Frank - I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only person who has spent significant time NOT sleeping in my bed just because the dog couldn't make it upstairs.... my friends to this day don't let me forget about that.

Yeah, you can't spend a few years integrating a dog into the "pack" and then expect them to be OK with sleeping at the other end of the house by themselves for a couple of months. Actually, after the first month, Wifey and I took turns sleeping upstairs

fast update - she's okay. hips show mild arthritis, but nothing unusual for a dog her age and size. not the cause of the limp. probably a mild tear. some scarring, so its probably torn before (which we guessed, since this is the 3rd time she's limped like this in the last few months - only this time it was much worse than before). not a complete tear. vet seemed a little surgery happy - saying that MAYBE it was a complete tear at some point in the past that MAYBE healed badly...but it was only a guess. since greta has never limped as badly as now, i doubt that she could have had a total tear w/o acting like something was bothering her. so, good news all around. still $500, but money well spent to know she's okay. she is VERY happy to be home

ps. and she should join me in the weight loss challenge - she's now technically OBESE! poor girl. how am i supposed to get weight off of her while not even walking her????

Autumn,

Glad to hear that Greta is going to be OK. I guess since she can't exercise right now she's really going to have to watch her diet. Give her extra hugs and kisses.

My lab was a bit pudgy when I got her from the shelter. I put her on light dogfood for a couple of bags and even without running her a lot (I lived in an apartment at the time...no yard!) she lost the weight in a couple of months....It was about 5 lbs...maybe a hair more. I used the Science Diet adult light...

thanks you so much, leah. i can't tell you how nice it was to have your perspective on all of this. greta has about 30-40 to drop. she LOVES swimming and would do it constantly if we let her. once it warms up and her leg is doing better, we'll take her to the lake.

we've already enacted a strict 'if you are eating, you need to sit at the table' rule so that the girls aren't walking around leaving chunks of string cheese or bagel for greta to snatch up (and it will make my life more sane too...not as much vacuuming!). we're also going to try and put greta in our room at meal time and let her out once any flung food has been cleaned up. table scraps from the kids are a big part of the problem. i'll pm you about food and supplement ideas. again, thank you!

thanks everyone for your support. once i found out she didn't need surgery, i think it finally sunk in that she MIGHT have needed it, if that makes sense. she was my first 'baby', and i was a wreck when she was in to be neutered. i know i would have been a basket case if she'd needed surgery (however minor). she's SO happy to be home...and i'm SO happy she's home and okay. having the support here, the stories, the advice, really helped me get through the last couple days w/ a level head. thanks so much, everyone!

Hi, There is some awesome stuff out there called Fresh Factors. It's made by a company called Springtime Inc. (http://www.springtimeinc.com/live) and dogs just love them! A friend of mine gave Fresh Factors to her arthritic dog and after about a month of 8 a day she was pain free and back to her own self again, she eventually weened her down to 2 a day... When my bullmastiff Loki was a pup he injured his front "elbow" and I gave them to him while he was healing... no sign of any previous injury and he's 5 and hasn't lost a step!

I hope everything is okey dokey with your baby....

Autumn--We feel your pain...my Jack Russell, Cooper does not run with me cause he can only maintain short bursts of speed.  My Lab Cody was my running buddy and I miss her (gone to doggie heaven).  Hope all works out well.
