Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I estimated that 50% race effort would bring me home in 13hrs or so. With a finish time of 13:16 that included 5-10 minutes of stopping to help a fellow racer and staying with her until a cop with a radio showed up....i would say I hit the mark pretty well considering the heat and the gastro issues I had on the bike.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Since it was my first IM my overall goal was to finish before 17. I was thinking I could probably do it in under 15. I trained hard and really wanted this, but knew knew I would just be happy to finish. I had a great race. Could have pushed the swim more (1:08), backed off on the bike (6:08), and saved more for the run (4:56). I felt great during the swim and the bike (best ride ever), but was in pain on the run. I pushed through it. I saw so many people that were having a much tougher time. Walked through every aid station, but ran/jogged in between. Finished in 12:24:35! All the hard work paid off. It was the most amazing feeling!!! So, considering my goal was really under 15, I did much better than expected! :-) My first IM experience was wonderful! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Im happy with my time of 13:45. Being my first ironman, my goal was just to finish but there were alot of things that happend to me on the bike course, but thankfully I was able to deal with them. first, my left aerobar came loose around mile 15, thankfully I had my handy dandy multi tool in my bentobox. so I stopped, tightend the bolt and I was up and running again. when I installed the aerobars on this bike I used carbon assembly paste but I dident put any new blue locktight on the bolts and murphies law prevailed. guess whats on my to do list this week......... second, I recieved my first draft penalty. it happend just after going through Lagrange and I was comming up on a group of riders and there was oncoming car traffic and the riders infront of me were ridding 2 abrest so I anounced my presence with a simple "passing on your left" and then the wonderfull white honda goldwing motercycle rode up beside me and said "314 your drafting" then she said something and I heard penalty tent. needless to say, I was mad. but I dident want to argue and risk getting thrown out of the race. Im not going to qualify for Kona, I just want to finnish. so, I backed off and slowly waited for the ridders to complete thier pass, and I rode on. When I did Steelhead last year the race briefing went over all the penaltys and how to serve them. the lady on the motercycle at Louisville dident show me a card, and quite frankly I dident know if I was givin a warning or a penalty. So, on the second loop, I pulled into the penaly box for the first time since I plaid hockey in high school. I gave them my race number, and name, and explained to them what happend. and then they told me something very interesting. they told me they opperate on the honor system and they dident know if I had a penalty or not. Regardless, I wasnt about ride into oncoming traffic to pass a group of riders. So, I served my penalty and dident complain about it. I still had a long way to go, no sense in letting myself get upset over it. third, I have put close to 1500 miles on my new tri bike this year with no flats. so once again murphys law took effect. somewhere around mile 80 I got a rear flat. I had everything I needed. changed the tube, inflated it, and rode on. so, considering all that happend. I was just glad to cross the finnish line. did anyone else think that there was alot of car traffic on 42 comming back into louisville? |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() Perfect Day for my 1st IM. I was expecting about 13-14hrs but had delusions of somewhere in the 12's (aim high) I finished 13:54:06 I was at the back of the swim back and had to fight my way through the slower swimmers, but once I made the turn I was on cruiese control and only had to go around a few people. 1:20 Swim My bike sucked. 7:07. I really thought I was doing well on the bike. Only stopped for 8 minutes at the special needs station. Nailed my nutrition & hydration (IM Cocktail sip every 20 minutes, Elec/Salt tabs every hr, water water water and sips of Gatorade Endur. when I felt like it) I took almost 20 minutes in T2. I needed it. Ran the whole marathon and just walked the aid stations and mile 20-21. Didn't need to walk that mile but I wanted to finish strong. Ran the last 5.2 miles and just slowed down to grab a sponge and sip of water here and there. I wish I would have slowed down at the finish and taken more in. Oh well, it was awesome anyway. Congrats to all the finishers!!! All the hard work paid off. Now I'm going to drink Ales and watch college football!!!