Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, yes, YES! To all of it! We didn't get many American shows in Indonesia but we got the Cosby Show and I grew up on it! Along with other episodes mentioned, the Stevie Wonder one was tops. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am STILL looking for one of those "Gordon Gartrell" sweaters Theo was dying for. I know I've said it before, I'll be honest, I watched a ton of tv growing up. Looking back though, the positives outweighed the negatives for me. Growing up without a dad in my house, I found the best fatherly examples on tv. Dr. Huxtable, Dr. Seaver (Growing Pains), Tony Macelli (Who's the Boss), Steven Keaton (Family Ties), the list goes on and on...fathers who did it the right way, with laughs, with love, with consistency...they weren't perfect, but nobody is...they flat out rocked as dads, and they helped mold me no doubt. Anyone else out there molded by '80's tv dads?

![]() | ![]() CD, I wouldn't say I was molded by them (as I have a Dad that I do look up to still), but they definitely painted a better picture than say Ray Romano where the dad is a big screw-up and the wife is always right... uhh that's real life, bad example... So Al Bundy. How about that one... Or how about Modern Family where the dad is a moron and the mom is a moron. That's not really a great set of role models. Curious, what do kids 10-18 watch these days at night? Is it all XFactor, Got Talent, and Idol? Edited by GomesBolt 2012-09-18 4:50 PM |

Exactly...except I'd argue the Modern Family mom's not really "moron" material, she's more neurotic and controlling...but in a lovable way. btw, I should give props to my mom as she was the primary "molder." There are a lot of moms out there doing the best they can...props to them too. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As DT mentioned, we ran into on Netflix last year and it was a show that we all could watch an enjoy! I didn't realize that the pilot had it start off on a different situation- only 4 kids, in a different house and I think Claire wasn't a lawyer...but I may be wrong on the last part. I think it was a fantastic shows in many ways: a "normal" functional family who had both parents with careers- and prestigious careers at that. Not to mention that this family was not white. And to answer a question that another poster asked...I'm not sure what all 10-18 year olds watch, but the 11 yr old in our house watches a lot of Disney crap. (I'm not saying all Disney is crap..but what she watches is). She also really enjoyed Once Upon a Time on ABC, which I also enjoyed! I was relieved that it came back this season - the topics are not too "adult" in nature. There are a few other reality shows...but even then you get cursing & blatant sexuality. Which I don't mind and sometimes enjoy...for me. |

I was in high school in the 80s, but wasn't necessarily shaped by much then. It was current, so not "classic". I realize Family Ties was big, but I never really got into it.... other than major wood for Justine Bateman. I did grow up watching One Day at a Time.... Valerie Bertinelli...need we say more? What I grew up on was Star Trek, M*A*S*H, and Carol Burnet. But as far as Cosby.... total respect for Cosby and his craft. How he could just take you on a trip with his words and put you in a place like you were there and do it totaly clean and with class. I have absolutely no problem with crude humor and grew up with Pryor and Murphy too... But Cosby gets the most respect from me. The show was a great vehicle for him and the cast was great. Eveny rudy.... I usually can't stand child actors... but she was actually good and it was a trip watching her grow up. Great show. |

The bright neon colored skirts, the shirts with the ruffles and a sweater over top. I would see it a lot in South Florida. Yeah, shoulder pads were ridiculous. What were ladies thinking with those things? |

![]() | ![]() powerman - 2012-09-20 6:01 AM What I grew up on was Star Trek, M*A*S*H, and Carol Burnet. MASH was a little earlier than the Cos. But man, what a great show. If they tried to bring it back today and inject humor into a setting like Afghanistan for example, I can't believe it would work. I deployed with several doctors one time who thought they were the cast of MASH. We had a "Capt Tuttle" in my last unit in Iraq (no, not someone named Tuttle, an imaginary person). We put his name "Capt Tuttle" on the presentations we sent to wing. They'd call for him from time to time and he was always "Outside the wire". Probably wrong, but it was funny. |

That is AWESOME. :D I doubt we could get away with it anymore. Shenanigans ala MASH are just not considered appropriate anymore, though there is a lot more humor an inappropriateness going on over yonder than people think. Just because you're a soldier doesn't mean you can't have fun and have a sense of humor. |

Well I say that because of course with only 3 channels all you could do was watch reruns... and Star Trek, MASH, and Carol Bernette show re ran plenty. I really did love Carol Bernette... I honestly think they were the funnies ensemble ever put together. Carrol, Vicky, Harvey, and Tim... they were so funny together. ... anyway... MASH, what a run that was. To this day, I cry when Radar announces Henry Blake died. That was such a punch in the gut. What a great show. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If anyone is up for a road trip, I saw on a bill board that Mr. Bill Cosby will be performing here in Las Vegas next month. On his radio ads he states that "I will be funny". Also, Ray Romano, Andrew Dice Clay, The Spinners, and of course all the other regular shows. Any of the Cirque shows are great, but be aware Zumanity, (the sensual side of Cirque), is T & A all the way. Well it is Sin City after all. Edited by SWIM2LIVE 2012-09-21 11:21 PM |
