Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I enjoy a quick shot of encouragement to or from. I also get tunnel vision in races so I miss some stuff too! On a side note I missed placing 3rd in my category at Riverwood this year, why you say...chit chatting 4x on the bike instead of pushing. But, I had a great day, no regrets |

If I can properly execute the "pull my finger" trick in the alloted 15 second timeframe is it fair game? Ok Michael, I about busted a rib laughing at this one! Actually its people like you that make this sport fun. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I never have any issues with folks wanting to chat out on the course. Especially when you are in a long race and are playing leapfrog with the same 3-4 folks for a couple hours, we tend to have a running conversation. That is the comraderie I enjoy when it comes to this sport. My first tri when I went from 12th out of the water in the first wave to just about DFL on the bike leg, even though I was getting destroyed, I really noticed how many people had something encouraging to say. That positive vibe from many of my fellow triathletes (including a surprisingly large group of people left to cheer the last few stragglers in) is what made the pain from that race fade and got me hooked on this sport. Ever since that day, I have tried to return the favor, where its encouraging one of my friends or fellow BTers, to screaming my lungs out for a Chrissy Wellington or Natasha Badman on the course, to helping someone who is suffering just as bad as me on a bad day (See the first lap at IMAZ). Not only is it not rude, I think it is he right thing to do. Triathlon may be an individual sport but every single person out there can relate to what you are going thru and can help encourage their fellow triathletes. Remember this is fun! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The longer the race, the more chatty I am because I'm not as winded. I love giving and getting short encouragements -- we're all suffering together after all! And the FOPers and BOPers give encouragement back equally in my experience. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For me, races are fun. I am focused, but I always make time to encourage others, and especially THANK THE VOLUNTEERS. On the bike at every intersection I always give a quick thank to those who give their time so we can race. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A few words of encouragement is cool, but PLEASE do not pull alongside another rider on bike leg to chat. As bear said, it's against the rules and VERY rude to other riders trying to pass. I'm in 1st year of tri, but avid cyclist. I'm BOP swimmer but MOP-FOP bike speed so I'm passing dozens of cyclists even in a sprint. If I had a dime for every time I've been obstructed by side-by-side riders it would pay for my entry fee ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello No you were not wrong but keep it short. I am a newbe and BOP guy but I enjoyed the encouragement others gave me to include the family that adopted me on the run. Then there was Pamala on the bike ride who I passed 3 times and she passed me 4 times. We exchanged names near the end of the ride and laughed with each other each time we passed. I never saw her during the run or at the finish line but it made my first race even more meaningful. Kevin |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do this in every race. It makes me feel happy to see so many folks out racing. I always enjoy a race better if there are friendly faces so I try to make friends with everyone. And, I keep track of who passed me (or I passed) on the bike so I have something to say for the run. I also like to yell encouragement to the other racers to (1) distract from my own discomfort, and (2) hopefully give them a little boost. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Right on, good to see I'm not totally alone in just being happy to be there and wanting to share the love. And again folks, I was not striking up convos on the bike leg...I was passing a ton of people so I thought I would give a shout out to their efforts as I went by. (And on one incredible climb I looked over at a girl i was passing and we said "Holy Sh@#" at the same time. ![]() Edited by ifoundit921 2009-08-26 12:21 PM |

And that is exactly why you should talk! You are going thru the same challanges and it's fun to share your misery or observations with others. On my last race we went out 10 miles mostly into the wind. After we made the turn and were heading back, as I passed someone, I commented "Wow, sure feels better with the wind at our backs doesn't it?!" She smiled and seem happy that someone actually spoked to her and said "I know!! It was about to kill me going out!!" I pulled on ahead. A few minutes later she pulled up beside me and ask "What mile are we at?" I said I had 12.45 miles and she thanked me. I noticed she had a cable for a computer but the computer was missing. I asked "What happened to your computer?" and she said "I bought this bike on Ebay and it the computer has never worked. I guess I need to get one." And then we parted ways. Later on I passed her at about 17 miles and as I blew by her I called out "17.25" and she smiled, laughed and said "Thanks!!" Had I not made the earlier comment to her about the wind, she probably would not have asked about the mileage. ~Mike |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I like to interject humor into everyday life, so I use that for quick convo's during the race. I'm way too new and MOP to give encouragement, I feel like it would be condescending, however I don't mind getting it. Noob question, what does "Unless they use a bucket" mean? |

It's a running joke on the board. Some folks will use a bucket to sit on in transitions to change shoes. The hard core competitors tend to scoff at the use of buckets as transition areas are usually crowded and they are not really needed (according to some). ~Mike |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank God I found BT before my first tri, and didn't ever consider a bucket.... Now everytime I do a race and see one, I can't help but to laugh at some of the threads I've read on here. I have chatted with people on the run. On the bike, I have exchanged supportive words or gotten encouragement while passed or being passed. Little hard to talk during the swim.....never tried that :-) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for getting me up to speed! Haven't witnessed a bucket yet, but I will be on the lookout for them from now on! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've never talked or been talked to on the swim portion. On the bike I have certainly chatted small things back and forth as the carbon disc guys catch me after the swim. On the run don't be miffed if I don't respond - at that point I am pretty much trying to 1) stay upright and 2) breathe. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's funny. I'm really a very quiet guy. I don't talk much to people I don't know, but on the run leg of a Tri I talk to everyone. Mostly just quick "keep it up" or "good job", but lots of times I hit someone with the same pace and chat it up. I don't know why this is? I never talk on the swim, and very little on the bike. |

I never talk during the swim either but at my last race I really wanted to talk to someone. I bit my lip but what I wanted to say was "Hey, moron, watch where you're going! If you are going to swim backstroke (during a sprint), you need to look around often and see where you are going and who you are swimming into!" But I just smiled at him and got away from him as quickly as I could. ~Mike |
