Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have no issues w people smoking...just don't blow smoke in my face and don't leave that filthy butt where I can see it. This may workout for CVS but I have a feeling if they report lower revenue over a couple quarters they'll have the smokes back on the shelves. It's business and I believe CVS is publicly traded. Shareholders are a finicky bunch. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ray, I agree they'll probably take a short term hit on the top line. However, this was a huge goodwill move. I can't recall many CVS stores in Colorado, but they're everywhere in Chicago. Because of this move I'm exclusively patronizing them and skipping Walgreens. |

Who's to say they won't come out even on this one from the standpoint of picking up more shareholders that commend them doing this while losing others who don't like it or will use it as an excuse to jump ship the second their $'s don't perform well. I agree, will be interesting to see what happens to their numbers in the coming quarters.

Removing low-margin cigarettes and replacing them with some high-margin healthcare products is a business move. Someone did the math, the market study, and then performed a lateral to the marketing dept. CVS already confirmed their financial guidance for next quarter. So either: 1) this move has been planned for quite a while. 2) This is a new development, but the projected revenue/profit/margin is a wash from their current operating point-of-view. They also commented that this move will help them in marketing their "B2B" partnerships for healthcare services. Rest easy: very, very few (if any) publicly-traded companies could get away with this on a "goodwill" basis. CVS is no exception. They truly believe this to be a "net positive" for stockholders or we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Well said. The idea that they were making a sacrifice for the health benefit of the country was simply not believable. As much as we (society) have demonized smoking, still about 1/4 of the country smokes. Frankly, I think obesity and sedintary lifestyle is a greater health concern. Compare the 'health' of the guy out on the contruction crew swinging a 16 lb hammer all day and lifting heavy loads and workign concrete......doing manual labor all day. He smokes but maintains a healthy body weight. Compared him to a 350 lb office worker who sits in front of a computer all day and pays some kid down the block to mow his grass and rack his leaves becasue he can't walk from here to there without gasping for breath. Point being, life is all about the choices we make....and I'm for people making their own choices. I'm a live and let die kind of person. |

I would guess with all of the press and the positive spin they will come out fine, short term and long term. You can' buy a publicity campaign like they are getting here and in the media. In addition they only have so much footprint to place product, the area occupied by cigs won't be sitting empty. They will have other products in that space. It would also make sense that people generally bought cigarettes when they went into CVS for something else and not the driving factor for going there. I'm curious as to how many people die from cigarettes each year and how many die from prescription drugs? |

Let it go, Cruze.....you can take their cigarettes, but you'll have to pry their legal drugs from their cold, dead hands. |
