  afaik xterra follows USAT rules except for the wetsuit rule.

Thanks for the info all. I do remember that poor guy crashing and walking after. I just did not remember if he was DQ'ed for it or not.

My HIM coming up does not have a not of climb but one 2 or 3 mile stretch is a good one. It had me worried that I may just trash my legs climbing that and then have to suffer thru the run because of it.
I'm training hills so I don't think it will be a problem but you never know what may happen on race day.