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 11:23:48 was muuuuuch much much better than I imagined. I put alot of time into estimating and planning out my finish times in all the races I do and I blew this one away by more than 30 minutes! I had been struggling on the long rides with saddle and knee pain, which frequently required me to stop after any more than 2 hours at a time. This did not manifest itself at all during the day (except maybe the last 5-10 miles down river road, but by then the end was near). This is where I made up just about all of my time. The swim and run were pretty close to what I thought I could do, same with transitions. This now has me thinking with some improved fitness on the run, I could entertain the idea of a sub 11 time for next year. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a best case/dream world scenario with a finish time of around 12:30. However, all of my more reality based possibilities were around 14-15 hours. I had a finish time of 14:09:30. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with that knowing my capabilities and fitness level. I was slightly disappointed with my bike and run times. However, the 'disappointment' apparently hasn't been too bad, because I haven't been able to get the smile off of my face for the past couple days! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like I'm posting a B-script plot here -- same script, different actors. Those deep private expectations? Nope, didn't beat them. Never did super-specific calculations before the race, but can say that I had a better than expected swim and bike. But like some many others here, my stomach shut down about mile five on the run, and then it was nothing but walk. But I've been fortunate enough to be surrounded by mentors and friends reinforcing the "It doesn't matter when you finish. You're still an Ironman." mantra. I never hit any really dark places. Was I annoyed? Sure! But I never let in doubts that I wouldn't keep walking until I crossed that line. The darkest thoughts were along the lines of "&$&@, where the *&#$ is the next mile marker?!? This is taking forever!" (If nothing else, I took the time to look around more and soak in more of the experience. For instance, it wasn't until I was walking that I happened to look around and notice that I was walking right past Camden Downs.) After the fact, I can even say I was glad I finally got ill in the last two miles, as it cleared my stomach enough that I could run the very last blocks including the finish. And running across that line was fantastic. 14:10:57 -- I am an Ironman. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Personally, I wanted between 12:45 (the old "your HIM x 2 + 1hr" ) and 13:30. To anyone who asked, I just said between 13-14 hrs. I was happy with my 13:13:33 finish under the hot challenging conditions Sunday. This being my first IM, I just wanted to cross the finish line with a smile. That mission accomplished. However, I also feel my game plan was slightly too conservative, as I had left some out on the course (okay not a ton, but definitely gas left in the tank at the finish). Next IM will be for time. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I started out with a sub-13 hour goal and, if I had actually been able to throw down a run like I had done in training, I would have had it. Instead, the day just started to slip away from me. First went my 13 hour finish, then my 13:30 PR, then my 14 hour finish. Thankfully, Ckinsey hooked up with me and paced me in to a 15 hour finish, losing just 2 hours off my goal time.

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() you should just read Davidb's post, that is what happend to me. I had a steady swim and bike, didn't push anything, and my run started okay, but I got a big pregnant looking belly, and started to walk the walk. I was shooting for sub 12:00, and did a 14:23. But you know what, I finished my first Ironman, and I am not dissapointed, I just need to get to know my body better. |

![]() I came in with the goal just to finish in under 17hours. Well that was accomplished with a 16:21:33. But deep down I was aiming for somewhere in the 15s. I was blown away by my swim with a 1:40. I'm a horrible swimmer and normally freak out, but I kept it cool and i was happy with this result. I think the company before the race really helped with this. The bike absolutely killed me. During the second loop my hams started cramping and I was forced to get off my bike for awhile. I hit a major dark place here and then I found God again. Ended up with a 8:15:44. The run was not a death march for me. Well the first 2 miles were. I just tried to soak everything in and stay positive. I took it easy and ran(jogged), when my legs felt fine and power walked when my legs cramped up. My coach informed me to eat my way back to life, which ended up happening. I finished in 6:01:42. My goal to get an IV after the race was accomplised to. I ended up getting 2. Oh and I made the participant dvd to. Thats me in the blue tri top getting sunscreened up before getting on my bike. I wish i didn't look constipated in it though. Oh well! |
