Where do I find one of these computers? And, what's a x2 cadence?

Hahahaha . . . maybe I'm dense. Well, the other day I tried to do 7 minute miles and cut two minutes off . . . yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. It was stupid. If it makes you feel better . . . I have REALLY long legs. Maybe that makes me go faster? I'm also fairly young . . . .? I don't know. I'm trying to come up with some excuses.

Nice to see so many people joining. I have already beat my goal weight on the first day. I understand this is all water weight. I read an article saying the first 1 or two weeks of training can make you lose about 10 pounds in water. After the next weigh in or two my modest goals should be more of a reality. For now, I will just accept that the "big weight loss" i am about to see is just water weight and look forward to the 1-2 pound loss/week that will eventually be fat.

You can get a cyclocomputer from your Local Bike Shop or online at various bike related stores.  I've been meaning to pick one up myself so that I can stop trying to calculate my speed in my head while riding.  "x2 cadence" was just carla saying that she agrees with/seconds the statement that figuring out your ideal cadence will help with your speed.

I also thought of a title for the challenge (since I started it . What about "No meltdowns, just meltoffs." Or something like that.

Cadence is the rate you spin the pedals. You will do better with a high cadence in a easy gear than pedal mashing a hard gear. It's also easier to keep the HR down.

OK, I tried to come up with a catchy name, but I am so not crafty like that.  I like the no meltdowns, just meltoffs one.  We could be some kind of "losers."

When I was working with a Personal Trainer for the past ten weeks, I had only lost 5 pounds, but lost 6 inches and my BMI dropped from 23 to 17. Now I wont to focus more on building a base.

I'm in on this challenge. Goal is 165lbs. Currently about 173

I give blood in a month for my annual Diabetes checkup, so I'm going to push hard.

 Weekly goals...

1)Diet

2) Three days with weights AND two evenings of beginner Yoga.

3) Several 45/60min sessions of Swim/Bike/Run.

Hello, I also would like to join this group.  I am a complete "FNG" to this Tri thing and am totally out of shape. I just finished getting my masters degree and spent a good part of the last 2 1/2 years eating, studing, and making sure no-one stole my couch!

A little background:  I am a 41 year old male and as of today my weight is 229# (ht 5'9'') - with my all time high being 244.  I played football in high school (just a couple of years ago!) and have pretty much been gaining weight ever since.  I chew a can of snuff a day and have recently stopped drinking beer.  The most exercise I have done in the last 20 years is driving a golf cart fast enough to catch the beer cart.

I did start a walking program on Monday of this week and have walked for 25 minutes 4 x this week.  My goal is to participate in two to three sprint distance races in 2009 - working toward an Oly distance and finally a HIM a couple of years from now.

I did swim comp from 5th grade to 9th grade (A and AA times in freestyle) but again this was a LOOOONG time ago and about 100 pounds in my past.

I hope this group is still open and I look forward to learning as much as I can as I start this journey.

Thanks - Fatdogg

Hi everyone,

Add one more person to your challenge. I am 6'2" and weighed in at 228.6. I am down from 249 since January but have been stuck at this weight for awhile. I am doing well with the exercising but not the eating. This challenge may be what I need to get going again.

My goal for 2 weeks in 226

Good luck to everyone!!

Jared and Bryan - Welcome!!!  Lots of us are very new and we have a few seasoned folks on here, so this is a great plae to get started...even thought, technically, you've already taken the first step.  Get signed up for that first tri, set your goals accordingly, and all else will fall into place.  Look forward to keeping up with your progress.  Don't forget to post log your workouts.  It is great to look back and see the progress.  Have a great weekend!!!

Welcome you two!!!! I'm glad that you're here. When I started this thread, I was afraid that no one would come . . . but I should've known that I build it, people will come (lame, I know).

Anyway . . . so I was down to 194.8 yesterday . . . I didn't get to weigh myself today. Whatever. I did change my eating habits, though. I have to be very careful with my blood sugar and diet or else I won't be able to have children one day (endometriosis) . . . yeah, long story. ANYWAY, I was trying to do the stricter of my two diet options and was completely blowing it because it's so hard (no meat, dairy, white flour, oil, or sugar), so I switched to the GI Diet instead (as a way of life . . . not a diet . . .I've lost 20 pounds and kept it off with that one before and it's EASY to stick to). Anyway, I am planning on my weight loss upping. We'll see!!!!

Welcome to the challenge all you new folks!

I had a bad eating night last niight. went to a party and had a hamburger AND a hotdog. I gained about a pound but I am sure a lot of that was just water from having to much salt. Anyways I had a really good workout today. I guess we all have a bad DAY. its bad weeks and months we need to avoid.

Does anyone have a Idea for a NAME for this challenge?

-Brad

Hey guys, I am Todd.  I started about 2 weeks ago with my nutrition plan and made the decision to start training for my first Tri.  I started training last week, taking it easy at first so I don't mess up my knees; therefore, I only trained 3 days last week.  I think I am going to step that up to 5 this week.

I would love to get in on this challenge if I may.  I have tried to get in on a couple more but they have een running for a while and I think the peeps are already getting tired of it because they don't post regularly.  Anyway, my start weight is 254.  My goal for Wednesday will be 252 since I only have 5 days till weigh in.  My long term goal is to be at 190 or below before May 1st.

 Good luck to you all!

Todd

The name sounds good to me.  Went for a hike this am with my girls (9 & 7) and spouse (won't give her age as she is thinking about joining and might read this!).  Hiked for approx 1:45 minutes without stopping which is something for me.  I'm not sure when I will start the whole jogging thing but would like to be down to 200 prior to putting that kind of strees on my knees / feet / ankles.

I just checked out Fitday.com and it seems like it is pretty good.

God job on the hike, Fatdogg! That hike was awesome. As far as a calorie calculator, if you're looking for one to count up the calories that you eat, I use the nutrition log on this site . . . as far as knowing how many calories you should eat . . . I have also heard that fitday is pretty good.

I just used fitday too. It seems good but I felt like it estimated my need a bit high. Only a few weeks of training and adjusting will tell I guess.
